GR86 What watch to match GR86?

I tend to agree that Seiko makes a good fit for the GR86 - affordable, well engineered, robust, and without particular pretension.

I have several Seikos, but today's is a recent addition. After combing their range for a type of watch I thought ought to exist, I discovered it didn't, and so I had it built.

It's based on a 5 Sports with a fixed bezel, fitted with a GMT movement and garnished with some dive watch bits. I rather like it.

It isn't red, but hey, you can't have everything. I do have a red Christopher Ward Trident kicking around somewhere that would fit that part of the bill, though . . .

Of the other watches presented in this thread, I particularly appreciate the Grand Seiko and Tony The Tiger 😀

Where did you get that built? I really like that.

I have Seikos predominately, I always thought I was an oddball for that, I'm clearly in good company!

Tempus Watch Mods built it for me - a quick Google search ought to throw up their website and Instagram account. Be warned, though - learning that you can have a watch custom-made to your specifications can be quite dangerous for your wallet . . .

I suspect that if this was a Porsche or a Ferrari forum a "show us your watch" thread might as well just be titled "show us your Rolex", but I'm glad there's room for some variability!

Anything titanium is super cool, but I haven't found quite the right style for me in that material yet

Ahhh, but being a money savvy GR owners forum we can just reply “sure, which ones do you want to see first?” 😉
That said, I think my favourite and most worn watch amongst my collection is a (now discontinued) NITE Icon T100 GTLS. It’s super easy to read and so bright at night time that it would stop me getting to sleep. It’s also the watch I wore to recover over 8,300 lives at sea during a year in the Med’, so it evokes some stark memories each time I wear it nowadays.

Was thinking of going to this but a bit far away unfortunately despite a few friends going.

Oooh I have a Christopher Ward! Can I join in?

Oooh - C60 Elite?

A very nice thing, but sadly not made in a size that would fit me. The Trident range used to be available in three sizes, but it seems they've cut that right back now :(

My Christopher Ward is a Mk2 Trident - I actually ordered and took delivery of a Mk3 Trident Pro in 38mm later on as well, but a combination of uncertainty about the shape of the hour hand and the financial impact of a leaking head gasket resulted in it being sent back for a refund.

Christopher Ward combined flat blue and orange to great effect on the Mk3 Trident GMT, and the C65 Dune GMT absolutely fired some neurons on the subject of a GMT watch with the 24-hour scale on the rehaut rather than on an external bezel. Now I think of it, my GMT probably owes as much to Christopher Ward as it does to Seiko!

I don't have a watch collection and never wear one nowadays but should I do so in the GR, I would choose the first proper one I bought back in the late 80's which is this.

Back then I wore it all day everyday even when gardening and washing up. Consequently it got scratched and the glass let in water - it was in a bit of a state.

A few years ago I managed to obtain a wonderful replacement which is the example in the photo. It is very small in comparison to modern day watches but I love it.

It reminds me of being in my MK1 MR2 company car all those years ago ☺️

Yup, Elite 1000 I think. Girlfriend bought it for me as a present. I like a nice watch but I baulk at spending thousands on one, as I'd just never wear it. The CW isn't so expensive that I'm too scared to wear it daily. Usually wear it with the blue and orange soft strap, but I've also got a titanium bracelet for it when wearing it out somewhere posh.

I'll add some of my old CW's to the watch thread and not the GR86 watch thread!

I didn't go into things too deep. Just got a similar blue to my car. I'm the only one who will ever notice 😁.

Just picked up one of these:

It's not the classic 91W, but that, like an MX5, will always be available to pick up another time. This one is slightly better, yet like the GR86, won't be around for long. If I like it, I may pick up a couple more :p
