GR86 Service intervals

I don't believe so, I think Toyota would need to honour any warranty claims within its standard 3 year term as long as the car has been serviced as per the service schedule using OEM parts and by a VAT registered garage.

This brings into question the financial aspect of keeping the extended warranty intact. Would the cheapest option be doing the first 3 services at an independent as per above, and then only doing the main services at Toyota to keep the warranty going, with everything else done at an indepedent/specialist?

With the recent ridiculous service cost increases I feel inclined to give Toyota as little money as possible in the future, whilst ensuring the engine won't blow up out of warranty due to a manfucturer's defect.

Oh I see they changed it because of the 10 year extension. Fair play to them.

This is effectively the way I view it. I'm going to invalidate the warranty anyway (at that point) so what's the point in paying all that extra money to a main dealer.

Also, I service all my cars/bikes myself but if I have to give it to someone else (for warranty purposes) I'd trust my local independent over a main dealer every time.

And with an access panel and a top screw filter it takes no time at all to do. You can do it at a fraction of the cost but keep all receipts. If you sell it should be to an enthusiast anyway so they'll understand.
 
Why is the US service manual advising 6 months - 6000miles (or something) while our GR's should be okay with 12 months? Double the service interval seems like a lot.. I'm contemplating about doing a 6-month oil change myself and leave the 12 month services to Toyota (to extend the warranty).

Possibly different climatic conditions with a wider range of temperatures across N America ( deserts to the artic) compared to Europe 🤔 🤷‍♂️

Americans seem to think cars need an oil change every 50 yards or they explode. I reckon the 10k miles/ 1 year interval will be fine. That's what it was on my GT86, and it had no issues in my ownership. The engine in the GR86 is almost identical so I'm sure it will be fine. I may drop the oil after the break in though.

Glad to hear it. I'll do an oil/filter change around 1500km as well. If I can find an OEM filter, or would any brand be fine? I don't want Toyota to see I've been doing maintenance myself...

No, it is a waste of money and materials. Modern oils and engines are more than capable to cope with 12 monthly intervals. The only time I would consider doing it more often is if the car sees track work regularly.

Potentially different American driving style too. I remember reading somewhere that Yamaha bikes had engine issues (that didn't occur in Japan) when they first started selling them in the US due to the engine having to sit at the same rpm for miles and miles
 
I think if it's not a requirement for maintaining warranty I'll also be doing the same, then go to Toyota for usual service intervals.

Anyone know the service intervals on the GR86. I just scanned the manual and I couldn’t see it mentioned? Also wondering if it might be different in the UK to the USA, Australia, etc. as countries where it’s already been released will have this information, but I know it can be different from...

I broadly agree to this theory. The only two exceptions to this are:
1. If someone does a lot of short stop start driving/ city driving and no regular 50+ mile drives, then there is a lot of fuel dumped in oil and severe service instruction of 6 mths / 5K Miles needs to really be adhered to.
2. The engine is generally clean burn. If you see black oil in the first 5 K miles , checked through dip stick, then its worth changing the oil with a Engine flush added in. This only happens after 50K miles of driving in point 1 and oil changed every 10K miles.
