GR Yaris (Gen 2) GR Yaris Mk2 (MY2024->)

God damn, sorry for hearing this. Any idea what gear it was in when it happened?
I can’t remember but I’d probably have said 4th or 5th and in normal or eco mode although that’s really just playing with the throttle sensitivity.

Well that's very disappointing. Considering the damage to the TC and starter motor it sounds like another exploding piston.
What makes even worse is that it's a Gen 2 meaning this issue has not been addressed by Toyota.
I just find it Inexcusable that a company like Toyota with all their motorsport experience can't make fuking pistons.
Sorry for your pain.

So the only change to the pistons is a coating apparently.

I thought I would be the first Gen2 but according to Pirras there might have been a few more before me.

I’m happy to talk about it as it’s a good awareness for all at my expense. I suspect if more had talked about failures on the Gen1 maybe Toyota would have paid a bit more attention?

BMW spent more than a decade pretending rod bearing roulette was normal. S54, S65, pick your flavor, E46 M3 and E9x M3 both got dragged into it. And those cars cost about double what a GR Yaris costs today once you adjust for inflation, so I’m not shocked at all when something expensive has a weak spot.

Nothing is built to last anymore. It is all cost cutting, margin chasing, and calling it “engineering progress.” Toyota played the same game with the “upgraded this and that” hype on the gen 2, and now it is looking like a brochure upgrade, not a real world one. Marketing fluff with a warranty bill attached.

We should have zero leniency for Toyota, be ruthless.

I remember reading they were using "new lightweight pistons" in the mk2.
If it is indeed the same piston, just with a different coating, there'd be grounds for legal action. I can't believe they'd lie openly like that!

Thought it worth an update.

My engine blew up.

Cruising along a dual carriageway approaching a motorway junction, car in front doing 60mph me matching their speed and when he pulled over I started accelerating 3-4,000rpm and it wouldn’t go past that. Ease off just try again and same and realise what’s going on.

However I’m over a flyover nowhere safe to stop so I kept the engine running and bang lots of white smoke a load of metal down the road and I found somewhere in not the safest spot and get recovered.

Engine has a hole in it identical to failures you’ll find over the internet including the Piras video, that a year ago I felt was BS. It’s also damaged the starter motor and transfer box.

The car got dropped off at the tuners and a new engine is going in along with a closed deck and forging to try and stop anything like that happening again, speaking to a friend at the weekend and their friends Gen1 is also at the same tuners getting a new engine for the same issue.
I'm so sorry to hear that... it's hard to understand using the translator. Did a piston basically break and puncture your engine? Is the transmission affected by the problem? Do you think the warranty is invalid? Can't you "hide" the remap from him?

Once you’ve tuned the car, you have to accept that the warranty is gone. You can’t hide a remap — especially with modern cars where absolutely everything is logged. You’d need to be lucky enough to deal with a blind mechanic.

Personal advice: don’t remap your cars — especially one like this that’s already pushed to the limit.

From what I know, this car can go above and beyond in terms of power without any problems… however, some have broken the engine even with original cars, some have even had their warranty denied because they exceeded 86mph 🫣, if this is true, besides being worried, Toyota will go out of business quickly in the near future… rumors are spreading fast

What you can do is “unlock” its original potential meaning setting it to 304 HP, which is the power output it gets in Japan. But going beyond that... it’s 100 HP per cylinder. I don’t think you can push it much further without compromising reliability.*

Keep in mind, I chose this GR precisely for Toyota’s legendary reliability 😂 but it seems like nothing is what it used to be these days.

Still, I stand by it: remapping a car is risky, especially nowadays when just about anyone with a laptop in a parking lot can offer you a so-called “custom remap”…
I also saw the GR Corolla burning engine. I just hope my engine don't blow Up without any reason 😂

Hardly pushed to the limit. Lamspeed use the stock crank and many other OEM parts on their 1000 bhp monster. Just the luck of the draw and the chance you take when remapping a car. Always choose a reputable tuner to limit the chances of a failure and hope for the best.

I’m genuinely curious how many well documented cases there actually are of bone stock GR Yaris engines letting go out of the tens of thousands out there, across both Gen 1 and Gen 2.

And out of those, how many were properly maintained, what oil they ran, and how often it was changed. That context is always missing, and without it we’re all just guessing. Probably something we’ll never fully know.

I'm mostly interested in the oil, because I read that many MK1s were filled with questionable oil... like SN or whatever was available... but the question is: why shouldn't the warranty cover you if you go over 86mph?

Yes an Airtec oil cooler and intercooler. On the day air temps were around 5 degrees oil running around 82-89deg from memory.
Did you fit a baffled oil sump? What oil were you running and how often did you replace it?

Just this week I went to my Toyota dealership, which is also one of the few certified GR dealers, to schedule maintenance. And they agreed to use Ravenol 0W-20 oil the only one I want to use. So, good news!
