GR86 GR86 - What wheels and tyres are you thinking about?

I'll avoid writing a long comment here, as I already have in my members car thread, and the other one about winter tyres, but briefly; the Crossclimate 3 sport is a very good tyre. I would highly recommend for the British winter. 225/40/18 works well on the stock wheels.

Does the forum still consider Goodyear eagle f1 asymmetric 6 to be one of the top choices?

Tempted to try some Uniroyal Rainsport 5's have them on my VW T6 and they have been great - low noise. Cant say I drive the T6 like the GR86 though...

I'll be trying out the Goodyears once my Conti SC7s bite the dust (which apparently will be quite soon for the rears, sorry officer!).

Cheap in Costco and apparently have a softer sidewall so less road noise as well.

The F1 Asy6 is still a good tyre. Great value for money too if you can find an offer. But the new crown holder is the Pirelli PZ5.

Similar price to the F1 at normal prices but the F1 always tends to have offers.

I'm will be fitting PZ5 when spring comes.

They're very good, yes. one of the most progressive and feelsome tyres I've driven on.

I found them to be lacking traction in very cold wet / wintery conditions, which is par for the course with a uhp tyre on the road that is outside of its temparature window - they were still perfectly useable. I just couldnt use much boost :) . I fitted CC3s on the stock wheels for this reason, which i guess are filling a similar role to what the Rainsport's would for you.

Although the CC3s are very good, and find grip / traction in all conditions, they don't come close to the feel of the goodyears. in dry conditions you can feel the extra movement in the tread blocks.

Maybe consider where you would like the extra feel and performance. the ASY6 are very good for most of the year, and good in winter, so long as it doesnt snow. a rainsport (I have never owned one but I'm familiar with the concept) would probably be better in the winter, but not as good the rest of the year.

If you like to lean on the car, I'd go with a summer tyre and just take it easy in the depths of winter.

Interesting thanks, this is what I was hoping for.

Not too grippy and progressive are what I want, I barely drive the car all winter so not an issue.
 
I just got back from a very nice drive around the southern lake district, just edging into the north yorkshire area on the last leg.

Im still on the CC3S so thought i would share some warmer weather feedback. They still perform very well. These tyres generate serious traction. I actually think they hook up in first gear better then my summer tyres in all conditions. (Drag racing tyre?) but i'll have to test this when i put them back on. Probably much to do with a soft compound with enough tread to deform and really dig in
They do feel very tall (sounds strange but i cant think of another word) and i think this a combination of them being 225 and having a lot of treat depth.
They do corner very nicely but there is a slight mushyness in response compared to a UHP tyre and the car feels a bit less agile and responsive than i remember on warm dry roads. That said, i do like to press on and my car has 350hp so it's quite an extreme example of the use case on this car.
I think i might have found the CC3S's thermal limit towards the end om my drive. Pressures had risen to 2.5 bar by this point. In winter i had them at about 2.2/2.3 warmed up. I had been on the brakes a lot on some roads with steep inclines which will have also warmed them up. As i went through one of my favourite sections of road which is a twisty 3rd gear left, right left right, left right with nice open sightlines, they felt a little greasy as though they were past their best.

All in all I'm still very impressed with them. They are REALLY good in the british winter. Miles better than i expected. Unfortunately i didnt get to test them in snow, but tyre reviews say that this tyre is the best all season tyre in the snow and I hold their tyre data in verybhigh regard. They aren't an all year tyre if you like to really lean on your car when the weather warms up though. Certainly not on a longer drive, but I dont think any tyre has that much ability.

It's about tike to swap back to my goodyears now that i assume the last frost has been and gone.

Interesting, have similar thoughts about running AS’s on my MX5, as the ambient temp increases I find they roll off when pushing on. For the Scottish climate and how good AS have become I will choose them over a full winter tyre as we have such variable temps in Spring.
