I know that some of us have found the GR86 ordering and subsequent communications processes challenging and frustrating at times.

Some of us have been complaining on this site, some of us have been grumbling about the complaining, and I’ve seen some objections about the grumbling about the complaining! I think all of this is perfectly understandable.

Inspired by @Sprotacus observations and reflections relating to a Honda Jazz for his mother-in-law (sounds like a fair swap etc. etc. #1970s humour) and the world of £26k+ Jazzes (Jazzies?), I’ve been pondering what new cars you can order now for the same money as the undoubted bargain the GR86 is.

I thought I’d start a thread where we could post some surprisingly mundane offerings, to remind us of perspective and context, and maybe cheer us up/help with the waiting!

DISCLAIMER: This is no way a criticism of these other products or (especially) those that choose them; more a consideration and underlining of the GR86’s bargain status. And no criticisms of mothers-in-law or indeed any other family members is implied!

So here’s what I found this morning: A VW Polo with a one-litre engine: £30, 013.

I’ve added a few options which I think is OK because the GR86 is very well equipped; I’ve even left off the £1,120 (!) fancy headlights cos that would have been an all-too-easy way to bump up the price.

I’d be interested to see what else is out there!

An electric Peugeot 208, Vauxhall Mokka and Fiat 500e appear to sell for around £30k with a discount on autotrader lol

You could also get an Abarth 695, mx5, i20n, or Fiesta ST that wouldn't be so bad. I did consider the mx5 and the i20n, but not the other two.

And for me, I think the worst way to spend 30K would be on a 2wd SUV, from one of the less reliable brands. Jeep renegade, Renault Captur.....

A bit off topic but I don't think I would ever buy or consider any new car that is available for less than 30k. There just isn't any good offer atm.
However on the used market I was about to pull the plug on a used 19' m140i before Toyota released the Order dates.

Funny enough I have a Renault Captur since 2016 and it's been the most reliable car I've ever owned. Not great to drive but that's not why I have one. It does what it needs to do without fault.

I've owned several Renaults (and an Alpine if that counts) and they have all been great. The German cars I've owned though have all had issues without exception but their PR have nailed it with convincing people they are reliable.

30k is a tough price point brand new. Maybe a Fiesta ST or a MX5 - though the latter is difficult to get under 30k these days. Not many will cross shop these with a GT86 either! You can be on this thread still debating it in 3 years time if we're talking used - so many to choose from!

Continuing with the "mundane and surprisingly expensive" theme/same money as GR86, how about a one-litre Nissan Juke with a few styling bits for £30,040?

Crikey

These are all way too interesting and not welcome here! I want to see the dullest stuff you can possibly find! ;)

on the money on that one....used to work in a engine reconditioners....amazing at the amount of "well engineered" german engines that were fitted with cheap parts that broke

Wow, that's an expensive Juke.

Makes my wife's mini SUV look good value. A Puma ST which she got for a discounted £26,400 a year ago.

Think they're 32 now with no discount.

Prices for everything have gone up.

Pretty sure the price of the Toyota GR86 is due to the Japanese trade deal we made... we removed taxes/import charges for their motors top of my head. It makes the Jap cars crazily competitive.

And yeah our £31k cars (lets face it, they're £31k really, due to paint...) are a bargain. Even comes with the right tyres this time around :)

Personally I think the GR86 is a bargain. Car prices are crazy at the minute. Polos for £30k… Golf R for over £50k. £30k does not buy you much in today’s market.

However if I had that to spend in the second hand market I could see myself in one of these:

A few options I just couldn't bring myself to drop similar money on...

Citroën ë-Berlingo electric starts at £30995
Vauxhall Astra 1.2 Ultimate £31025
Caterham 170 with factory build and paint £28,850
Audi TT base model starts at £36,365!
Fiat 500 electric £31,485

This is my first brand new car tbf, and the first I've really seen the value in. With inflation running at what it is those having to wait a bit longer for delivery will end up with even more of a bargain as Toyota have said the price won't change!

Three door Fiesta ST3 MK8.5 if you can find a new one , around £28k and comes with a years free subscription to any Macadees car park after dark, joking aside they are a great little car, but are a bit “fidgety” 👍😎
