GR Yaris (Gen 2) GR Yaris Mk2 (MY2024->)

I already have my Nürburgring edition. At a much cheaper price…

I have a feeling Toyota is starting to overhype the whole “Morizo Masterdriver special edition” thing.

From what we’ve seen so far, it’s really not that special to reason a 200 limited edition, and therefore probably ridiculous price tag.

Unless it includes his original, used, racing suit with the extra smells, for some hardcore fans, maybe…(?)

TRUTH!!! when I order my GR Yaris Gen2 back in april 2024, all the dealers keep telling me " you better hurry Up, they don't gonna make much cars, only 300 for Spain bla bla bla" 😂😂😂 and today we have 30 differents versions and another one is coming tomorrow😂 Talk about " exclusivity" soon there Will be more GR Yaris than golf 7 R

Staff: Morizo-san, I hear you got a new car?
Morizo: Ehhh!
Staff: What kind of car is it?
Morizo: A mid-engined two-seater!
Staff: That one?
Morizo: Yeah, yeah, that one.
Staff: So, what are you planning to do with it?
Morizo: It’s fine as is, but…
Staff: Don’t you want to do something more with it?
Morizo: Something more… yeah.
Staff: I want to have it ready in time for the Tokyo Auto Salon, but…
Morizo: Will you make it?
Staff: Let’s exhibit it!
Morizo: Is that okay?
Staff: The rest is up to the car!

Wasn’t that the daihatsu that was revealed?

plus a proper manual.

I don’t get why people have got so hung up on this, the car Morizo RR is a homage to the rookie racing car that Morizo drove at the Nurburgring 24hr which used the DAT box and won its class.

The same car was used in super Taikyu and the rear engined 4 cylinder also uses the DAT box so I think that is proper enough.

Now you might have a preference but that’s no different to picking a colour of the car you buy.

I have to say I do really enjoy my auto particularly the rapid downshifts.
Something I do think on is what it will take power and torque-wise.
Have seen Edoardo Jannone's (?) video after his rebuild it seemed to be power limited for the work that had been done. Might be wrong though.

I love my auto, and as it is my only car obviously it is my daily. Both decent for classic traffic annoyance but also capable for sporty driving, also for me there would be specific issue! When I am carrying skis the ski bag ends nearly above the gear selector, with manual shifting would be total pain in the ass :ROFLMAO:

To anyone interested in this, my last take about having both a manual and an auto MK2...
To my surprise, I'm growing more and more fond to the DAT one.
I was much wary about an auto gear applied to a car like the GRY, and in fact my first order was for a manual GRY.
But in the end, to summarize it in a few words, I feel that 8 gears are much more suited to the GRY than the 6 gears of the manual one.
And once i got more acquainted to the working logic of the DAT gear, I'm feeling very comfortable with it, even when pushing harder.
So, by now, if I'd been asked which one I'd keep in my garage if I'd be forced to "downsize" to just one GRY, I'd stick to the DAT one, with almost no doubt.
Hence, my utter congrats to GR for designing the DAT gear the way they did, it really surprised me in a very positive way.

Wow, hit a nerve, didn’t it?

An automatic is not a proper gearbox for most enthusiasts and it never will be. Doesn’t matter if it’s quicker on paper, quicker on lap times, or if Morizo himself says it’s great. That’s not what people mean when they talk about a proper gearbox.

This has been argued to death for decades. It’s not about numbers, it’s about engagement. A manual is part of the experience. You’re doing the work. You’re involved. That’s the whole point.

As long as manufacturers keep offering both manual and auto in the same model, the manual will keep being seen as the “proper” gearhead choice because it’s the more engaging one. I could’ve used a different word than “proper,” sure, but the idea doesn’t change. In enthusiast circles, manual is the default answer.

And nobody is saying you should be forced into buying a manual. Autos have plenty of valid reasons. Traffic, convenience, consistency, whatever. It’s not about one being morally correct. It’s just that one is seen as the enthusiast pick by most people.

The market proves it. Manuals hold value because demand is higher. Look at older cars where both existed. The E46 M3 6MT are selling for double the price of the SMG. Yes, double. That’s not because SMG is “fine,” it’s because people don’t want it. When the GR Yaris is done, the same thing is going to happen.

So yeah, for cars like this, most people who actually care will call the manual the “proper” gearbox.

Or is the word “proper” canceled now too? Should I say the manual “identifies as” the proper gearbox so that feelings aren’t hurt?

Sounds like a debate whether skiing or snowboarding is cooler…

What @markku did, is the ideal thing. Just have them both!

Just use the word manual?

But no nerves hit I’ve owned both and the Yaris just didn’t have a great gearbox so swapped, my other cars a manual just I don’t get a hard on when changing gear. Like the snowboard vs ski thing we’re all different. For gen2 in the UK it was around 50/50 for manual vs auto.
