GR86 GR86 - Brake Upgrade Guide

Thanks 👍🏻

In Essex’s promo vids they claim there’s no downside to running these callipers on the road since the pistons are stainless but I suspect if you used them for a few UK winters the pistons and seals would still be toast eventually. The nickel finish you can get does look v nice though 😍

I think for hard road use / light track use the CP9200 is the right choice on the GR86. On heavier cars I can see the benefit, the Pro 5000 Rs seem popular on M cars in particular.

As an aside it’s interesting that that company are just running lowering springs and bars with sticky tyres.

There is a trackday rental company called Hype Motorsport (https://www.facebook.com/hypemotorsportuk), who are running an AP Pro 5000 R caliper on their GR86.

Looking at the photos on their facebook page (below) and comparing them to the AP Racing catalogue (AP website) & Race and Rally (https://raceandrally.com/cp9440-pro-5000-r-4-piston-radi-caltm-caliper), the caliper definitely appears to be the CP9440. The car is also fitted with 17" wheels which would limit options of 6 pot calipers.

Piston sizes should be fine.

It took me about 6 or 7 years to kill my dust boots.

I'd only look at the Pro 5000 R range if the car is a dedicated track car and doesn't get used in the wet or salted roads.
Race duty brakes, but stock shocks with, presumably, stiffer HR springs? Interesting.

I don't want to steer this thread off-topic but Can't help looking into their setup as I'd like a similar wheel / tyre size.

tyres look like 235/40/17 if my eyes are good enough to read that. sizing for those wheels in 17 inch would suggest they're on a 9J ET38. 235 on this wheel size looks like its giving decent support. eibach lowering springs on stock dampers? must be pretty close with regard to interference but i guess the offset helps. rears look pretty flush but not excessive poke. wonder if there are any rubbing issues.

Ah bugger, someone posted a couple of weeks ago about the OEM wheels and I said I'd try and check the fitment, but I totally forgot.
Hey, did you ever get round to testing this? Currently looking at getting the Reyland kit for mine and trying to confirm if it fits behind the OEM wheels?

I'm pondering giving EBC RP-1 pads a go in the Reyland AP kit. They have a friction coefficient of 0.45. I plan to upgrade the rears too so should I go for something with as similar a coefficient as I can? Obvious options would be Yellow Stuff (0.48) or Blue Stuff NDX (0.52). There's also the RP-X (0.55) option but I suspect RP-1 is a better fit on a lighter car and offers better modulation.

Those of you looking for a cheap option for BBK, then a company called FreakyParts have just developed a Brembo conversion kit, using the Megane 3RS calipers (not the STi brembos), which have a 40mm x2 piston size, 326x30mm MTEC grooved discs and Brembo pads, for around £900. They also offer a fitting kit, so if you've already got a set of the Brembo calipers you can just order this.

Full kit includes:

Calipers
326x30mm MTEC grooved discs
Brembo pads
Adaptors
Bolts
Longer custom braided brake hoses

All brand new parts as well.

Fitting kit comes with:
326x30mm MTEC grooved discs
Adaptors
Bolts
Longer custom braided brake hoses.

This is basically the same setup that Misha ran on his GR86.

My only recommendation would be to buy different discs, as the ones that the kit comes with are very basic/cheap options. And chose another pad option other than the Brembo, they offer Ferrodo PBS ProRace, Ferrodo DS2500, Pagid RS29, which are all much better choices.

P.S. Not sure if your still looking for a set @biggie

Ideally yes you want a similar coefficient front to rear, I'd say bluestuff as I know they stand up to track abuse fairly well. Although my main concern with Bluestuff would be cold use (road) / inital warm up (track) as they have a higher friction level than RP1 at lower temperatures.

Having the rear bite before the front is not ideal, as I've had that in the past with Ferrodo DS2500's (Front) and Cosworth StreetMasters/CS-Pro (Rear) and its very easy to upset the car under heavy braking. However the only way to know for sure would be to try them.

