GR Yaris (Gen 2) GR Yaris Mk2 (MY2024->)

I did also ask some questions about the UK spec as it didn’t seem that clear to me from the previous information shared.

Not sure if it’s been covered already.

I didn’t see anywhere mentioned in the specs that we would get the Forged alloys as standard thought it was strange but they confirmed they are.

We don’t get an option for red seat belts. Just standard.

This one I think was obvious from the previous model but definitely no heated seats or steering wheel.

Intercooler spray feature is confirmed.

JBL sound system isn’t an option for UK.

I find it odd that some countries get to spec certain things but others don’t. I know it’s decided by the respected head offices but just find it strange when they’re all built in the same factory.
Everything was listed on the Toyota press site. If it’s not mentioned it’s not fitted.

Wow, this Mk2 car is a weapon... Just a few tenth from the Ioniq 5N (who has 30% more power/weight ratio) and 2 seconds faster that the Nissan GT-R.
Unbelievable....
And the manual one is quite faster then the auto one... Isn't it, dear @Norbi ? ;)

The rain was getting stronger and stronger. I wouldn't look to close into these laptimes for serious comparison. But as far as manual/auto goes, we already know there is practically no difference. However it's a really fun video to watch.

Just back from the dealer & an enjoyable test drive of the manual MK2. Honestly, it felt like the very first 2021 test drive.

Unexpected that you can "feel" the 19 additional PS under the gas pedal. It indeed feels a bit stiffer on the road. The handling remains exceptional, break performance as well. Happy to confirm the complete absence of auto start/stop. One thing I didn't compare at all are the driving modes, i.e. normal / sport / eco, which supposedly adjust power steering and throttle response. Left it at sport + track.

ISA was a major drawback for me. Here (sorry for German..) you can see the different options and how to enable/disable. Not that tedious in my opinion, even if we have to do that every time engine is switched on. I have to say that beep is much less bothering me than I thought.

The main selling point of MK2 for me has been seating position, interior and view from the right side of the windshield. As far as this is concerned, you really feel one with the car now. Lowest seat position is amazing and one can, finally, see everything without ..crouching. I know the interior design has been a debatable topic, but I simply love it, especially the way everything is tilted towards the driver. In a nutshell, for someone crazy about WRC, in case what you want is this awesome feeling that you are literally seating in a cockpit of a weapon, I finally felt that way. Was it worth switching? Absolutely yes, in my personal opinion - I was more than glad to confirm this.

Interesting view of the boost gauge. Regularly hitting 1.6 and 1.8 was the highest I seen.

Seems to hold the boost slightly longer too compared to MK1.

Also the auto was boosting within normal limits, nowhere near the manual. I reckon the manual was slightly tuned.

Saw this car yesterday in front of my supermarket. Unfortunately I didn’t look him up right then&there, but did today:

„Starting in 2021, he (Latvala) served as the team principal of Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT, replacing Tommi Mäkinen.[1]“(!)

Damn, I’m still so ignorant about WRC and GR‘s history…

Should have asked him about the eternal manual vs AT debate😉

I’ll keep looking, maybe I’ll see him again…

I popped to a local car show where SaveFerris was displaying the mk2 GR Yaris for Snows Waterlooville and my first opportunity to see one in the flesh and sit in it.

Externally the rear lights look good and I prefer it over the previous version, the aerial is now matt, the front and rear grill are metal, spoiler looks better painted and shouldn’t pick up swirls like the current black item.

Intercooler sprayer works around every 10 seconds from the water tank in the boot. Still not 100% sold on the front bumper but I like it’s all designed with a purpose.

Under the bonnet the only change looks to be the snorkel from the GRMN and the top mounts. (Obviously things have changed internally and probably externally but this is a quick first impression).

Inside the dash looks great in person although I was a fan previously. The big difference for me as a taller driver is the lower AV screen and the mirror higher although not a huge difference up its a lot more lower visibility (May change on your size). Now has built in nav although CarPlay or android auto will always be better.

The cup holder has now been designed to hold a phone and an iPhone max with MagSafe wallet is not going anywhere when placed in the slot.

Customer drive mode is editable in the menu and you’re able to change powertrain sport, normal, eco. Steering sport or eco and air con normal or eco. I suspect on the auto there will also be a gear setting. The display is clear and very easy to setup your preferred display and there was 3-4 customisable displays so you can scroll through them if you want.

Overall the visual changes within the cockpit are good and I’m looking forward to a test drive. Cheers to SaveFerris for taking the time to talk to me and allow me to play with the settings.

I can't believe the roof still comes with that fake carbon wrap. It's like they addressed every complaint except this one - and this one's a big deal. A lot of people have voiced their dissatisfaction with the wrap for various reasons.

Not really heard of it as a complaint. Some have changed it to a polished work surface and some have cocked it up using the wrong products because they’ve not read the manual but with 25k sold “a lot” on a forum/social media is probably “a few”.

That's really odd because it's been discussed everywhere, almost as much as complaints about seat height. It's probably the easiest fix for Toyota—just leave it exposed and apply a lacquer instead of covering it with a wrap. It's widely acknowledged that frequent exposure to the hot sun will damage the wrap.

Mines 4 years old kept outside in southern England so not Thai weather but still looks like new.

Normal clear coat will not protect carbon fiber for UV-damage, it will wear . We'll just wait for a few more years until all the ones that "just added some lacquer" will have a faded roof and start complaining about it.

What do they use on exotic cars then? I never heard of anyone really doing anything else than clear coating it. Or other brands.. or why they offer GR Yaris with exposes carbon fibre (coated) in Japan? And on GR Corollas.

I'm not trying to be defensive as I don't own a GR yet, but I will soon and I was considering my options regarding the roof.

I’d still expect a clear-coated roof to last much longer than a sticker. BMW M cars have been mass-producing clear-coated carbon roofs for years, and while they occasionally have issues, they've generally held up well over time—far more reliably than the sticker Toyota uses. My buddy’s daily-driven E92 M3 with over 150,000 miles still has a pristine carbon roof. I seriously doubt any GR Yaris carbon sticker will last 10+ years if it's used daily.
