GR Yaris Hit and run :(

While I get the frustration, Some of the comments here regarding the police are abit childish.

I'm glad you seem to be getting somewhere OP, I'd look into credit hire company ,my partners car was hit by someone while parked and she had witnesses and CCTV, albeit the other driver was insured ect. And she was referred by her insurer to claim through a credit hire company as it wasn't her fault and she paid no excess
Be careful with a credit hire company - if the case isn’t won, and/or the third party insurer rejects the hire costs (which are often massively over inflated) then there’s usually a clause in the contract the claimant is personally liable for the costs! 😳

I still have to declare a 'fault' claim (from 2019) on my previous car, as someone drove into it and drove off without leaving details. £3000 worth of damage. Protected no-claims, so premiums for all our cars haven't gone up that much, but the same as your case the Police couldn't be bothered to do any Police work . . .

Hi all,

I know it’s been a while but some slight updates.

insurance have finally managed to track down the correct third party. The initial third party (Wakam) act as like a broker to other sub companies and told my insurance to re-direct my claim to a company called Broadspire. Insurance then kindly sat on this information for a week and only chased this company when I called them up. This third party have confirmed that the driver was insured at the time of this incident and have asked for the evidence so they can review.

In the meantime I’ve retrieved a repair quote for the car. I’m attaching cropped images to exclude personal info, but just wanna put this out there so if anyone else has similar damage in the future they know what the ballpark figure is.

Not a cheap fix it seems. They said everything needed to be replaced as it would be cheaper for them to do. Especially with the aluminium door. Bumper is being replaced as upon inspection under the wheel arch there was a crack on the side of the bumper. A lot of painting involved as the red is a triple coat apparently, but they said that it isn’t a problem to do as they’ve worked on GR’s before.

In the meantime the police have not contacted me at all, I’ve asked for updates and only get told “it’s under investigation”. The trailer has now left the location it was dumped at so I’m assuming I’ll never see it again. Extra frustrating when it’s been sitting there for weeks and they ‘couldn’t do anything’.

Just need to wait to see if the third party disputes or admits liability. Despite the evidence with how everything is being handled I have a suspicion they will deny it but we shall see.

Will keep you all updated if it does actually go anywhere.

Ouch! I’d be prepared for the other party to say they lent it to a friend or some rubbish like that.

When is a car considered a write off? 1/3 its value must be getting close?

Ok, now I can understand why insurance premiums are so high. I imagine half of what's on that parts list is reusable.

That won’t matter - as RTA insurers they are liable. Yes, repair costs are pretty eye-widening these days, but that’s surprised me and I see several of these a week in my job as a broker. I wouldn’t have thought they would write it off, but you never know.

£10, 860.32?!

Surely someone is being greedy here.

Don't forget it includes wheel, tire and front bumper

The scary part is without VAT the parts and paint is 7.2k. Actual labour of painting all that and fitting doesn't honestly look too bad. If that's £75 an hour overall, 21 hours work?

No idea if the parts list itself is too egregious.

Though if I was Usman I'd be asking if I could recover the bumper and stick in shed or whatever. It doesn't look beyond saving, unless it's one of those things where it looks fine externally but a bunch of clips or whatever are done in, and you never know when that front grille is going to take a pounding.

Or you can bet the bumper will be on eBay soon after the repair.
As others have said, that price is ludicrous. As is the cost of a headlight on the GR86.

I bet that cost will creep up slightly too when they strip it down and find other things that weren't visible from the initial inspection. Eye watering numbers.....although I had a repair cost that crept into 6 figures for a 911 a while back!

That sucks, although I can believe it. I'm waiting for a quote to fix some, what I thought was minor, damage to my passenger door and they warned me it's going to be around £2000 to replace the door.

Been a while, good news is that after about a month the car is now back and looking great :)

Can’t fault the body shop that did it, they treated me well and kept me in the loop at every stage. Took the opportunity to put a fresh set of tires on as they were replacing the front passenger tyre anyway.

I had to fork out the excess to get the job done which was £700, but I just didn’t want it sitting on the drive damaged any longer. And I’ll be honest £700 excess was better to pay than the almost £11k quote so used that as my coping mechanism 🤣

Bad news, police are still refusing to give me an update and just keep giving me the usually line of “it’s being looked at by the traffic’s investigation team” any effort to chase that team I’m just told they don’t speak to members of the public - so I take that as them telling me they don’t wanna know.

Insurance wise, it’s turned into a nightmare as the previous owner is providing different details each week for the individual he sold it to (apparently). They’ve said whenever they recoup the cost then I’ll receive my excess back, however I’m very sceptical this will ever happen. Speaking to some people in the trade over the few weeks and this is known to be a strategy to get away with it. Only thing I can do is just phone my insurance up for updates/just sit and wait to see what happens.

My attempts with the DVLA to get the vehicle owner information via V888 form have been rejected as I do not have enough evidence and due cause for the information :/

Just happy the cars back and healthy now, gunna treat it to a nice detail in the summer and try to forget this happened. If anything DOES happen via insurance I’ll let you guys know, but I think it’s highly unlikely.

Appreciate all the support and assistance I’ve received over this so thank you. Think we all learned why quotes have skyrocketed recently 🤣

Sorry not enough information for the DVLA??? You’ve got it on CCTV? Guessing they have said that doesn’t count?

What a clear video wasn't enough evidence for them?!

Glad you've got her back though.

Sucks that he might get away with it, but very happy that your GR is back in one shining piece!

Wow, what a story. Glad it’s over now and almost all is well. To cheer you up, this is for you:

Here in Texas, somebody would have stared into a shotgun barrel… 😉 Unbelievable how lame the cops were.
