GR86 So what else could you buy new for the same money (a fun thread)?

Three door Fiesta ST3 MK8.5 if you can find a new one , around £28k and comes with a years free subscription to any Macadees car park after dark, joking aside they are a great little car, but are a bit “fidgety” 👍😎
I can't believe they sell for close to £30k and yet look to be a much wiser preposition than some other cars in this thread!

My MK8 ST3 is a lot of fun, I picked mine up at a year old for 20k and it came with the upgraded headlights, performance pack etc. I thought it was a lot of car at that price. Only problem is it eggs you on to take corners on three wheels!

How about one of these AFTER discount and before any options?

136bhp
1.4 engine
Most importantly it has that Mercedes badge and not some crappy Japanese brand.

Junior loves his Performance Edition , uses it daily , and has no plans to sell it at all, picked It up with 6k on it and now over 14k , it will be well used but well looked after. 👍

I was tempted by an orange performance edition but I needed a more door so had to leave it. The fiesta will probably go later this year in favour of an off roader sadly but the GR will more than make up for its loss!

Had I got a blue st edition I’d probably be doing a lot of man maths to justify three cars! 😂

Dan likes the Azure Blue on the Edition but loves his Performance Edition so he’s got exactly what he wants and it gets used daily, does 40+ on a steady commute , low 30s when his out having fun so very happy 👍 it’s a lot more fun than my Golf R was but no where near same level of overall performance, but 10/10 for fun factor

I bought a little i10 about 12 years ago when the scrap scheme was on for £4995…. My scrap car was dead. I had to tow it to the garage and they gave me £2k deposit for it 😂
Those were the days!

I know that some of us have found the GR86 ordering and subsequent communications processes challenging and frustrating at times.

Some of us have been complaining on this site, some of us have been grumbling about the complaining, and I’ve seen some objections about the grumbling about the complaining! I think all of this is perfectly understandable.

Inspired by @Sprotacus observations and reflections relating to a Honda Jazz for his mother-in-law (sounds like a fair swap etc. etc. #1970s humour) and the world of £26k+ Jazzes (Jazzies?), I’ve been pondering what new cars you can order now for the same money as the undoubted bargain the GR86 is.

I thought I’d start a thread where we could post some surprisingly mundane offerings, to remind us of perspective and context, and maybe cheer us up/help with the waiting!

DISCLAIMER: This is no way a criticism of these other products or (especially) those that choose them; more a consideration and underlining of the GR86’s bargain status. And no criticisms of mothers-in-law or indeed any other family members is implied!

So here’s what I found this morning: A VW Polo with a one-litre engine: £30, 013.

I’ve added a few options which I think is OK because the GR86 is very well equipped; I’ve even left off the £1,120 (!) fancy headlights cos that would have been an all-too-easy way to bump up the price.

I’d be interested to see what else is out there!

It really does put the asking price for a GR86 in perspective, especially the VW Polo 1.0 at £30k. That is an insane price for a Polo, as is the £26k price for the Jazz. These cars used to be entry level, run-of-the-mill, affordable small family or first new car type purchases and they now cost the same as a niche sports car. However, the difference is that the GR86 can still genuinely claim to be affordable at £30k when an entry level Cayman is circa £50k.

Also, as far as I can tell the GT86 cost £25k when it launched 10 years ago when I then had just bought a fully spec'd Skoda Yeti for £15k. An equivalent Skoda today would easily cost similar money to the GR86. So, the GR development team at Toyota have managed to deliver a much improved sports car in every conceivable way for very little extra cost to the consumer 10 years after the launch of the original car. That's impressive and all the more reason to cut them some slack as we wait on updates on our orders.

I strangely just got an email about the GR Yaris as I’m on the waiting list, why send out information for a car you can’t order 😂

I fully agree, very well put.

@Sprotacus - you mention the Yeti; how about a 1-litre version (with 110ps) of the Yeti replacement (the Karoq) for thirty-seven thousand pounds?

Wow! That is effectively the same spec of car as the Yeti I ordered and had to wait about 4 or 5 months for in 2011!! I ordered a 1.0 TSI Yeti SE with the option of a panoramic roof and it cost a shade over £15k. I think we negotiated almost £2k off the price with the dealer so lets call it £17k OTR. Give or take we are looking at double the price in 10 years.

I think we have established the fact that all things considered the GR86 is a bit of a bargain. When you also factor in that they will be depreciation resistant, have low running costs and have the potential of 10 years of warranty? That all starts to make an unsensible fun car purchase seem waaay too sensible!:ROFLMAO:

It really is incredible how cars have shot up in price over the last 10-15 years. I suppose one crude oversimplistic hypothesis is that PCP and lease deals have masked these increases for many people, who are happy with the £xxx per month and don't really care about overall price.

Your second paragraph, I'm printing off and leaving it where my other half will see it. I.e. nowhere near the washing up.

Prices certainly seem to have jumped quite a bit in the last 5 years at least since I bought a new car. My Focus RS was £28,940 base price in 2016 but that soon went up when a few options were added. Not that we have that luxury. (n)

I now see you can get a Nissan juke base price Tekna+ grade "from £28,420"

Actually @Sprotacus likely low running costs is a really positive factor. I was in a perpetual state of pleasant surprise at how little my GT86 cost to run. Great mpg, cheap service bills, and it never needed anything like tyres or brakes.

This (GR86) might be one of the most (only?) astute financial decisions I've ever made!
