Now that I know the air filter won't be replaced until the car is 4 years old (according to the service schedule), I've decided to get a third party one.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

I'm think ITG.

£35-40 for a stock panel, most of the aftermarket ones are more expensive and likely not as good. That said, I believe only the BMC tested ever so slightly better than the stock panel.

In what sense was it better, i.e. how were they tested?

Non OEM are only about £10 more so it's not a big risk.

I’m sure I saw a graph on the old forum that minor bhp gain (granted that is challengeable!) for similar filtration.

It’s the quality of filtration, usually by assessing the engine oil after a run, that’s the most important with a panel filter.

Update - I have ordered an ITG one and will report back. £50 delivered and an OEM one was 40ish.

The car is nearly 2 years old and still on the original one so it needs doing anyway.

AFAIK, it’s every 4 years or 40.000 km, according to the service schedule In the car manual.

Having said that when I did my 40.000 km check, in the Toyota system at the dealer didn’t show as something that needed changing. I’ve enquired Toyota about it, on the discrepancy between manual and the actual service and the answers they have provided so far, aren’t good enough.

So I received my ITG filter and put it in today. One thing I noticed was after 2 years and 7k miles the OEM one was quite brown/dirty. I'm not sure if 2 more years on it is would be a good idea.

Anyway, ITG in and a quick test drive and it's quite nice, the car feels like it's slightly more responsive at low speeds and the whoosh noise is a bit more pronounced.

All in all I'm happy and would recommend if your OEM one needs replacing anyway. I wouldn't get one if my car was quite new as the OEM one is perfectly fine too.

Depends where you drive. mine was rather clean after 1yr and 20tkm.

It's worth noting I had to get rid of the ITG because it clearly wasn't filtering very well. I had my oil analysed by millers 3k after installing and they found lots of silicon and aluminium in it (dirt). Not had the same issue with BMC.

This is great that people are actually testing these products, rather than just stating that ‘they noticed that throttle pick up was improved’.

You can kind of guess by looking at the filter how well it’s going to do. If you swapped out the paper filter in an aeropress with a bit of large pore sponge, you could expect the coffee to taste a bit gritty and horrible.

All of the above advice has been noted but I will be keeping the ITG for a year to get my value out of it and the car is also driving a bit better. Perhaps my old filter was just dirty and a new OEM one would give the same results.

My main concern was that the OEM air filter is only replaced every 4 years or 20k miles.
