GR86 Winter Tyres & Wheels

Well about 100 miles on these CC2's now, 225/40x18 on the original wheels, at 2.3 bar. Wow, what a difference this AM. They are more compliant, softer, quieter, grippier and with much less road noise. For our weather here this AM at about 6deg - spot on. 😁👍
And just applied for the £50 Michelin cash back today - my secret Christmas lunch out sorted 😁👍

Good man maths! Did you have any issues with the centre fitting a tyre size different to the OEM specification? By that I mean did you have to insist or were they compliant?

Told them - they are my tyres, fit them, and smile. Something like that. A raised eyebrow at most

I started out wanting some cheap winter wheels that I wouldn't mind getting battered, and I've ended with these which I prefer over the OEM ones. I'm pleased with the CC2s so far though.

Looks good - how do you find the driving characteristics? Do you have any overall pics of the car on the OZ 17”s

There's definitely a difference with the bigger sidewall for steering and ride quality, and they're not as grippy as the PS4s but they've not been too bad for some moderately spirited driving. I've not been pushing it too much since fitting them and I think every day I've driven has been damp, so it's hard to give a proper comparison.

Are you guys running stock wheel nuts with your winter wheels? Aside from being made of cheese, some GT86 folks seem to swap to aftermarket ones when using thinner wheels. I had planned to get a used set of Subaru steelies like this 205/60/R16 one for cheap snow driving but not sure if I need to budget for some longer nuts too.

Using the supplied wheels, just changed the tyres. The locking wheel nuts are like cheese and have been removed, the wheels nuts themselves seem okay, for now.

Having run full winters on my daily MX5's through previous winters I popped a set of CC2's on at the weekend as I travel a lot of untreated roads, mud is also a problem if you have to put a wheel on the verge to let a lorry, tractor through.
Stock wheels and standard size tyres 215/40/18, a couple of hundred miles in with driving adjusted to the tyre im on and I have to say Im very impressed with the CC2 and I have confidence in its abilities (more than mine!!) to get me and Bert through to March and back on an appropriate tyre for the season.

Also bought a pair of old BRZ winter tires 17" with old Kumhos i'zen kw31's for 150£ so I'll be using up the old tires before buying something newer. Overall the tires work well and the car is great in the snow as long as you are really gentle on the throttle... Great to slide when your not. I think the rims look pretty good even though maybe I should change the "Subaru" center caps, but they are not to far from the truth... :ROFLMAO:

Hi All
Thought I would give quick update on my winter tyres now I have had month on them. In case anyone is interested. They are Goodyear vector 4 season in 225 on standard rims . I am running them at 34PSI
I chose them over alternatives like the cross climates as they come out ahead on wet and dry handling but behind on snow.

Noticeably more compliant over broken surfaces some reduction in initial turn though. Grip level in warm and dry are noticeably less than the Ps4s. When they breakaway it’s probably more progressive. In the wet it far less skittish and despite daily use I have not had any of the unexpected slides that were a daily occurrence last winter. Give you a lot more confidence is wet conditions.

In the recent sub zero weather they are night and day better you can cover ground a lot quicker than on the PS4s. Off the line it’s much easier to break traction than on PS4s. The difference being you don’t have to back off to end the spinning they soon hook up. In addition I noticed that when you spin up on pull away the car slews Side ways every time all very manageable. Doesn’t happen on the PS4s
Playing on roundabouts if you build up the cornering force rather than throw it in you can feel movement in the rear tyres either from softer sidewalls or the tread blocks not sure but feels like tread blocks. If you chuck it in it breaks away very easily and is very managable. All of course according to friend with an identical set up. Overall I am loving them. Don’t think I would want to run them in the summer when you can really push the car in hot weather you would be missing something feel wise. But if you daily the car they are very worthwhile over the winter. Any one got any thoughts on the pressures I am running not sure if I should try a few more PSI
Nearly forgot to add sadly no quieter than the PS4s.
Hopefully some one will find this of use

Great read thanks! I'm having a set of those fitted tomorrow morning at my local ATS (via Blackcircles). I too chose them instead of the Kinergy & CC2, no doubt for the same reasons that you did - because the tyre review channel on youtube had them ahead in wet weather and aquaplaning resistance. I've also chosen the 225 size over the OEM 215 size (and paid additional insurance for having wider tyres) but mainly for improved stability and reduced turn-in. I had read somewhere that they should be run at 36psi, so I'm gonna try that and get a feel. If they're too bouncy I'll drop to 35. Certainly looking forward to putting the PS4 into hibernation and gaining some reassurance from having these on whilst it's so cold and wet.

Hi Sonic

Thanks for the tip regarding the pressures I will give it a try. The tyres do get noisy if you lap a roundabout sideway so my friend says. Usually that can be. Sign of too low a pressure. I am sure you will love them.
Do you think I need to inform the insurance about the wider tyres seems trivial change

It is a minor change but, it’s a deviation from the original design and certified OEM specifications. The insurer could invalidate your insurance in the event of an accident. I informed mine and it cost me an extra £80 for ‘wider tyres’ as a modification, adding it alongside my cosmetic exhaust and 2ch Dashcams. Sometimes it’s better to be safe than sorry; a few quid to change a policy vs a £32k write off? Comes down to Risk Aversion and Likelihood - in the end it’s up to you 😉

Thanks Sonic I wil have to give the insurance some thought. My thoughts were that it such a small size difference and perfec fit on the stock wheels that there not an issue. I believe the 225 were fitted on that ltd edition version abroad as well or did I imagine that

Sizes are stated on the 'Certificate of Conformity' - any variation should be declared to insurers as your vehicle is no longer standard and is 'outside' its envelope as specified by the manufacturer, and duly accepted by the automotive governing bodies for the specified country. Your CoC should be in the wallet with your user manual.
