Electric Cars

Before I went for the GR , was looking at the electric option only to find out the cost of an extension lead that stretches over a mile is very expensive and it's a bugger to wind back on to it's reel

When you live with one as a daily/work-horse then you're not driving it for enjoyment, you're driving it for convenience and EV's, particularly Tesla's, excel in this area. Let's face it, 90% of people out there don't give a damn what they drive or how it drives, as long as it gets them from A to B.
Have to agree.

In contrast, my wife loves our BEV and I don't mind driving it either, but only as a contrast to the GRY....

As for environmental impact, it's not a fixed calculation, not a fixed easy comparison. Only Volvo has afaik a proper publication of comparable cars. Most ICE are on their very peak of 'greeness' and calcs are based on the still optimistic WLTP consumption of which a deterioration has a much larger impact then a similar deterioration on a BEV....
BEV production has only begun and have a lot of improvement left in 'greeness', same can be said about the electricity's source energy mix, it will improve under the lifetime of the BEV. So yes, there is a better future but it's not a fix-it-all.

Over here I'm charging on ~80% wind energy rest is hydro... so our BEV is a more or less a high-tech sailing car propelled by the wind and rain... Quite nice imagery... and no electric motor whine either in our rwd id4 to spoil that sense... Before I get accused of sitting on a high horse again, remember I love driving my GRY even more ;)

I'd quite like a Honda E to get to work and back in, I only commute for 7 miles a day so the Yaris is never warm by the time I get to work anyway. I think most peoples cars are just transportation pods anyway, I'm all for those people converting to electrics so there's more petrol for enthusiasts like us.

BEV for shortish commutes and town driving are unbeatable. The fuel cost saving is ridiculous.

We ain't saving the environment by making more stuff but we should clean up the air quality a little. Bah it's all there to sell us more stuff, if car makers cared so much they wouldn't have made so many diesels then fixed the figures. They need to sell product and that's it; the only way they can save the environment is to tear down their factories and plant trees on them.

I think, once a AWD Hot hatch EV arrives many will change their views. I was waiting years for the GR4, now im waiting on the AWD EV hot hatch....... Many other car sites say that we will own 2 cars, one a ICE for longer journeys and longer drives and a EV for the shorter trips. To charge at home.
Isnt there a law out or coming out that the new home chargers prevent you from charging during the day ? Due to the shortage of available power from the grid. ?

FYI Our Swedish municipality already has a policy that your grid fee is dependant on two highest peak power measurements in a month that are made every hour during weekdays between 7-19 o'clock. Outside those hours power peaking is free (up to your house fuse). This has been in force long before BEV became a thing, it just makes sense power grid wise...

Isn't this one of the reasons for smart meters that will have different tariffs at different times of the day, seems we are becoming more controlled as time goes by.

“Off Peak” electricity tariffs are nothing new , a big chunk of the power generation capacity was/is there to make sure the supply is reliant when everyone cooks at 6 o’clock etc. With a move in the U.K. to offshore wind it makes sense to try and get folk to use it at night when demand is lowest and turbines can still generate. It’s simple supply and demand , no different to going to the pub for “happy hour” when beer is cheap because that’s when they are usually short of customers 🍺😉

I don't really see how you can ever have a connection with a soulless machine. Much better to have a living, breathing horse, with it's own moods and emotions, that requires training from birth to follow your command.

These ICE vehicles will never catch on. We have far too many stables, blacksmiths, and paddocks already in place for horses. We would have to build smooth paved roads suitable for car wheels instead of the current dirt tracks, and lets not even begin to consider how the hell we are supposed to dig oil out of the ground, refine it, and ship it half way around the world for less than the cost of some locally grown grain!

lol

Funny that the likes of the green propaganda machines like the BBC haven't been mentioning this

So your transportation pod is outside your house with 5 miles 'range' left, and you're not allowed to charge it on your own home charger which you've probably paid for, nor have you enough 'range' to go out and try and find an available public charger..so you've just got to look at it out the window until the evening?
lol Beyond satire

:ROFLMAO: just brilliant

This country is a bit batshit sometimes.
You don't have that all to yourselves........

Here we are Clean Green 100% Pure New Zealand burning more imported Indonesian coal than ever because we don't have enough renewable capacity in the grid

They will force us into electric vehicles even though there is no where near enough infrastructure for we have now let alone the massive increase they want.....

The traditional use of vehicles here & distances traveled outside the major cities here doesn't fit well with electric vehicles here

And to top it all off there are around 68 Million in the UK compared to only 5 million of us here in.... 10% more area....

So no matter what we do it will have such a meaningless meniscal effect in the grand scheme of things especially given the cost to us

Lets not talk about the top three China, USA or India.......

(switch off during day articles)

Switch off bit drastic.

But you're all thinking bit like ICE. Well then. Imagine having a V-power fuel point at your home, wouldn't that be great? But you can only use it before leaving from home in the morning, or in the evening (or during the night). How often will you not have fueled it up in the morning? And how often will you have fuelled it up in the morning AND have to return home during the day to fuel it up again? Is it really such a big problem?

Not sure whether that means you agree or disagree lol. I just meant as enthusiasts I think we're in a small minority, I don't think that most people really care about how their cars sound and feel, as long as they are convenient/comfy/look cool/easy to use/whatever is on their priority list etc.

Most average folk (maybe call them “non-enthusiasts“ ) just want a box on wheels to get them from A to B , my neighbours are not “car enthusiasts“ , bought a Kia BEV a year ago and absolutely love it, never heard them moan once about charging, range or anything. It may come as a shock but some folk actually like BEVs 🤷‍♂️

As others have said regarding exhaust noise , if BEVs make our town centre quieter so you can have a drink outside and not think you‘ve been transported to to a race weekend somewhere it’s not a bad thing. 👍

Who cares what 'car sites' say or predict. Typically journalists who jumped on the transportation train asap, as many are just that- paid journalists not enthusiasts.

And regarding the 'charging' remark. That'd be funny if it materialized. So you'll have a transportation pod outside ones home and they'd be 'not allowed' charge it in the day, so they go to a 'charging centre' to see them all full, transportation podders having charger rage, and waiting 30 mins then once they finally get to plug their kettle car in.
lol get the popcorn
Here you go, it starts next month and why i purchased 2 (non smart chargers) last year ;)

SWitch off CHargers during the day

Its a good idea 👍 It's no different to everyone going to fill their car up at the same time, tanks run empty at one station, everyone hears about it instantly, immediately goes to fill their car , fuel can and whatever will hold liquid, virtually the entire country is out of fuel within 24 hours , but that's a bit far fetched 😂

Why should those selfish BEV drivers stop me having my tea when I want it instead of charging overnight when electricity is cheap and I'm asleep 😂

And in true British fashion we do appear to love a good doom and gloom story . How about by 2030 petrol will cost £10 a litre , if you can find any , or £20 for Porsche GPower, ( Porsche owners only) 🤔
