GR86 Winter Tyres & Wheels

Four CC2s being fitted at home on Friday. After playing with the pressures and going for a very spirited early AM drive yesterday, I convinced myself that four all-season tyres would be cheaper than pulling it out of a field one day. 😁
Have to say after a spirited drive yesterday in damp and greasy conditions the GR can certainly be playful. Only had one squeaky bum moment but this was controlled with the hedge avoidance system turned on 😳

I'm used to grippy Goodyear's on a Performance GTi that can literally cope with anything in any weather.

I am starting to retrain myself 😬

Did you go Baller, press the button and give it the beans though? I did, only once mind you. I thought the beans were coming back to speak to me! 😳

After my little field trip last weekend, I've been a bit more timid with the car in the wet, if I'm honest. Think I might have overestimated the tyres a little.
Also, this morning I noticed coming out of a damp junction, that the wheels span up a bit, but I didn't see the traction control light flash (although I do think it bogged down a little, can't be sure). Makes me think that perhaps the systems are a bit more relaxed than I thought.

Coming out of T-junctions in the damp/wet I often get the wheels slipping and the back end coming round requiring a "dab of oppo" and that's with everything switched on, it doesn't seem to take much to break the tyres grip in those conditions, dry roads are completely different and they stick a lot better then.

Do you see your TRC light flashing when you do so? I dind't this morning (althought the wheels only only span up for a couple of sends at most). I was abit paranoid that my stability/traction system wasn't working, although if not, I'd expect to see the engine managment light on.

I vaguely recall it flashing but I wasn't looking at it as I was looking where I was going. You could check it next time it is raining by trying it on some straight road and dumping the clutch in first to deliberately break traction.

Ditto. I was in fluid retention mode so looking ahead

I found I can get a little bit of slip before the light starts to flicker

Quick update on the winter tyres. I have gone with 225 Goodyear vector G3 4 season total for the four at Costco £297. Bit of a bargain on there current buy four get £80 off. Have to be fitted to loose wheels as they won’t fit non std size. Once I get a month of driving on them I will post an update if anyone is interested
ref the traction control light discussions the light will always come on when lighting up the tyres out of junctions. Best to turn everything off for the fully sideways junction exit experience. So they tell me. I would not of course indulge in such activities on the public highway.

That's a great deal, if not a steal, if you've got loose wheels 👍

Is that for the original wheels, 18’s?

After an interesting commute at less than 4deg air temp, and therefore near frost at 6am the other day, seriously considering four of these.
Well about 100 miles on these CC2's now, 225/40x18 on the original wheels, at 2.3 bar. Wow, what a difference this AM. They are more compliant, softer, quieter, grippier and with much less road noise. For our weather here this AM at about 6deg - spot on. 😁👍

Much more expensive when I look at them... I see the £80 off but were the tyres on offer too?

Hi Bluemanc i went into Costco Southampton and asked the price. They said they were £102 each but I would get a discount. I pointed out the offer put up on the counter front which if I recall was 80 off any two 18 inch Goodyears. He then did a new price and that was £297 fitted. Really good price. The next nearest price I had for the same tyres was Halfords mobile fit. £101 each.. I have done about 100 miles on them all in the wet and they are a big improvement in wet grip and traction noticeably more compliant over crap broken surfaces but sadly just as noisy. I have attached a photo of my receipt in case it can help you secure the same price

I’ll give it a go cheers 👍🏻🙏

Do you have to be a memeber of Costco to buy tyres there?