Here is a track simulation performed by EBC, that compares their track/race pads, you can see that blue stuff has higher friction than RP1 in the inital warmup phase.

As for RP1 vs RPX, I've used RP1 and they are an excellent pad with good modulation, decent bite at all temperatures and stand up to alot of abuse, and they are extremely cheap (£105.73). They do wear unevenly though, so require pad rotatation. I'm yet to try the RPX, however if I compare the RP1 to PFC 08, the PFC 08 have a better bite than the RP1, so I'd suspect the RPX to be similar to the PFC 08, maybe even more aggressive. I think the RP1's are perfect to use with a road tyre (PS5, ContiSport 7, etc) and the RPX would be better suited for a track tyre (AR1, CRS, AD09, A052, Bridgestone Potenza Race, etc).

Presumably hub size is the same between GT86 and GR86 so these would be fit? I note their website states spacers will be required for OEM wheels?

Do you know what other disc options they offer?

I wonder if they could do anything for the rears? 🤔

The hubs are the same (only BRZ Gen 2 hubs are different)

Wheel fitment compatibility will be based on the first gen cars.

Do you know what other disc options they offer?

They do lots of disc choice, but they are all MTEC discs, which are a very basic and low cost option.
If it was me I'd speak to Reyland and see if they do or could manufacturer a two piece set, alternatively I'd look at:

Centric Parts / Stoptech: https://www.centricparts.com/disc-brake-rotor-125-47019
DBA: https://www.dbabrakes.co.uk/discbrakes?number=16665&name=DBA4654-10

Quite possibly.
For rears look at these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/275844827518

Started fitting the Reyland kit today but I’ve ended up having to source some 0.5mm shims to make the disc sit truly central.

It probably would have been fine but one of the pads was very snug as a result and if anything is worth being a perfectionist about it’s brakes.

Thanks that’s really useful. Interesting about the uneven wear, I take it you mean tapering lengthways?

The car is on Goodyear Supersports and will do occasional track days so I figured the less aggressive pad would be the sweet spot.

Thanks for this Will.

I've been in touch with them this morning to ask a couple of questions I had, and some that I knew others would want to ask:
  • You can purchase the kit without discs by using the code "NO-DISCS" as a discount code at checkout, saving approx £80
  • They don't offer disc upgrades, so if you want a different disc, this is your best bet
  • They don't offer the calipers in any colour other than red, however, the warranty is unaffected should you get the caliper colour changed
  • They only offer Debit/Credit card payments, no Paypal or similar as this would require them to uplift the price by around 10% to cover costs
I'm just getting some information on the cost of pad upgrades etc. and how to go about getting that ordering process smoothed out.

Might be a good solution for a number of people.

Edit - In order to change pad options, they've now added a number of pad upgrade options to the GT86 section of their website. You simply add these pads to your basket alongside your order and they will adjust your order to include these pads and not the stock Brembo pads.

Yes, exactly that, mine had a reasonable taper but I did do about 6 trackdays on them, before I removed them (put Endless MX72 back in for Winter). So if you rotate them after two or three trackdays, you should be fine.

I have a set of these calipers and had 3D printed a set of brackets to test fitment.
I've ordered these without the discs, if these were available 6 week ago it would hate saved me some time, but I got to brush up my CAD skills 😄

I wonder if they’d paint these (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/275844827518) to match the fronts. Then it’d just be a case of finding discs and pads to suit the rear?

Would be less than £2k all in I’d expect.

I will very shortly have a set of these for sale with all OEM hardware (and a 330mm Reyland AP kit). You need 316mm disks, I have a list of compatible disks which I'll post when I have my laptop. They are a common caliper so lots of pad choice.

I just got delivery of the k-system kit few days back
I guess I'll give it a try and sell it if I'm not happy with it.

Happy to see this option on the market, excellent value!!
