GR Yaris Hit and run :(

seriously go tell the police he mis-gendered you and that your "feelings" are hurt and its causing you "distress".....seems to work in most police forces these days!!!
Yes, you feel part of your car and identify as a car door. He has hurt you in so many ways....

This planet is disgusting...

What an embarrassment the police are in this country now.

When one hears that the police force are understaffed, you can appreciate them being reluctant to go after lost causes but when presented with evidence such as video footage of the crime, information on the unscrupulous measures the culprit is going to to avoid being found and then assisting by providing further information of his potential whereabouts, the lack of action is a utter disgrace.

It's no wonder insurance costs have gone through the roof, given that there is likely no chance an insurer would recoup anything, with this state of affairs.

Shocking.

Jeez just reading that chat log boils my piss. What have you got to do to get them to actually take action? Stalk the vehicle until the owner shows up then stab him? If I was a copper I would be all over that, a case all neatly wrapped up with a bow on a plate, I can't imagine how low morale must be if not a single copper can be arsed to go and actually do his job. In saying that the courts don't help their cause either. I remember seeing one of those police documentaries following a crime unit trying to catch car crime related gangs, they stalked one particular gang and found a lock up with stolen cars inside all in the process of having their identities changed, the caught the owner red handed took him to court and he was found guilty, his punishment? A £400 fine, I fell off my chair. So loads of police man hours, a conviction and a few days worth of criminal profits as a fine, yeah I can see what is the point of catching crims.

Unfortunately the people operating the chat and call centres are not officers. They’re driven by the system which in turn gives police a bad name. I suspect there’s plenty of officers who would love a quick case like this but until it gets to them they’re none the wiser.

Gutted for you, utter scumbag behaviour and topped off by an incompetent and ineffective dibble!

I had one of my cars hit around 25 years ago in a public carpark, driver left the scene only for me to discover what had happened on my return. If it hadn’t been for two independent good Samaritans who witnessed it happen leaving their details and the registration of the car I’d have been SOL. I went to the local cop shop armed with the information and whilst it took several months to get resolved to their credit they did get it sorted. The details were passed to my insurer who in turn claimed against his, the car was repaired at no cost to me and the cocksocket responsible was slapped with points and a fine for leaving the scene of an accident.

The call centre staff will be civvies following a script.
Regardless, the police aren't interested in crimes against property unless it's on a huge scale.
A point made recently by the Home Secretary needing to suggest that they should actually turn out for burglaries instead of just issuing a crime number.
Good luck with your claim - it's a pity you have to do all the legwork yourself.

Good luck with that, if you called the mid stabbing they'd probably ask you how many times you'd been stabbed

Sorry, you've only been stabbed eight times, we can only come out if it's more than twelve.

A fair point re call centres. As much of a faff as it is I wonder if it’s worth physically going to the local station rather than calling or emailing. Hopefully slightly more chance of making traction with the compliant having a face to face than remotely although no doubt as others have said these days too much time is tied up with knocking on doors over problematic social media exchanges inbetween sitting in McDonald’s/greggs/subway/KFC car parks.

Just jumping in, but shouldn't insurance be able to figure this out?
Yes. Normally you just give the plate to the insurer and allow them to deal with it.

However I suspect with this case there will be a bit of an issue if the owner is claiming the vehicle as sold.

It’s a frustrating one for sure but I don’t consider it a failing to stop crime as it’s on the OP’s land and so likely more about damage to property which will sit well down on the police’s list I suspect.

isnt it still "against the law" to have an accident & leave the scene without leaving your details...

not to mention knowingly drive a vehicle without insurance and keeping it on the highway...

wonder what the police would do "if" it ran someone over and killed them.....

just dont get how they can ignore it :eek::rolleyes:

Hi all,

Another update!

Got a call while I was at work and it was the police. It looks like they actually went out to take a look since someone else put a report in, but saw on their logs that I got in contact yesterday.

They went to go take a look if the trailer was still there and it was. They then said that as its not over 21 days untaxed they can't take the vehicle.

They also acknowledged that while it was involved in a crime, as nobody was injured they're treating it as a minor collision. If anyone WAS injured and they drove away that's when they would have taken it immediately.

As well as this, as the car is untaxed and uninsured BUT registered to a trade account they can't take the vehicle (that one goes over my head tbh).

They did apologise for not being able to do anything and he did claim that he tried to get the car taken but didn't have the grounds to do so as he was only a part of the neighborhood police team. He said he is going to be updating my case log with the location of the vehicle and his findings and inform the traffic investigation unit so they are informed.

So seems that if enough people call in about it they actually do go take a look. Not much I can do now other than sit and wait for the insurance and traffic investigation unit to do what they need to do. I haven't heard from my insurer for about a week so i'm assuming the third party hasn't responded yet.

The question now is.... Do I claim off my own policy (they confirmed it will be a non-fault claim so no claims is protected) and just get the ball rolling on getting the car sorted? OR sit and wait for someone to pull their finger out? Just worried about my premiums if I do claim off my policy..... Thoughts?

Good news that something appears to be happening.
I think I'd hang fire a bit - I would've thought your insurance company would be able to determine if the other vehicle was covered by an active policy at the time of the incident, given that you have such good evidence, and what happened subsequently with the sale/cover story would be irrelevant really.

As answered below and partly by me above. Failing to stop is the crime but as it’s on private land and no one was in the car at the time it doesn’t apply.

While I get the frustration, Some of the comments here regarding the police are abit childish.

I'm glad you seem to be getting somewhere OP, I'd look into credit hire company ,my partners car was hit by someone while parked and she had witnesses and CCTV, albeit the other driver was insured ect. And she was referred by her insurer to claim through a credit hire company as it wasn't her fault and she paid no excess

I have virtually zero faith in the Police. I have had only a few interactions with them and they are nearly always awful.

I was once pulled over by an officer who accused me of driving past him and swearing. Once I was pulled over he spent the next five minutes winding me up and trying to get me to take a swing at him. Didn't bite, didn't charge me with anything. Complaint about officer was swept under carpet, he's moving to another force. Standard officer protectionism.

My Dad was assaulted at a concert, all seater thing. Police told him they couldn't find the guy who did it, no way to find out who he was. My Dad asked if they'd checked with the venue who booked the seats behind them, and they said no. It was apparently too much work to contact the venue and find out who made the booking and then asking that person who they gave the ticket to. After some convincing this was a viable way to actually find out who did it, they actually did it and surprise surprise, the person was found.

Then you see threads like this where the police are provided a location for a vehicle involved in a hit and run and they don't seem interested in doing much about it

Then a teenage autistic girl calls an officer a lesbian and what was it five officers show up to try the arrest her for a hate crime.

My experience is if there is any kind of investigative barrier, as in basic police work, you'll have a difficult job getting most officers to do it. Anyway I don't want to derail the thread too much, just wanted to explain why my facetious comments about the police are the way they are.

In my experience, credit hire companies just massively increase the costs which is how they make money. We all pay for it through premiums. I had a case go to court (more costs) to fight about the over inflated hire car costs.

I would get the ball rolling.

Your premium is likely to be going up through no fault of your own. A pals son was reversed into at a supermarket at the end of last year. No damage to the car so accepted their apology and forgot about it.

Two weeks later his insuarnce called to say we hear you were involved in an accident. Other driver reported it over a week later and took liability as they were worried the son would make a claim. The boys insurance has gone up 3x from last years partly due to being involved in an accident apparently.

Glad you had CCTV and are getting somewhere with the police. Dont know how people can just drive off and think they can get away with it nowadays.
