GR86 Exhausts

Perrin sounds about right from watching some you tube vids.

What's it like for motorway drone?

No drone, unless it married to a noisy front pipe.

I've removed my Hayward and Scott Helmholtz cat back from my GT86 which was based on the Ark Grip and will be attempting to fit it on the GR, had a great sound but with zero drone on the motorway so it's a keeper imo!

There is a new exhaust due for release which is a game changer for me...

It sounds awesome, but more importantly some of the resonators do not use packing material, which is basically unheard of for aftermarket exhausts. Packing compacts and degrades over time so the tone and volume changes, something that bugs me as I have noticed this previously, especially if you are in it for the long run 5+ years. Thats sold it for me.

That sound great. I think I prefer that Touring version. Sounds like a deeper, less farty sound.

Can't get a price, they sell through dealers. How much on top would it be shipping and import duties?

I'd go for the same, the one in the video is the Track version.

Officially released yesterday. The track version is a bit gimmicky, no engineering marvel there its just a silencer delete with a small fibre packed bullet resonator in the centre pipe.

Track edition is 5.5kg lighter than stock.

The touring does have a 'twin can' layout with their own design resonators, these are the ones with no packing. From their blurb it looks to me like a type of Helmholtz resonator.

Touring edition is 0.5kg lighter than stock.

Both are 304 stainless (standard really) with a combo of 3" and 2.5" diameters, power gains are negligible (2bhp 1lb/ft). You have choice of black or chrome 5" slash cut tips which is nice.

As for the sounds...

No mention of price, but they aren't the quietest so I'd probably steer away if your plans are to replace any sections further up the exhaust otherwise it will be LOUD.

These do sound great; personally, I do prefer the track exhaust (gives me Porsche vibes, rather than early noughties antisocial Scooby…)
The only issue, as you point out is that these are LOUD, which will probably steer me away as I’d rather have something a little more subtle for my daily haha.

Here is a video comparing two JDL 3" exhaust setups, with decatted header and catted / resonated front pipe:

Here the time stamps, to ignore the talking.

1.38 - Dual Exit - Cold Start
2:30 - Dual Exit - Drive By
3:03 - Dual Exit - Cabin
10:37 - Single Exit - Cold Start
11:50 - Single Exit - Drive By
12:30 - Single Exit - Cabin

Probably a bit loud for me but that single exit looks pukka

Really liked the sound of the AWE exhaust. Messaged the UK supplier and this was their response :(

I read that the GR86 didn’t have a GPF due to port injection. Someone on here enlightened me to that fact and I got a bit excited as the car won’t sound shit!

There was some chat on the GPF/OPF for EU cars on GR86.org:

I have asked Toyota UK to confirm if the GR86 is fitted with one. I don't think the latter GT86's had them so don't see why they'd be introduced for a bored out version of the same NA engine. From reading about GPF/OPF's they seem to mainly be fitted on turbocharged petrols which is why the UK importers of the AWE products may be having problems with the VAG & BMW's which will have blowers.

Would be good if anyone has a definitive answer while I wait for Toyota UK as I've ordered a Invidia Q300 cat back which is coming from the USA!

Watching this thread with interest. I had the ACE CS400 header with an Ecutek tune on my GT86. It sorted out the torque dip, but I wasn't keen on the sound, and never found much of a way to improve it without going too loud for my liking (header had to be catless to sort the torque dip). But as the GR86 seems to have got rid of that issue I'm hoping I won't have to bother with a new header and can just get a decent catback this time.

So far I'm interested in the HKS Hi-Power Spec L and maybe the Borla S-Type
