GR86 GR86 Confessions

I left the passenger window open all night when it was pouring down. On the plus side I had to go for a drive to dry it out.
Also, I caved it at 900 miles and am calling it run in.
Run in the USA is 1000km, so your be fine to wring its neck until it howls, or goes pop…

The USA manual says 1000 miles. They don't use kilometres in the states.

To be fair, I think the European manual says 1000Km though. I'm kind of erring on the side of it might not actually matter all that much, so they just print the manual with "run in for 1000 (whatever your regional unit is)" :p

I won't be changing the rev warning above 4K until I get to 1000 miles though...just in case :D

It's been run in at factory anyway. I've still taken it easy but not been over 5.5k rpm to be sure. Checked the oil and is at same level, even if it's tricky to get a clear read.

1k miles mate.

I was literally about to update my post, because I actually went and downloaded the manual, and I've just found the very same paragraph, but you've beaten me to it and now I look a right tit, CHEERS MATE

I'm sure I saw someone on GR86.org in the European updates thread talking about it and posted their manual saying 1000Km, but I must have dreamt it.

:p

I’m at 700 miles and stretching it’s legs a bit now. From what I‘ve read the bore and the piston rings should be pretty much worn In after 150 miles, just need to make sure nothing gets over heated with the extra friction in those first few hundred miles. If you baby It too much there is the risk of not getting a good seal and having an engine that uses more oil and is down on power.

Jeez, some of you are going to be overtaking my Supra mileage soon. I’m only at 2700miles since the new job means I work from home 😂

I just followed the manual exactly didn't screw around because of some advice from a YouTube "expert" only took me just over a week with some dedication.

Now it's done properly!
I’m planning on keeping mine for a long time so I’ve been pretty meticulous with running in, watching the oil temps, being gentle until the engine is warm, not letting it idle for a long time, varying the revs, not lugging the engine, letting it cool between harder acceleration pulls etc., but after the first few hundred miles I have been progressively increasing the max revs, not to cut corners, but because I believe it’s the best thing to do. It doesn’t make sense from an engineering perspective to stick to 4K up to to 999, then suddenly jump to 7.5K at 1000miles.

The 4K/1000miles guidance in the book is a fairly safe generalisation to cover all conditions/ambient temps and easy for people to grasp/remember if you aren’t a car person. It probably isn’t the best or most optimal way but if you say 4K/1000miles, then most people will likely keep it under 5K for at least 100-200miles and less chance of people overheating the components than if they’d put a more optimal and complex set of instructions in.

I confess to taking my GR86 out in to the world for 1000 miles, bareback. That's right, no PPF, no ceramic coating, just straight rawdogging nature and all that brings with it.

(I have applied a great wax, but let's ignore that)

Same here! No wax! Rain, mud, crashing through floods, enjoy the car, don't just polish it!
