GR86 GR86 - What wheels and tyres are you thinking about?

I'm also on GR86.org, so I'll just paste my comment from there:

215 stock MP4 vs 225 MP4S I have no idea if it's being more gripper model, or wider tyre, but Michelin 215 is realitveily narrow, while 225 is bulky as hell. It almost feels like jumping to 235. From the looks perspective, they look more serious, raw, much better although it's only "a step up". Unfortunately you loss some of the precise and refinement with wider wheel. It's a trade off, slightly more grip vs less input feedback. They feel a little floaty when pushing hard in turns. 225 is the way to go for 8J, but you can run them on stock 7,5J. Just my feedback is that they are less balanced than stock width.

I do appreciate the positive factor, that they are audible less noisy, probably due to different compound being more soft. A nice bonus.

This was from original post.

After that I did more than 10k kms on these and can fully repeat myself.

Simple formula - 225 tyre goes to 8J, 245 on 9J and so on. The "middle" sizes such as 235, you guessed it, 8,5J.

More stretch = better precision.

It's floaty enough for me to reconsider going back to 215 or swapping the wheels to 8J...

Cheers, that's an interesting perspective. Wonder if you having a BRZ makes a difference, as I understand they have a slightly softer setup from factory. I might try 225s and see.

The difference is sublime for regular John
Regardless, my experience comes from car that had in that moment offset & camber Pedders top hats (580096 highly recommend) that gives -0.75 front camber per wheel + some caster and camber bolts. Additionally to that, was on progressive springs by RS-R - Sus down. Not so much of a stock setup.

Generally speaking, anything you do to this car, you can feel difference right away.

Woud replacing the 215s with 225s on the stock rims be considered a modification for insurance?

I believe so. With a financial implication that probably exceeds or matches any saving offered by the wider tyre.

Personally I just wouldn’t do it.

On a standard rim, unlikely.

Unless the tyre / wheel width combo is actually unsafe, or you’ve somehow managed to shoehorn 22x9”s with monster rubber into the arches you should be on safe ground.

A 225 on a standard 19x7.5J rim shouldn’t be a problem - not from any of the insurers I’ve dealt with.

Depends on the underwriter. I was charged £80 as it came under the 'Wider Wheels' mod. Others on here were able to add the 225s onto their OEM rims at no extra cost. I'll be taking it all into consideration when insurance renewal time comes. Worth noting that any deviation from the CoC should be declared, just to be safe - don't give them darned insurance companies the wriggle room when it comes to a claim ;)

Did you also declare when you had your OEM wheels recoloured? Not sure how strict and insurer would be about that. I may phone my next week and check as I don't think they charge for mods, they just note them down.

No. Wheel colour isn't stated on the CoC, just sizes. The colour of the wheels would likely not be a consideration by the claims assessor anyway, whereas the suitability of the wheels/tyres might be? Just conjecture of course, as I've yet to stoof the car and test my theories o_O

Welp, just to be on the safe side, I've just phoned my insurance (Chris Knott) and checked, and it seems they have the opposite opinion to your insurer. They said changing the tyre size wouldn't constitute a modification, only a change to the wheel itself...and that includes changing the colour!

No matter, they don't charge for declaring mods, so I've informed them it's booked for next week.

Bloody amazing innit! It’s no wonder you can’t take anything for granted when there’s no set ‘standard’ within the industry itself. 🤯

After getting initial customer orders out I grabbed some pictures of the 17” 5x100 wheels in stock.

Gloss white, gloss silver, gloss gunmetal, matte gunmetal.

Just in case anyone was shopping for tyres, Camskill still appears to be the place to go for supply only. Just ordered 4x Goodyear Eagle F1AS6 in 225/40/R18....£85.30 each including delivery.

That doesn't include fitting, but it's still cheaper than Blackcircles and ETyres if you just want the tyres.

Costco had blinding offer too but out of stock now. I would of posted it but even by the time I had seen it, already OOS...

£217 for 4 fitted!!!!

Wow, that is good! I'm not a Costo member unfortunately....and the nearest Costco is in Thurrock which is a complete PITA at the best of times.

But £34 for a year's membership might be worth considering if you are 'in the market' for some new tyres ... or 600 toilet rolls and 120 bags of crisps
