I've never had a private number plate, mainly because I have in the past at times changed cars with nosebleed-inducing velocity, so it would be a faff and probably be expensive.

I also prefer subtle car-related plates to personal details or predilections ones - just an opinion, no reflection on anyone called D4VE E, or the owner of CAZ 69 etc.

However, now I have my lovely GR86 I'm seriously considering getting one.

I'm wondering what my comrades' thoughts on this matter are.


Edited to add - my 1,000th post, whoop. And it's not about suit hooks or pyjamas.
 
I've never been bothered about having a private plate before but it seemed more appealing to get one this time around for some reason, even though a more characterful number plate is not what makes the car.

I'm with you on the "names often look silly", so I've gone for GRZ XXX for a symmetrical and car-related plate.

Good choice, that's the sort of thing I would go for. Dateless too.
 
My first one DAL3D almost didn't happen... I'd just been promoted at work and put a bid in one of the newly created DVLA auctions and forgot about it. Then got an email saying I'd won! DAL (short for Darren) and I work with 3D CAD at work hence why I bid for it in the first place. This is the one on my GR86.

Then about 8 months before I got my Focus RS and just after they were announced, I was passed by a Mazda 3 MPS (I noticed them as I used to have one) and spotted the plate T23MPS which made sense to me... So as soon as I got home I ordered T (Turbo) 23 (2.3L) FRS (FocusRS) for £250 before DVLA realised.

Just remembered I nearly bought DAL2D years ago to have a pair but didn't have another car for it to go on at the time!
 
I have a plate that clearly spells out my name, will be going on in march when the 23 plates come out, i’ll be sure to post many pics for you 🤣
 
It's a lot easier to change plates in cars these days rather than sending the signed form off with a cheque and waiting for your new V5 to come through. Retention is now 10 years I think

My plates don't need to be weirdly (illegally) spaced to mean anything different to what they read and personally dislike ones that are. I don't especially care if anyone "gets" my plates or not - I know what they mean and that's all I care about. (y)
 
I had a personal plate many years ago but sold it with the car it was on because I got bored of transferring it. Purchased GR06ZOO for the 86, hopefully I won’t part with the car for many years but when I do the plate will go with it.

As long as it's not anything BO55 related as I see about 15 of those daily and they're always on cars driven by... unsavoury characters.

I have one that's been on retention for about 9 years as I ended up with a few company cars then bought my own cars, moved house twice and lost the documents so the 86 will be the first car it's gone on in a while.
I'm also not a fan of illegally spaced plates either, I appreciate you want it to say something but there's a reason that spacing is regulated and I like rules.
 
I went with GR66 ZOO as fits perfectly with my GR66 ( new rear badges on order😉, at £50☹️)

I did consider GR06 Z00 but to create GR86 ZOO with some strategically placed blacked fixing bolts but decided against.

On the hilarious private plate thing , funniest one I ever saw , out the window of my favourite pub 🍺 (yes I go a lot) was on a white Mclaren driven by an Insta ready“ young lady (could actually have been a very expensive RestoMod, but looked convincing through the window and several 🍺🍺👍) which read 36 DD , probably also on PCP 🤣🤣🤣
 
It's the first time I've gone with a cherished plate, too. It felt like the deserving car for it.

It has "GR" in it, isn't particularly clever or expensive, but it's a nice piece of personalisation for "Smurfette" as she'll be named.

Well I've just purchased one, so I'd better update my own poll!

It's car-related, quite subtle, and heavily inspired by @Dal3D 's rationale for the Focus RS plate, so thank you for the inspiration sir!

'Only' 250 quid too, and I was very pleasantly surprised to see no VAT, admin, DVLA fee, nor anything else added!

I also didn't realise I have TEN YEARS to add it to a car.
