GR86 1st Service

Thanks. Quite useful. Although I'm not sure you're right about the 10 years and 10 months, as I think the warranty can be extended up to 10 years, and the fact that the last service would have been done 2 months before the 10 years probably doesn't change that.

The Toyota extended warranty coverage is extended by 1 year/10k miles at the point of service. The service needs to be carried out within the car's first 10 years and 100k miles to be eligible for the warranty extension.

So in theory you could service it a day before its 10th birthday and get warranty coverage all the way until the day before it reaches 11 years.

Oo, thank you. Happy to have guessed wrong.

[Toyota] For the first three years of your new car’s life, the manufacturer warranty is in place and an owner can have the car serviced wherever they choose. After the expiry of the manufacturer warranty, owners who choose to have their Toyota serviced at an official Toyota centre will benefit from an additional 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, until your car is either ten years old or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first).
After several failed attempts to take out a service plan with my local dealership network (you'd have thought they might show an interest in taking my money but, they never got back to me at all!), I'll now be using an independant Japanese Car Specialist whilst the standard manufacturer's 3yr warranty is in place. If I manage to keep the car past it's third birthday then I shall return to the dealer network for servicing, even though it's more expensive, just for the 'safety net' of an ongoing Toyota GR warranty. A PITA for sure but needs must I suppose...

No reason not to take it to an independent in its first three years.

I'd be doing the same if I had not managed to get a discounted service plan cover with Toyota, and I still dread of leaving my car with them every time its due for a service, or anything else for that matter.

We were discussing this very issue at the Boxing Day Blether. Why is it that the customer parking at most of the dealerships is so bloody terrible? It makes me nervous to visit just to pick up a part, never mind leaving it there to go through the full service and the associated 'hope they don't scratch it, hope they don't wash it, please don't dink it' worries that go with dropping your car off for a whole day ...

I left that as feedback when Toyota called. Literally not enough parking at dealerships.

What Japanese car specialists have you found. I haven't been able to find much (West Coast around Glasgow).

Hypertech in Bonnybridge. He admits his website is woefully out of date but is too busy to update it. He used to run a modified GT86 himself (kept for over 10 years) and is the 'go to' place for the Scoobie and Evo crowds. Quoted £250 for 1st Service with OEM materials and OEM+ oil. There's also Japcom in East Kilbride?

Frustratingly high prices being quoted for the simple oil change service, really.

My independent charged me for 45 min labour (took a bit longer to fully drain it tbh) for the oil filter + oil change when I did my 1000 miles interim service in April.

I managed to get the Miller's 5l oil and the OEM Subaru filter + sump washer for under £60, so the total cost was around £100.

Granted, I have a good relationship with my garage, so I was charged a discounted rate, got to watch the service and inspect the discarded oil, but it's not exactly a difficult car to work on.

Agree with you there! An hour of labour at most plus materials. That said, with energy costs for an industrial unit going from £2k per month to £11k+ per month, it’s not much of a surprise that prices have gone up too.

I've got all this to do in February time, it's not filling me with much hope. I have a choice of two dealers (one closer to home, the other closer to work), both in the same 'group'. One is a 'GR centre and the other one not.
With all this talk of good indy's doing servicing, I may well buy the stuff needed and approach a couple of trusted VAT registered (they have to be that I believe) garages. My previous car always required dealer software updates and things, but I don't think this is needed with the GR86.
I'll walk into the 'GR' centre first and see if it's a flat 'NO' to any bargaining on the price.

I had a '1st service' reminder from my supplying dealer today, so popped in on my way home from work. The 'service advisor' with the top knot, told me the service items (Oil, oil filter, cabin filter, top up screen-wash and a general check over of the vehicle) and asked if I wanted to book it in.
Me : "Well how much does it cost"
SAwTK: "Oh, I'll find out"
SAwTK: " It's only £315"
Me: "Is that the best you can do, no flexibility on that"
SAwTK: "No sorry it's a fixed price"
Me: "I'll let you know . . ."

I might try the other dealer, near where I work, but they're in the same dealer group, so I might end up down the indy route

(Is a cabin filter replacement really necessary after 12 months?)

Cabin filter is Inspect at first service (interim) and Replace at year 2 (full). I doubt they’ll replace it so early tbh. By the way, £315 is the Toyota fixed price servicing cost so I think it’ll be the same at most, if not all, dealerships.

Mine was £270. I booked online and apparently that qualified me for a discount, was the same for my GR Yaris service earlier in the year.

They work the 10 service plans on the current service & MOT costs
5 x intermediate @ £315
5 x full @ £470
8 x MOT's @ £54.85
Total £4,363/120 =£36.36 per month

Although no discount, its fixed for 10 years so no increase when they up the service costs, the only potential increase is if the VAT rate changes

I think its a good deal

Had my first service (now 12 months old and done 2500 miles) today at the supplying dealer Toyota Cardiff - it was originally Wilson’s but is now FRF. All seemed to go fine - I double checked before hand that they had the filter in stock and it seems they did! Also of note they seemed to hoover the inside but not wash the outside (I didn’t specify either way) so maybe it’s a standard “do not wash GRs”?
Got mine booked for tomorrow at Cardiff too. Only now learning of the issues getting the filters so hope all goes smoothly.

Might be worth joining the Toyota Owners Club premium. Cost me £20 for 12 months but my dealership offers 15% discount on all parts and servicing.

I looked at that too but, it’s dealership specific and none around here offer any discount for membership, which is infuriating as the Lexus Scheme is dealership wide.

How can you find out which dealers offer the discount, I couldn’t see a list on the website? Or do you have to ask your local dealer?

Was changed by the dealer that did the first service on mine (Snows Plymouth) as part of the fixed price.

Yes. Up here Eastern/Western Toyota used to be part of it but when I asked they believed that the ‘scheme’ had finished a year or so back … Best ask your local service department.
