GR Yaris (Gen 2) GR Yaris Mk2 (MY2024->)

GR Yaris mk 2, as far as I know, is confirmed, from very good sources.

In fact, it has been tested somewhere in Europe already. It is a 2024 model and allocations will be ‘tricky’ during that year:

-Improved engine. 280 ish hp in Europe. What’s in it? Not sure, my take is gr corolla adapted to meet EU emissions.
-Automatic gearbox as an option (maybe just in convenience packs?).
-Lower seats.
-Lower interior screen.
-Higher rearview mirror.
-Digital dashboard.
-Minor external changes.
-Possibly new rims.
-some GRMN parts available through dealers.
-More expensive than the actual one.
-New colour(s)?

If you have ordered a 2023 GR Yaris, I would cancel the order if I were you and try get the mk2. If you have one already, it’s man maths time, but in my opinion based on the things I shared, I’m not convinced the upgrade is worth it. But I’m sure Toyota keeps stuff for themselves until they unveil the vehicle.
is 300hp from US 280hp in UK?
no, just kidding. nice if there's small power up, just so that new buyers have something to be proud of.. not as if it needed a homologation status for WRC.
if it had all the major issues fixed that Mk1 has, it could be a good reason to update, but to be seen.
I'm already having so many jodhpurs' in wardrope so mk1 feels just nice. Like less valves and smaller turbos would be better?

heard also rumour of tests but haven't seen any pictures.

That’s specific listening to customers / monitoring of feedback if it addresses these items. It reads like a list from the forum thread on what do you hate about your Yaris:

-Lower seats.
-Lower interior screen.
-Higher rearview mirror.

Yes but I was thinking more of
- engine compartment heat management
- transmission & clutch Max Torque
- valve train springs
- power steering failures
- brake design issue (too slim discs make brakes run too hot)

I've already fixed the seat, mirror issues. but those technical limitations in driveline are more difficult.

I'm not a "Mk 2 denier" and would definitely be interested, but I'm yet to see any actual evidence, or credible information that supports all of these claims.

"Lower seats, interior screen and higher rearview mirror" are very specific and just sound like the wishlist from the traditional moans of owners. If it does come, I think the rest of the list is an obvious given.

But of course, it's confirmed, from very good sources. Very good ones. Say no more!

I don't have much doubt there is something, but that still doesn't mean it will:
- Be actually sold (a project isn't the same a decision to sell, projects get scrapped or pulled all the time)
- Be sold outside of Japan (many versions remain JDM only)
- Come to Europe (with a different set of regulations that is costly to make variants for and have them homologated)
- If it does come to europe, not a given all countries will take it in if they don't expect to sell many (different times now compared to 3-4 years ago, decision to not sell small numbers happens all the time).

At least for Sweden no high hopes it comes, we have just a bit more then 200 cars registered here now and if anything, it might very well fall on the last step as they won't like the hassle for a handfull of cars where even the marketing benefit is doubtfull (not much motorsport profiling of Toyota here at all).

I thought there would be more in Sweden.. we have 147 on the road over here.

Yeah, that's my thought too. As I say, I'll believe it when I see it. Not to say it won't exist, or will never exist, but as far as I'm concerned so far the GR Yaris Evo already exists and it's the GRMN Yaris.

The engine never needed to be homologated for WRC (nevermind for Rally1)-- I suspect Toyota gave us an ≈260 hp motor because a) Toyoda is an enthusiast and b) because not many people are going to buy an ≈130 hp 2 door Yaris.

-Lower interior screen.

I can't imagine the bizarre seating adjustments people are making that this is necessary with the stock seats, or even a little bit lower seating. I am reasonably short at 178 cm and the only thing the screen stops me from seeing is more of my dashboard. :🤷:

Honestly, putting it lower just means needing to move my eyes further from the road to see the map or adjust media playback.

Agree - although that never stopped Porsche making half a dozen variants of what is essentially a GT3 with different specs. "New model"!

I don't understand that either. I'm 186cm and have no problem. Ok, the passenger wouldn't work for me, it's really too high for me, it's even higher. But as a driver in a rally car, almost perfect.

However the engine was homologated for what now is Rally2 and FIA even changed the rules to allow 3-cylinder engines. And the soon to debut 2024 Rally2 GR Yaris uses both the engine and the body of the production car, and this is perhaps one reason to keep the GRY alive with an mk2???

Completely agree. The appeal of lower seating is lost on me. At 185 cm, I find the stock seating perfect – not too high, not too low. The car already has a tall feel, and sitting any higher or lower would detract from its rally-like vibe, which I think is best experienced from a slightly elevated position compared to today's sporty standards.

See I read that as him talking about the Rally1 car when he's talking about the facelift.

'We are getting a new body design and the customer motorsport is cool, we decided to change our livery'

I get the impression the Rally1 is body shell change with most of the rest being quite similar to the older car?

I suppose the most charitable way to read that is he's talking about the customer car, but for me this isn't anything better than circumstantial.

lol wonder if that is on purpose, still not sure (it comes to each country)

@Onehp not quite sure what you mean?

I'm just saying from the rally team perspective the new shell is effectively a facelift rather than a total redesign?

Got that, or he is referencing a (road car) GR Yaris facelift as it literally reads, so just wondering if the duality is on purpose. Just ask (don't have insta)??

From the front view it looks like a bumper car you would find at a fair ground, I also find it funny that rally cars have that huge gap in the wheel arch for good reasons obviously, but the first thing we consumers do is lower the car and close the gap which may be difficult if they released this one to the public
