GR Yaris Overrated : Toyota GR Yaris

So someone does a professional 'diagnosis' of a car he has driven quite a few times that isn't liked by some. And in response some proceed in making a mental health diagnosis based on materials produced for the subjects job, based of a bad read of the condition ' spec sheet' of the Internet.

I’m quite happy there is no DCT so that they don’t all end up like Golf Rs in a few years :P. Too much scrolling through instagram reels and all the algorithm recommends now is “certidrivers” in these.

It’s refreshing to read something different but agree, it’s clearly written for clicks. Which is a sad feature of the way journalism is. Plus here we all are discussing it (don’t think anybody’s said that cliche yet on this thread so I’ll add it).

I'm happy that it is not automatic. would be bored with auto box. manual makes the play with Turbo lag etc. more fun. not that fast but who cares.
 
Look at the very ordinary electric cars you now get for around £35k and then compare them to the GRY. It is far from perfect but for the price I think we got a very good fun car. I think some are comparing it to cars far more costly and in those first few months people did go way over the top with their excitement and possibly built it up into something it may not quite be.
Nevertheless, it is still a fabulous little car for the price.
 
I feel discussing cars today in general is very difficult. General public discusses of running costs and range, and etc.
All those topics are somewhat irrelevant for car people. Cars are becoming "public commodities" soon, and driving skill is a loosing art.
Maybe the horsemen had similar worries back then.

I can do both. And 99,6% people I meet never were truly interested in (rally or otherwise) driving technique....

There's been many performance cars over the years which have inspired controversy and heated discussion - raved about by everyone at first and then criticised later; most people judging them positively but the odd lone voice railing against the good reviews; or underappreciated at the time and then judged fondly years later.

Examples variously have included the first Focus RS, the Honda S2000, BMW Z3 & Z4 M Roadsters and Coupes, our old friend the GT86, pretty much every 911 ever (look how the 964 RS was criticised when it came out and is seen as a very expensive hero now) - etc. etc.

It's the same with films, books, TV programmes, plays, restaurants.

As long as you buy or experience things you, yourself, like and that fit in to your life (on balance), others' views can diminish to a curious diversion, mild amusement, or background noise.

PS the GR86 is way better anyway ;)

So what you’re saying is expect an article “I regret buying a GR Yaris by Steve Sutcliffe” in 5 years time?
 
Sounds to me like he wanted it to be an Ariel Atom or a Caterham...

I've always been surprised how few journalists decided to go against the grain, as it's an easy win in terms of gaining attention for your piece. I get the actual criticisms of the car are personal opinion, some of them valid, but don't get the obsession that it should somehow be so much faster in a straight line, and far more rough and ready. If Toyota needed to sell 25k of them, I'm not sure something faster, less useable, and £40k plus was the answer. Also I couldn't have afforded it or used it, so I may be biased :)
 
Power needs a slight boost. Said that on the test drive. It's a 300bhp car and should have come with it standard. The visibility with that mirror is annoying although the standard Yaris has the same problem. Headlights are a bit shit when driving 10/10th's. Seating position is perfect for UK B roads and seeing over hedges, around corners but it's poor for a track day. The seats are brilliant.

I can't think of another manual, perm 4 wheel drive car available new today at this price point.

It does all of the other modern stuff (safety, phone) well and most of the other staff adequately.

You couldn't buy mine off me for 50k. Its the last of an era. Enjoy it while you can.
