Hmm interesting - I think I am missing the point - hence this discussion.

So it's possible the PPF is healing from some of the chips - but we can't say this for sure. Deep chips seem to stay in PPF, scratches go.

No chips might = random luck rather than PPF?

Yeah, pretty much.

I see it like wearing shoes. Yes, if you stand on a nail, it will go through the shoe and in to your foot but it will help to stop day to day damage to your feet…. Weird analogy but you get the point.

Unfortunately, there isn’t anything you can do to keep the cars in pristine condition (aside from leaving it in an environmentally controlled garage) but there are things that can be done to help.
Some people see the benefits, some don’t care all that much and that’s also fine.

I’ve never PPFd a car, mostly due to the costs involved but I’m considering it with the GR.
I’m sure I’ll be happy just getting it detailed and ceramic coated etc but I also know it’s annoying when you see slight marring when it’s out in the sun.

Cheapest form of PP and absolutely free , is give the car in front plenty of space , not 100% effective but not too shabby 😉👍

It's not the car in front so much as the one doing 60mph going the other way on a single lane A road flicking up a stone.

There is the option of only changing the PPF on one panel if one was marked. It means not having to be concerned with respray colour matched.
I'm not sure how matched new Vs old PPF is though.

I changed my mind after seeing all the comments in US about how ridiculously thin the paint was and how susceptible it was to chip stones.

There were loads who regretted not applying PPF and a couple who were even considering respraying the front bumper and then applying PPF.

Never had PPF before, actually asked a dealer to remove a clear bra on a car once. But I think it has to be done this time.

Could you link some of these? Is it thinner than the GT?

Also thinking that the American winter is much harder than ours

Some of the others were in discussions on other threads etc. But the above gives you the general idea.

Thats pretty compelling, I think that cements it for me, ceramic coating and front end PPF. Might even chuck Dinitrol in for underneath too 😅

Ah! Good point! I've still got a load of Dinitrol I was gonna slap on the Focus but never got around to it. Probably knackered by now :ROFLMAO:
Think I've got some BH Dynax somewhere as well.

With what Is looking like a very spread out delivery calendar I’m sure those who take early delivery will give us some honest feedback on how the paint stands up to U.K. roads.

There is also an interesting thread on there about the lack of somewhere to stow your handgun , not something I hope will be an issue for any GR-Zoo member, apparently where to hide your iPhone is our biggest worry 👍

PS apparently you can’t mount an Assault Rifle in the back window either , like you would in a pickup 🤣

Massive deal breakers. Who wants my early bird electric blue manual? 😂

I found this nice little comparison video on YouTube that some might find useful. The guy sectioned off his bonnet, 1 quarter bare paint, 1 with ceramic coating, 1 with PPF and the other with ceramic coated PPF.

The PPF I've been looking at is https://www.xpel.com/ultimate-fusion-hydrophobic-paint-protection-film which according to the fitter has the ceramic coating layer built in (assuming it's the hydrophobic properties they talk about on the website).
My understanding is that the hydrophobic properties of the PPF wear off quite quickly and need to be maintained properly to last, but it's certainly not a bad idea to consider maintaining it yourself and saving on ceramic coating on the part covered by PPF if you can commit to the required maintenance.

I've always gone over my PPF with a finishing coat of Gtechniq C2v3 and that's always meant it continued to have some hydrophobic qualities. It also acts as a drying aid which is helpful.
it's probably my go-to bottle on my detailing shelves - love the stuff. I use it not only on the PPF bits, but the rest of the car too. It's good on glass too - but not the windscreen of course.

(rebranded as C2 now but still has a little v3 on the packaging)

Do you pay for ceramic coating over the PPF? I'm on the fence with it tbh, as I'll be able to polish up the swirl marks myself and have the time and space to apply less hard wearing protection like sealants or hybrid coating on my driveway (albeit no garage).
