Some things that can make an exhaust suddenly get much louder. Exhaust leak somewhere. Sound absorbing packing material (fiberglass, etc.) got blown out (from resonator, muffler, etc.). Catalytic convertor's internal media broken or blown out. You'll sometimes see honeycomb-like material...

How about cut a slit in one side of a rubber grommet and put the grommet around the cable(s). Or a zip tie?

So these are random scratches, not concentric circles like from dirty/dry wiper blades dragging across the glass?
