GR86 GR86 - Brake Upgrade Guide

It's very subtle you won't notice on the car. I believe the rears aren't genuine Brembo so are painted retrospectively @Godspeed will confirm. Genuine 2 pot rears are more expensive than the fronts.

Yeah I believe you’re correct and like you say, probably wouldn’t notice on the car…I’m being too fussy!

Cosworth Street Master – OEM Caliper - A good fast road pad, but lacked the thermal capability when on track, will work for short stints. Ideal for year round road usage.

Thinking of picking up a set of these. Do you recall what they're like for brake dust?

I seem to recall rumours that cosworth street masters are just rebranded ebc yellow stuff! (which are excellent road pads btw)

Think they're rebranded as CS-Pro Streetmeister now too. I had a set on the rear of my GT86 didn't know they were EBC!

Thanks for the replies. I've got some yellowstuff on the way. I used to use EBC pads on my 350Z and they're we're good. Although they were blue stuff for relentlessly pounding around Oulton park.

Haha, they just turned up as I was typing this.

I was going to order one of These flex hone brushes to clean up ay pad deposits off my disc as there's a little bit of rumbling. £56 seems a lot though! can anyone recommend another tool?
Yeah, I have a free solution:
- Take the car out for a drive and include some gentle, repeated braking to get the pads and discs warmed up.
- Find a quiet stretch of road where you can get the car up to speed.
- With the brakes warmed up, do some repeated hard stops; from like 60-70MPH, brake as hard as you can without triggering ABS, but DO NOT bring the car to a complete stop...make sure you are still rolling after each deceleration.
- Repeat that a few times, and then drive around normally to let the brakes cool off, and avoid coming to a complete stop while they do. Maybe a gentle cruise up and down a dual carriageway for a while.

I do this every time I fit new brake pads or discs to speed up the bedding in process. And I've done it on a few cars to fix so called "warped discs" - the vast majority of the time, it's just pad deposits, and the procedure enough is enough to burn them off.

Disclaimer: if you die doing the above on a public road, I take no blame, but can I have all your stuff, thx.

What about some general Paint Removal discs? They come in different stiffness/grit and you can get them for either an electric drill or an angle grinder. Screwfix has them for about £8.

Anyone that’s fitted the Godspeed kit themselves receive instructions/torque specs?

I just had an E-mail asking if I can grant someone permission to edit the BBK spreadsheet. seems a little odd as it isn't my sheet. If one of you is locked out of it or something, let me know if there's a way I can help.

Yep they're sent with the receipt, couple of A4 pages with instructions and torque settings
Got it on the email cheers 👍

Quick q though…

“Fit the caliper over the disc with the bleed nipples at the top , and fit it to the alloy brackets with the M10mm x 90mm socket cap bolt , and spacer sleeve , now note the clearance either side of the caliper to disc , this clearance will be different for each car as we have found that there is a variation in the hub castings on the inside of the lugs , all the hubs have identical measurements on the outside of the lugs , but not the inside”

Didn’t realise this was the case, do I need shims to ensure correct installation/distance either side of the disc?

Cheers

Yes, they supply shims (washers ) in the bag I believe, I spent some time making sure that it was as Central as possible, which did mean assembling it all, measuring, then disassembling and adding a spacer to one side etc to get it right.

Ok thanks mate 👍

Edit. hmm, Ben at Godspeed said that was with reference to the Subarus and shouldn't be much of an issue on the GR86...soon find out, no shims in the fitting kit anyway so will see how it goes next week!

Not the same kit (Reyland AP) but I needed 0.5mm shims on both sides of the car to ensure the disc sat central in the calipers. I posted about it on this thread back in July. Clearance either side afterwards was even and around 1mm with 28mm thick discs. Hopefully you won't have the same issue.

I've just taken the plunge on the Godspeed Brembo setup for the fronts. Years ago I ran the AP 4 Pot 330mm setup on my GT86 and that was transformative. I did two trackdays last November on stock discs and pads and well, you can guess how that went. I know better pads would have made a difference, but I couldn't see any sense in messing around, so figured I'd put this kit on rather than wasting money on changing pads. I'm going to leave the rear stock as I really like trail braking so not wanting or the rears to do more potentially.

I'd have loved to have gone for the AP kit again, but this was such a good price and Ross reassured me. :)
