Öhlins is a large term. If you mean Öhlins Road & Track then this is just a mediocre kit with a limited working window. You could compare it with Bose. They had a great marketing but the product is nothing special really.
It’s all about expectations, I guess.
Ohlins R&T is a consumer grade set of dampers, and for the money they cost (around 3k) they do the job well and give adjustability to the stock car making it more usable on different environments. I don’t think is mediocre. You get what you pay for.
Of course, you cannot compare them to Ohlins TTX, Reigers or other motorsport stuff. Neither in terms of cost nor service schedule and of course, performance. It’s a completely different league.
Now, for a upper average user, they are good. I’ve driven GR Yaris with Nitron’s from Litchfield, KW v3, I think, and Ohlins R&T, and they all are better than stock in most circumstances, and for me Ohlins R&T is the one with the best feeling, on and off track.
Maybe, If I would have found an option with a rear coilover I would have gotten that instead, with a reasonable service schedule vs hours of use. I can’t afford to have the dampers redone every 10-20k km and be without the car for days or weeks once a year.
