GR Yaris Balance of tuning and durability limits

And here I am with just over 400 (engine hp) thinking my car is fast. 😬

Wonder what twice the power would feel like? 🤩

Well it is, and no way this power level will last on track sustained - with typical efficiency it needs to cool off ~2000kW of heat then and it doesn't look as having anywhere near that cooling capacity... , unless that track is a dragstrip and even then things will probably break on regular intervals....

Yes, that's probably what will will happen.

But even so. Just knowing these power levels are being reached, showes how capable this little engine is in its base.

yep it begins to be on serious level of power, especially given its from three pot 1.6cyl.
Just add sufficient cooling.

Maybe Yamaha should do an engine to F1 now. just downsize GR engine and add few extra cyls..

I like to know how much boost pressure, plus 3 Bar? and what type of fuel.

Guaranteed E85 minimum, and yes about 3 bar needed unless it had had massive head work (which I haven't seen yet and doesn't seem to be part of mod list)

I was thinking a mixture of E85 and some type of race fuel.

Had a discussion with my tuner about this car. He thinks that a g30-1050 was used as a turbo. He also thinks it was a low boost. But as we have no other info and based on torque/rpm curve we both guess its a kamikaze build.
Still interested at what was done as we are preparing our car to pass 600 ourselves.
Some info without telling details i want to keep to myself just yet.
We ran e85 at 1.8 bar. We found that the injection system could not keep up. So we are rebuilding to a double fuel system.
Also we are going from a g25-550 to most likely a hybrid version of that turbo.
Furthermore we are looking at the oil system but have not yet decided between hybrid, dry sump or normal.
The car is still at the wrapper and the most essential part we need for our build was shot down as inadequate. We are now looking into how what and where regarding that.
As for our tune, the way it is currently tuned is that the syvecs hardly has to correct anything. From what I understand, this is regarded as a safe tune.
So back to the 740hp. It is unclear to me what mods were made to the engine and whether it is still an open deck but with upgraded studs or whether the pistons and rods were upgraded. So i am keen to learn more as it helps me understanding weak points:)

The lamspeed car with the quarter mile record had forged piston and rods and modified the block to closed deck afaik. I expect at least the same here? Dunno...

I think you would be correct.
Makes no sense running OEM pistons/rods and risk destroying the block due to a failure. Plenty of aftermarket parts available there.
I can't see how you would make that kind of power without lots of boost (pressure) and rpm, in this case both.
Maybe there are using a shot of Nitrous?.

I have searched for more info on that car aswell but can't find anything useful.

If I read the dynosheet correctly it goes to over 8000 rpms which indicates some aggressive cams and probably some headworks. Although this engine seems to be rather good flowing there is always room for improvement.

It's most certainly forged piston/rods and a closed deck to cope with the boost.

Really impressed with this little machine but at this powerlevel you will destroy a lot of the drivetrain. And the cooling (as already pointed out) needs to be upgraded/redesigned if they are going to use the power for more than a short dyno or drag run.

A friend of mine just went into the middle 8's with his Urquattro dragcar, making 1200 whp from 2.2L and it normally holds over a weekend (if lucky) so I guess it's called reliable? 🤣

Not disagreeing with you just sharing information what we have done so far to complement.
We use the kelford b cams and springs and run 7800 rpm on our tune. We did not modify the head (yet) or other engine parts other than stock. But the difference in peak power has such a large gap that we were also baffled.
So in short; the engine has more surprises then we accounted for:)
Edit: put up our ethanol dynograph for comparison.

Thats some nice figures. 🏁
I also run Kelford cams and springs and on the same boost it made 40hp more so definitely needs more breathing. My redline is 7600 and now its making power all the way up there instead of running out of breath 1500 rpms earlier with the original stuff.

Next thing is to look at all the "plumbing". On my pretty small hybrid turbo it made another 40hp with bigger intake, intercooler piping, turbo inlet and so on.

I'm moving on to E85 this summer and my tuner isn't worried that the head won't breath enough. Probably will max out the turbo before that. But then again I'm nowhere near +600hp so things might look very diffrent if someone is looking for that kind of power.

If the head flows and the rods hold, revs are an 'easy' way to get more power at the same torque/boost. Shifting peak power from 5500 to 8000rpm (at the same torque) gives you 45% more power. Sometimes bit overlooked on boosted engines...

I love it when an engine revs out properly. I have no idea of actual hp, but on my daily I have some better flowing IC, HJS cat and soon turbo inlet, and add +0,25bar more boost at 7k rpm (ramping up from +0,06bar at 5k rpm) and now the car is fun to rev out with reliability hopefully very similar to stock.... If it feels slow, the roads are too straight ;)

Really impresive figures with stock internals 👍

The GR Yaris was fitted with an upgraded head gasket, along with uprated head studs. Elsewhere, the intercooler was swapped out for an aftermarket version from Plazmaman, while the three-cylinder benefits from a Garrett G30-770 turbo. Powertune Australia has also fitted a turbo exhaust manifold, intercooler piping, and a dump pipe from Golebys Parts. A MoTec Yaris Plug-in ECU also forms part of the package.
2,200cc Secondary Injectors from Bosch replace the stock items. The Yaris also receives an Elixr Brushless fuel pump and a cat-back Akrapovic exhaust system. But that's not all. Even the gearbox has been replaced with a six-speed sequential transmission from X-Shift and mated to an ATS Triple Carbon clutch.

Interestingly, Powertune Australia has decided to retain the stock rods, crank, and pistons. "We have pulled numerous engines down, and after doing a lot of comparisons and measurements, we believed we could make our target power with the stock items," said a company spokesperson.

Makes me wonder what the usage brief is. Fun car to set an odd 1/4 mile time?

"The vehicle belongs to Peter Freedman, one of Australia's richest individuals and the genius behind the RODE Microphones empire".

I've heard all sorts about Powertune and their claims both with current customer cars and the old Motive car. So far they haven't backed them up with any real world performance. Last I saw of this car it ran a mid-12's 1/4 mile because they "couldn't get the power down" but if you can't beat a GR with a stock turbo when you have 800+hp what's the point? They dabbed the brakes at the end of the run but no way they scrubbed 30mph off and added 3 seconds in that time.

Their published spec list is alarmingly short, hopefully because they're hiding something and not because they've just fitted a massive turbo and hoped for the best. I'd take their claims with a pinch of salt until we see trap speeds. Lamspeed trapped around 143mph if I remember rightly on their WR run and it has about 250hp less, i'm sure Powertune will do 155mph+ though and get in the 8's though right guys?

Dyno figures are easy to massage. Let's see what they do on the track.
