GR Yaris (Gen 2) GR Yaris Mk2 (MY2024->)

Any hydrogen thing, if one were to appear, will be nothing more than a very limited numbers marketing curio.

I'm thinking they'll chuck out another few special editions, probably Japan only, à la the Rovanperä/Ogier ones, and maybe a GRMN update, a 'Final Edition' or something. They just don't seem to have the manuafacturing capacity to do much more than that.

The autobox they teased might make an appearance though I guess, but not in the volumes of the original car.

The GR hydrogen car has a huge tank in the back behind the drivers, not really practical for a road car. It’s a nice bit of marketing but hydrogen is not going to be the answer, synthetic fuels are more likely for “petrolheads” to still get their fix, although they’ll only be for those who can afford it.

Given the payback lifecycle for cars is usually around 5-6 years you’re not likely to see any new petrol vehicles go on sale now from anybody but a few niche super cars. Add in the way the 2030 target isn't a sudden switch but a phased introduction, (ie 20% of sales must be fully BEV in 2024, rising to 100% by 2030) there’s no way any OEM will be able to recoup the costs of a ICE car unless it’s already on sale.

However the world is bigger then europe, but still, market for the GRY outside europe wasn't huge, only Australia and JDM had volume there. So good point mostly valid probably.

Yes outside of Europe I think it’s fair to say they will keep selling ICE vehicles. America for example, is never giving it up! Hence companies like Ford still releasing things like the new Mustang GTD or Bronco R which look amazing. But in the UK/Europe we’ll be zooming around in BEVs with mandatory speed limiters and road charging.

Just had it from a source that I really trust on the inside that GR Yaris petrol is dead. Last existing orders are to be built and then production will end. Then the GR Yaris will return as a hydrogen car in 2025. This is also the situation with GR86.

Don't shoot the messenger, and feel free to take with a pinch of salt.

My oldest son is a lead tech/inspector at a large dealer here in Japan, and this is what they were told about end of production, too. Combination of many things, but a big part of it is that they're just low-volume cars. His dealership sold 40 hybrid Vellfire in one day a month back, Land Cruiser is on a 4 year back order, and on and on, so Toyota's not wasting chips on low-production, specialty cars.

Add to that the petrol-only angle, CAFE standards, and it just doesn't make sense for them to continue.

Whatever. I got mine.

The star that shines twice as bright burns half as long, and all that.

Europe creates approximately 10% of Toyota Corp revenue so maybe it is not the most important market. In comparison US and Asia provide 50%, so easy to understand if not everything is not brought here.

we have heard its coming.. maybe end of this year.
more power (280-300hp?) and bit more aggressive looks, they said.
Would be interesting to hear what remains different to mk1. Same driveline and transmission I assume? Maybe the same Turbo & revised head as with GR Corolla & GRMN Yaris?
So maybe more power is available.

It will be fun to see how it sells, with current economy and interest rates it will be thougher for dealers to shift.
Maybe less cars will be available, so they will still keep high demand.. ?

I was sceptical but this latest nugget does really seem to suggest there will be an updated version.

May well stick my name down for one when it is announced.

This could also be read as "when the newly revised part becomes available" which could also make sense given the context here.
I wouldn't put it past Toyota to release a Facelifted Version with a tad more power though, however I will only believe when I see it.

Agreed, but the statement is hugely tautological unless it's referring to a new car model. "I started eating the cake when I began to chew the cake" kinda thing.

It's also a technical bulletin, and from my experience they pass by many eyes before being released into the wild. There is a good chance that language is deliberate.

Or it could just be badly translated from Japanese :D

So there are more tangible details trickling out...
  • More power? Nice
  • Better brakes? They're already immense for rad use so not sure there was much clamour to improve this aspect, but hey ho.
  • Stiffer shell? Always good, I guess.
  • "Improved" suspension? Who doesn't like improvements?
  • Digital dash? On the evidence of the media screen and existing dash display I'm not holding my breath for much here.
  • Automatic/ Not for me, but I guess some will appreciate it
The name though. Reported as 'Evolution II' but in reality it would be the first evolution, surely? I'm calling Chinese whispers and/or translation issues on this one

I hope that the parts are all intercompatible so that we can get some of those upgrades for our Gen 1 GR Yaris :)
I'm not moving on to a second generation car, especially if the prices have gone up.
I've already got quite a bit of money in mine (especially in seats and TÜV-certificate costs) so it wouldn't really be worth it in my eyes.

Opened a poll to see what the appetite is for existing and potential owners.

Here’s hoping it only comes with the slush box and then I won’t be giving it a second thought!

I bet the revised fascia will be horrible too. They always are.

Just sell me the revised parts for power uplift and give them warranty backing. Actually make them free for original owners. 😂

I dunno, the one in my A6 is lovely. Knowing Toyota though, theirs will probably look like an Android tablet from 2010.

It’s the Corolla dash.
