GR Yaris (Gen 2) GR Yaris Mk2 (MY2024->)

Does anyone know why the noise is different in cold start in addition to the higher engine revs? In other cars I only noticed the high revs, but in the Yaris it almost seems like there is a valve open that makes it make noise... and with the modified exhaust it is more noticeable.... does it open the wastegate by any chance?!
You are absolutely correct ;)

From the service manual:

Wastegate Valve Control

During Engine Start

The ECM controls the vacuum regulating valve assembly to control the vacuum from the vacuum pump assembly to the actuator and open the wastegate valve. As a result, high temperature exhaust gases are supplied for the catalyst and warm-up time has been reduced.

It is definitly the most pronounced cold start I've ever had on a car, but I think this strategy is quite common on modern turbocharged cars.

My neighbours would agree!
My previous car a Mk3 Focus RS used to sound like a howling Vulcan bomber on cold start. Was a horrendous racket. The GR is quite tame in comparison but still quite loud with a sports cat.

From the service manual:
actually if you think about it it's a smart strategy... but for me it was new and I was wondering what it was... but where can I find the service manual? or do you mean the user manual?

User manual. The paper version is not as detailed. But can be found on your local Toyota website.

Brother owns i30n... our GRs are EVs compared to that ridiculous (but great) sound when he starts up. Everyone and their mother in our neighborhood knows that its him :D One of the few modern cars which sounds good even in stock, mainly with the flaps open.

for those who have the DAT8 gearbox: I notice that if I drive a bit and stop then put it in R, it is noisy and you feel the "thump" in the cabin and the sound seems like the gearbox support... instead if you continue to try D-R-D-R it doesn't do it... so I imagine it is for some reason... has anyone noticed? does changing the gearbox support with a more rigid one improve anything and that one gets worse or is it not worth replacing?

I notice slight thump but I assume it is by design. In general I try to be more gentle with it and give it some time while parking and shifting between D and R.

“light” unfortunately is a bit subjective, what do you hear exactly?! when you shift from D to R? do you also hear the noise in addition to the “thump”? I don’t understand why if I go for a few km in D and then shift into R it makes the noise, but if I test it while stationary, it’s all silent… what changes in the 2 moments? unfortunately to give it time, sometimes I just forget and sometimes I just don’t have time to wait because it’s a maneuver that has to be done quickly…. if you give it time when you stop do you hear the noise or not?

It's from the Service Manual section called "New Car Features". It might also be in the User Manual, but I don't recall for sure.
You can purchase a subscription to the Service Manual here: https://www.toyota-tech.eu

In terms of sound I would describe it as above mentioned “thump”, not an aggressive sound or sound I would describe as worrying (also I dont get any other accompanying sounds with it). For example my previous car, Opel Astra K, sometimes made a sound similar to torpedo landing a critical strike at a bow of a ship when shifting to R, compared to that this is completely calm sound. In terms of how often/if it happens after each few km drive I am not sure, I will check tomorrow. But once again in my case definitely it does not feel or sound like something violent is going on.

Update: classic commute (~30 minutes, last 3 minutes of more... lets say dynamic driving in sport mode), and had no thump 🤷‍♂️

In any particular mode?

In any particular mode?
Most of the time in normal mode (heavier traffic so no point of staying in sport), then for last few kms I have really fun (and most of the time empty) road section so I switched to sport mode and had proper fun. After that I stopped for picking up something for breakfast, this time I had no thump when arrived to parking lot and went into R.

Misha hustling a gen2 GRY around the Ring 🥵

In the intro he says the car comes with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s from the factory. I always thought they came on PS4s, but the one in the video is wearing Cup 2s 🤔

I just quickly watched and he mentions brakes from factory rather than tyres I think.

Hot hatch that’s too compliant gets criticised for being too wobbly. One that’s very firmly damped and hardcore gets criticised for being too harsh on the road. One that’s somewhere between and too competent like the GR Yaris gets called too boring. I bet the Toyota engineers despair 😂

Gotta have an opinion to get them views

I watched an old review the other day that was a vs review - the RS3 and the A45 - they said the GRY was lacking on a track - I'm assuming that's because it has an exceptionally good chassis that is matched to a superbly engineered engine and 4WD system, whereas the other two had rather wonderful engines attached to computers that controlled everything to help the drivers feel excited.
I think that is the thing these days with some car reviews - yes, all of these cars can excite a driver, but what is it about the experience? Is it through the driver's input that he is exciting the car and thus the driver, or is it the car just exciting the driver? I mused that with some modern cars a monkey might drive them and the car would do the exact same thing as if a car reviewer was behind the wheel.
