GR86 Vehicle Security

After a long slog trying to get this sorted, I'll be getting an alarm fitted with somebody else footing the bill! I won't go into too many details publicly to avoid falling foul of forum rules.

Originally I was going to get a Pandora alarm, however I've got some concerns about the parent company background and overall security for the app based features. I was originally looking at either the pandora Mini BT and Light Pro.

Does anybody have any recommendations for other options to consider?

I believe the Cobra 4615 alarm with ADR tags is a possible option for the GR86. I understand that Cobra are confident that this alarm can be coded to the car - but I don’t know if anyone has gone so far as to try and have one fitted yet. Just a question/thought: do the Pandora systems actually have an alarm…..or are they just immobilisers?

I'll take a look. Thanks.

They have alarm and immobiliser systems that are thatcham Cat 1 rated. The two I mentioned are listed here https://pandorainfo.co.uk/pages/immobiliser-with-alarm

I have one sitting here waiting to be fitted. I the weather is good, may give it a go at the Bank Hols. I spoke to Cobra Tech support before purchase and they said that the ECU for the GT86 and GR86 appear to have the same pin outs.

I had a place lined up to fit one of these and they were supper confident that it could be coded. But when I actually came to get it booked in, that confidence ebbed away a little, so I decided not to go ahead. I’d get them to do it if I knew for sure it could be coded 🙄.

I should have time next week to attempt the cobra install. Mine is supplied precoded by cobra for the GT86.

I'll have to dig out the details. Bought it ages ago. It's precoded for the GT86 but cobra checked the ECU pin outs on the GR86 and said they ook identical.

I’m not so certain that they can be identical? As the GT86 had a Thatcham Approved Cat 1 system, but our cars don’t. Would that be a factor in their thinking?
I know from having a third party immobiliser fitted to mine that the GR86 CanBus is minuscule and doesn’t offer much in the way of configuration for addons.
My hope would be that the core alarm elements from the US models are somehow still there, tucked away, just waiting to be plugged into something… 🤔

All the cobra needs is the canbus signal from the ECU to say the car is locked or unlocked. I think the cobra system offers nothing more than an alarm for break in. It doesn't offer immobilser function. All I want it for is interior protection, i.e. the alarm will sound if the car gets broken into. I'm relying on the factory cat2 for immobiliser duties.

I have had an update from the Omnbudsman who said Toyota offered 250 for me to fit an alarm. They said if I reject this offer then it will be moved to adjudication stage and a decision will be made in 90 days and whatever they decide will be final.

Tongue in cheek, my original request was for them to take the car back (as that was my original request to Toyota GB when they sent off that final email that the they would not fit an alarm, just 1 week after the 1 month deadline where I could return the car!!) Never really expected they would take the car back (which would be great given the choice on the 2nd hand market currently) so it's a question of whether I call it a win and close the case or gamble on the decision of the adjudicator as I have nothing to lose anyway. The amount they offered is probably not enough to fit an alarm and I doubt I'll bother to to fit an alarm anyway given it'll not be integrated with the rest of the system....

How much was that may I ask, and where did you get it from?
PF Jones Cobra A4615

PF jones is still the cheapest that I can find online. £168 delivered for the A4615 and 2 ADR tags.

I ordered the additional ADR tags, which means that even if they manage to open the car and drive off, say by keyless repeater, without the ADR tags in range, the Cobra Alarm will sound after 30secs. Won't stop them taking the car but at least will draw attention to it.

This site explains well what to expect from the A4615 Cobra:

Out of interest, was this the Motoring Ombudsman or the Financial Ombudsman ? I'm dealing with the former and am expecting a response from Toyota within the next week or so. I'm pressing for a lot more than £250

It was the MO. I lodged the case in November 2023 and it was in May 2024 that it was assigned and i was asked to submit evidence etc.
to be fair it all moved relatively quickly once it got assigned but I was also quick in giving them what I had.
