Oh I'll bin mine before I clean it there is no way I'm spending a Sunday morning oiling an air filter.

It's worth noting I had to get rid of the ITG because it clearly wasn't filtering very well. I had my oil analysed by millers 3k after installing and they found lots of silicon and aluminium in it (dirt). Not had the same issue with BMC.
This echoes analyses I've seen done in the past with aftermarket foam filters; they may* liberate a bit of hp or improve response, but that is almost inevitably because they present less resistance to the incoming air flow, and there's really only one way they manage that compared to a competent OEM part.

*lot of confirmation bias potential here!

I'd be curious to see this sort of thing for all the aftermarket intakes/filters, how likely is it they get at least part of the increase in airflow/performance from poorer filtration?

It’s been covered in quite a few earlier threads, but the test results certainly swayed me into sticking with the original paper or an oiled gauze type like K&N (although one poster noted that the oiled type can cause problems with the MAF sensor). The foam filters let loads of crap into the engine, something like 5 times the amount of dirt than OE one, which is fine for a race engine that gets rebuilt every few races, not so much for a road car you intend to keep forever.

When you think about it, why would Toyota specify a substandard filter when they have performance targets to achieve AND a 10 year warranty on the engine to honour?

I’m inclined just to change the OE one more often than the service book suggests. If you took the filter out completely I doubt the engine would produce 1 extra bhp.
