GR86 GR86 - The “I’m thinking of cancelling / did cancel my order” thread

My experience with considering a new Alfa Tonale as every day transport couldn’t be more different, pre launch 5 Italian registered LHD cars shipped to the U.K. , with a dedicated group of well informed sales people driving them around the U.K. and everyone who expressed an interest online invited to book a 45 minute local test drive, RHD test drive to be arranged as soon as demo cars arrive 👍😎
I'm not surprised to hear this Andy, I've mentioned before on here before my previous experience with Alfa was excellent. Really good local dealer, top buying experience, great service, and decent coffee!

What do you expect inflation is going up by at least 10% pa. Porsche now charged £190per hour! It will be an expensive business to service any car think of all that electricity used in a car dealership !
That's actually a fair point - I think for me it was just another piece of bad news on top of delays, reliability worries, lack of communication etc.

60% though...

Stick with it guys, it's going to be a great car. I'm a bit concerned about the rtv issue too, but the more I read about it, the more I think the Internet is blowing it out of proportion and we have a 10 year warranty if Toyota service it, so little to worry about.

I still can't think of anything that will suit my lifestyle/other cars more than this at the moment and nothing coming out in the future, unless I spend much more.

I don't think Toyota have kept us best informed of the delay and all the cars in Burnaston, but for me, I've been told mid 2023 at the earliest for mine and so it is what it is.

£30k and 6-24 months delivery (depending on your order time) really isn't that bad when you consider the worldwide demand for this car and all the crap that we have had to contend with in the last few years. Covid, war, potential of other wars, energy crisis, parts/raw material issues and high inflation. I'm still hoping the GR86 will give me a bit of enjoyment amongst all that has been and what might come in the future.👍

Yeah. Irritating as it is, I'm not going to cancel. That would be cutting my nose off to spite my face. I want the car - as I said before, all this will be forgotten the moment you get handed the keys.

I'm not surprised the serving costs have gone up, especially when everything else we purchase on a day to day basis has increased. I'm sure it's not just Toyota who have or will increase their servicing costs too.

Out of interest I checked how much a minor service on the wife's 500X would be, just for an oil change & inspection was £135+vat.

Before Toyota launched the 10 year warranty if serviced with them, I took out their own 2 year warranty cover on the GT86, this was, from memory, £450 for 2 years cover.

I still think the cost of the servicing is relatively cheap, and I'm looking at it that the cost of the extended warranty is built into that cost.

This is exactly where i am right now, i can’t think of any other 2+2, sub 1500 kg, rwd, lsd cars i could get as an alternative, only other option would be to carry on with 3 cars

You know those competency-based job interviews popular in the recruitment world nowadays?

Imagine the question "tell us about a time you have seen something through from start to finish in challenging circumstances".

I reckon the response "I ordered a GR86...and took delivery", delivered with a steely glare, would be a perfect, exemplar answer.

I’m likely to cancel mine next week, it was enjoyable at the start until the point of it arriving mid June and then not hearing a thing since. Was told monthly updates would happen, which never did.
Also the reliability does play a part I know it’s got the warranty, but I also know I will have the worry all the time that it’s getting blocked up and every time I flaw it thinking does it sound right. Keep reading the engines sound awful when running well at the best of times.
A few points made by others I can relate to, this will be a daily commuter and I’m now questioning do I really want or need the worry from a company that doesn’t care at this stage.

I feel better about it all for venting earlier - thanks for listening comrades! It's been cathartic.

I'm torn, I really am. Although I'm still close to cancelling, a part of me does wonder if I'll regret this later.

Also, we've made it this far; should I just push on through and see it out to the end?

Would Frodo Baggins have got to the bottom of the mountain and thought "f**k this I'm off home", after 10 screen-hours of arduousness? (I watched all three Lord of the Rings films in one day at the cinema last week so this is fresh in my mind!)

Perhaps Winston Churchill / The Streets said it best: If you're going through Hell: Keep going!

Stick with it.

For sure, if there’s any doubt then stick with it. The only reason I’d keep it now would be to flip but I hate that with the Jimny and GRY market so wouldn’t like to do it to someone else.

I am not going to cancel, but I have raised a complaint.

Communication through the process has been poor - especially now there are rumours of more delays. Hopefully they can learn from this and improve in future.

Tbh I think unless there is another product that you will be just as happy/or happier with and can get now then stick with it. Cause I’m not sure, as much as every manufacture work promise, delivery dates are much better elsewhere.

Yes comms have been absolutely 🤬 awful, but I’m starting to learn that since covid customer service has gone out the window and the majority of large companies are the same.

I say all this, but I would really like to know what the delays are instead of a copy paste answer from a Twitter media team.

A car is typically your second biggest asset - I expect good service when spending £30k. Amazon can deliver me a bottle of Pepsi Max for less than £2 the same day and provide a better quality customer experience.

Given the low number of sales and what that actually add to the bottom line I suspect we are very much down the priority list.

Stick with it “GR86 Brothers“ , spent yesterday at SCITP Castle Howard , great day out and lots to look at but TBH there was nothing there I’d be wanting to spend money on other than the GR86. For me it’s “last chance saloon” for a “sports car”. 👍

Right then, I've slept on it (tried to during those spectacular storms last night).

My rather serious wobble is over.

I've come this far I'm not giving up. I am proud to be a member of Major @AndyRC 's Band of Brothers* and will continue to fight on!

My empathic, sensitive partner's 'helpful' contribution (direct, verbatim quote cited here with her express permission): "If you cancel the car you won't have anything to moan about - until you find something else to moan about". (!)

Summary: I am not cancelling my order and will take delivery of my GR86 if it's the very last thing I ever do.*

Bonne chance comrades!
