GR86 What did you do with your GR86 today

I also think it's helped with the jerky acceleration when accelerating hard in lower gears; it's not eliminated it, but it certainly feels more secure and less "kangaroo" when you don't get it quite right. And the throttle feels a little less elastic when you make quick movements on the pedal. So I definitely think that the amount of slop and movement in the driveline is contributing to that. I reckon STI engine mounts would improve it further; and although I did those on the old car too, I was able to do it without removing the Ace manifold I had, whereas I believe the OEM manifold needs to come off for engine mount replacement. Don't think I'll bother.

Any increase in NVH? The transmission in this car is so much quieter than the last one.

So far, I haven't detected any. I thought maybe I heard a bit more gear noise when I took it out yesterday and accelerated, but I was specifically listening for it, so it might have been in my head. Today though, although I've only driven it a short distance, it doesn't sound any different.

That's one of the reasons I opted to replace the whole mount, rather than just the cheaper poly inserts. I tried one of those on my old car (a Superpro one), it made the shifting feel great, but it introduced a fair bit of gear whine when accelerating in lower gears . At first it was quite amusing in a "lol, racecar" kind of way, and I know most people found it perfectly liveable. But I took it out after a week, bit much for me. The STI mount is constructed from rubber...just more of it, so it doesn't flex around as much.

They've arrived but not had chance to fit yet. Quality seems fine for the price. There are a couple of videos on YouTube and the Stickerfab site that show how to install that give a good idea of what they are like.
Ah excellent - thanks for getting back to me, let me know how you get on with the install (y)

Did you end up having to fork out £30 odd for delivery or did they manage to get the cost down a bit?

I did fork out 30 for delivery, but I didn't try and negotiate

Done two things this evening, gearbox related:
- Changed the gearbox oil to Millers. Really improved the gear shift on the old car. New car has a much better shift anyway, but I figured that as I had a bit of the Millers left over, I'd swap it out for the good stuff. Easy job with the car in the air.
- Replaced the transmission mount with the stiffer STI mount. A mod I did with my old car, and I recently found out the part numbers were the same, so ordered one for this car too. Installation would be straightforward, but the front pipe makes getting to two of the bolts an absolute ball ache. Really I should have dropped the front pipe, but that's a bit of a job in itself , I was running out of light, and I'm stubborn - didn't want to abandon it, and have to come back and jack the car up again another day when I already had it up on stands. In the end I managed to just unbolt the front pipe from the mid pipe, slip the bolt out of it's mounting hook, and that allowed just enough movement to get the transmission mount done....but it was an absolute chore. Had to refit the bolts blind, using the tips of my fingers and only being able to tighten them a few degrees at a time. Much swearing was had.

Took it for a drive straight away and the result is noticeable. I guess it's a combination of both the better oil and stiffer mount, but it's taken an already good shift feel and made it sublime. Shifts are smoother and feel tighter; it's hard to explain, but because the transmission is mounted more firmly, it feels like when I push the stick into a gear, there's less energy being wasted pushing the whole transmission around, and it's all being directed to pushing the gear into position....it's a bit less rubbery feeling. It almost feels like the shift feels physically shorter. At the same time, the shift feels very smooth, which I guess is the better gear oil. The car was stone cold when I drove it; it hadn't been driven at all today except a couple of minutes before and after jacking it up to do the work. But it felt as if it was fully warmed up as soon as I took it for a drive, and dropping down into second was much improved. The real test will be when the weather gets properly cold though.

I also think it's helped with the jerky acceleration when accelerating hard in lower gears; it's not eliminated it, but it certainly feels more secure and less "kangaroo" when you don't get it quite right. On the whole, very pleased. I won't say it's a night and day difference, as I think the shift on the newer model is already an improvement over the older car anyway. And the part was £130 ordered from Nengun.com, so it took a couple of weeks to arrive from Japan (Fensport also sell it for ~£160, but I was willing to wait and save 30 quid). There are cheaper options such as the Whiteline positive shift kit, a poly insert which is placed in the void of the mount bushing. It was a popular mod for the old car; given the transmission mount is the same in the GR86, then one of those would also fit it. But they come with their own compromises. If anyone's interested, I might make a dedicated thread with more detail about the change, but I'll drive it for a few days first to really get the measure of it.

I was intending to give more of the underside a going over with some ACF50 while the car was up on stands. Unfortunately I ran out of daylight, so that will have to wait.
Is it these?

Yup.... ST41020AS000. Cost me £129 including shipping. Didn't have to pay any import taxes.
Also available at Fensport if you want it quicker - TRD branded there, but as far as I can tell, exactly the same part: https://www.fensport.co.uk/collecti...n/products/trd-uprated-gearbox-mount-gt86-brz

It's listed as a GT86 part, but it was thanks to a post on the US forum that someone confirmed it fits the GR86 as well:

I love the fact that you can work on these cars yourself and tweak them.. I’m a time served mechanic but I’ve been off the tools for a long time.. I’m looking forward to getting stuck into lolly stick adjustments for the gear selector and clutch spring changes.. it’ll take me right back đŸ˜¬

Yeah, I like tinkering and finding little things to tweak and refine.

The GR86 engine mounts are already improved over the GT , but that was for NVH more than anything else: "To combat noise and vibration, GR86 has new aluminium engine mount bracket and the damping characteristics of the liquid-filled mounts have been optimised,"
I would say the rubbery drive train issue is better in the GR than GT, but due to what change - I don't know.

That's interesting. To be fair, the only reason I changed the engine mounts on the GT was to combat another issue; I had an Ace manifold and the clearance was so tight that when the engine moved under acceleration, it would sometimes strike the metal undertray giving a nasty rattle. When I saw a video showing how much the engine flopped around on the stock mounts, it was no surprise. The improvement in throttle response was a side effect.

I had a great drive back after a meal out with a mate last night. c.11pm, very quiet rural B/minor roads, light scattering of drizzle.

It was one of those drives where everything came together and I was totally focussed on the experience. No music/radio, no passengers, and no distractions. Not going massively fast but the car felt so 'alive'. Steering, throttle, gearchanges, braking all fantastic.

I love this car very much indeed. There is no other new car available for anything like £30k (£32.5k now?) that would touch it for driving pleasure. Tell me I'm wrong.

I picked up a slow puncture at some point this week. Two weeks and 300 miles into ownership. Not particularly thrilled.

Hoping I can get it repaired rather than replaced. Anyone have experience with puncture repairs?

Yep - had a front repaired at 130 miles - had concerns that they wouldn't repair it as it was about 1.5cm in from the edge, but as it was small (forget the size - sorry), they were able to repair it - kept pressure since, so happy - cost £25

I'm experiencing pretty much exactly the same thing. We live next to a farm and opposite a farm and next to another farm on the other side with fields all around. It's lovely but my God the flies. I'm looking out of my window now at mine (also silver) and can count between 30-40 of the little buggers on the roof.

In terms of cleaning, I've found my go-to Autoglym SRP fetches the muck off very quickly, and regular application of Autoglym EGP helps make cleaning easier with just a little additional pressure with a wash mitt when shampooing.

Thanks - I’ll give that a try. I can sympathise with the picture- bloody flies!!!

Get in touch with your local Toyota Dealership. I had a slow puncture too, they repair them for free.
Dealership was Toyota Vantage, Wakefield.

I know there used to be an offer for free puncture repairs at Toyota centres. If the hole is too close to edge of tread to prevent patch fitting flat to inside of tyre or side cannot be safely repaired
see here

Often tyres are run low when they get puncture and overheats tyre and you will see loads of Black rubber dust on inside when removed or the side wall outer will appear worn which means tyre replacement
