GR Yaris Overrated : Toyota GR Yaris

What annoys me about the GRY?

Seats, multimedia display, baby engine. And honestly the car is ugly as night.

I would prefer a new Evo. But it won't come to that and when I think how the 10 has developed compared to the 8 (had both), I probably don't want one anymore.

So back to the GRY...

The engine gets almost 400hp. The seats are thrown out. Display still sucks.
It is very light (for today's cars). Sticks to curves like a board. Haven't found an alternative yet, and im not interested in front scratchers like Ford.

All in all, as a pure curve robber, there is still no alternative for me. I'm only talking about new vehicles.
 
I agree with all of this reporter’s points. But lacking a modern alternative there is only one solution from my perspective. Upgrade, Modify and improve. Bought the car 1 year ago and still at the garage for its modifications. Some parts took over 9 months to arrive and the next level is in design. But once done and properly set-up on a race track, it will be a very exciting road car (as that is my assumption:)

According to PH’s the intercooler have responded to the article. Anyone seen the response?

But it was based on a too-brief launch drive on not especially great roads near TGB's HQ, plus it was one of the first times we'd all been let out of the cage post-Covid. So maybe my brain wasn't working properly. This piece is based on several much longer drives since, plus time in it on a couple of different tracks, all of which has left me wanting more from the GR. Hope that makes sense"

And Ti said "he isn’t saying the car is bad, only that he doesn’t think it’s all it’s cracked up to be. That’s why his criticisms of it are very granular – specific things. He’s debunking motoring journalist hype, which must be a nett positive!"

And to be honest, I think most of his criticisms are fair & things that I've already changed on my car to address !

Some elite-level backpedaling there, and I suppose it's generated some conversation around his platform that most people haven't heard of so mission accomplished I suppose. #grumpyoldcynic

So what we can take away from that is if Steve Sutcliffe doesn’t have a long term loan car then you can discount any of his reviews.
 
I think he pretty much nailed what needs changing on the Yaris. Other journalists have said things. Henry catchpole said the steering is vague and the car is good not great. Harry metcalfe put litchfield parts in his. I think most reviews mentioned the very high driving position which is rubbish. I do hope they tweak a few things in the next batch to make the car even better

It is a rally homologation special. I suppose the suspension‘s pivot points for struts and wishbones are designed for a relatively high rollcenter being perfect for (even rough) gravel roads. A dedicated track set-up might always be a compromise.
 
Indeed. I did the same roads back-to-back in a friend’s RX-8 yesterday. The additional seat height was noticeable, as was the way the GR could be thrown around, happily dealing with camber changes, varying surfaces etc. while the Mazda had to tiptoe to avoid being thrown off track, or even bottoming out.

The Mazda did sound better though!
 
Onehp at test drive - what a car, so much better then expected, can this be the first car I won't modify if I get one???

Onehp 18 months and ~3500 forum posts into ownership - well at least the mod list is shorter then 20 items 😂

That said, I perceive Steve is a bit of a track focused person, I bet he hasn't driven the car on loose surfaces against the cars he rates higher on track. Design brief for the GRY was 50% asphalt, 50% "off-road". So it's almost a big compliment that it's being compared to track focused cars.

UK and some other importer naming of the circuit pack adding to the confusion. In Portugal the same lsd equipped car is called Extreme Rally....

this. would be fun to do three road surfaces test among sport cars and GR: Tarmac, gravel and snow. wonder what car would excel..
