GR86 Anyone unplugged the sound generator?

Can someone photo what plug it is? Is it the white one you can see if you take the side cover off by the glovebox? How does it unclip?
Here you go mate...

The retention clip is accessed from the glovebox side, unclip the glovebox damper and swivel it up out the way, poke a flatblade through the gap to press in the tab and lever it down, or reach round and get your fingers in to pull it down (mind the metal bracket its quite sharp) it's not in tight in there.

I took this when I was trying to unplug mine yesterday, hopefully that gives you a good idea of what it looks like.

The push tab is on the other side of the connector, I couldn't have got to it without going through the top of the glovebox and using a long flat head screwdriver to push the tab in and then pushing down at the same time to pull the connector out.

My connectors and switches arrived this morning, so I blew the dust off my cheap Wilko's soldering iron (which takes about 30 minutes to get what it calls "hot") and with a lot of muttering and swearing, I managed to knock up this ghetto contraption.

Nowhere near as neat and tidy as @86GR managed, but gave me what I want which was a way to switch ASC off while leaving it plugged in.

And wouldn't you know it, it only bloody worked! Plugged it in and went for a drive with the switch like so...I was able to reach over and flick off the ASC while on the move to test it.

Ive now put the glovebox back on with the switch just hanging over the back of it...won't be able to easily reach while driving, but to honest, I think it's going to stay switched off. The engine note sounds quieter for sure, but it made me realise the ASC was quite intrusive; I already don't miss it.

Also done it today with the Ali-express connector, double checked it before plugging back incase I had crossed any wires! Good to hear the real sounds, but unsure which way it will stay switched. Feedback is useful when rev-matching on downshifts etc. Attached the pictures of the rear of the connector I took to see which pins were used.

Went for a proper drive this morning and I've arrived at the same conclusion as everyone else anyway - the car definitely sounds better with it disabled. I'm convinced I'm able to drive more smoothly with it off as well - I feel like perhaps it kind of masked the engine note a little too much and made it harder to judge, even though the car is now quieter...counter intuitive I know. But it feels "smoother" to me.

As you know I have on/off and reduced volume with a series resistor, if you’ve gone to the trouble of making up the connector, it’s only a few minutes to add the resistor and worth it in my opinion. Toning down the volume makes it sound far less artificial and let’s you also hear more of the natural intake noise, but subtly enhances the sound.

Did you build that yourself?

Can you explain what to do?

Thanks, but I am just going to leave it for now. I should have a new exhaust arriving in the next month or so anyway, so don't really anticipate wanting to experiment with it further - I'm already happy enough as it is fully off. Appreciate some might prefer to keep is just at the lowered volume though.

Not very well :D

The connectors are supplied separately as a male/female pairing with cable tales already attached to each of the 16 pins.
- First thing I did was identify which of the cables would be unnecessary and just cut them off (see @FRAJ's excellent pictures above my post. As you can see, the existing connector only has 8 wires and @86GR already detailed what they are earlier).
- Once I'd removed the unnecessary wires from both connectors, I then soldered the remaining tails together so they corresponded - so what you're left with it essentially a short passthrough loom which sits between the existing male connector and the female socket on the ASC module.
- As 86GR said above, the yellow/green wires are the speaker positive/negative. On my new loom passthrough, I cut the cable which corresponded to the green wire and attached each end to the little rocker switch.

Apologies - I should perhaps have documented things better as I went. But, being honest, this is a lot of work for what it achieves, so I didn't think many would want to emulate it. It would probably be easier to just unplug the thing, take it for a drive, and then plug it back in. Especially for you Kosh - your vehicle is left-hand drive, so I think the connector is even easier for you to access - for RHD cars, we have to take the glovebox out.

Thx a lot

I needed two thinks
1. the "name" or type of the connectors, maybe you can help me out with that?
2. which cable to cut(and conenct to teh switch), but it should be the green one, right?

1. I ordered these connectors (16pin version): https://www.aliexpress.com/item/100...o.order_list.order_list_main.5.35fa18025UwfvH
...and these switches: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/400....order_list.order_list_main.11.12561802ssdzB8

However, if you want to mimic @86GRs setup and include resistors for volume adjustment, see this post: https://www.gr-zoo.com/threads/anyone-unplugged-the-sound-generator.3161/post-56247

2. It can be either green or yellow (they are just the +/- power for the speaker) - I connected the switch to the green one, simply as it was closest to the edge of the connector, so easiest to split out.

Thx a lot. again.

Sadly the first link does not open (in my country).
Any keywords for that connectors?

Because I could not find the connectors, I bought a "kit"

I got this, but the connectors are complete different.
Any ideas, where to put this?

I don't recognize the connections in your picture. If @86GR hadn't linked to the Ali-Express ones I don't think I would have found it. As above, the description is "Dj7086s-0.7" and the "16p" version.

if anybody is interested:

Somebody in the German forum found it out:
Its the conenctor for the speaker itself, which is hidden behind the clima controlls.
You have to disassemble half of teh interior to get to it...

I had intended to get my local Toyota dealer to disable the speaker but I got impatient and disconnected it myself last weekend. Very easy to do and should be easily reversible. I prefer it this way in case I ever change my mind.

Disconnected makes a big difference to how the car sounds and feels and I much prefer it off. The car now seems more refined at all revs, maybe too much as it's now hard to hear or feel the engine unless you're thrashing it. What you can hear now is proper mechanical/ metallic engine noises. Not exhaust, not intake and certainly not fake!

In any case, I now love the car a little bit more.

I'm kind of annoyed that Toyota/Subaru went to the trouble of developing and installing the speaker but made it sound crap.
