GR86 What did you do with your GR86 today

If anyone needs 'crap' from a wheel barrow, I have about 4 tonne of horse dung that needs shifting - it's great for veggie growers and FOC as I have an endless supply thanks to our 3 beasts of burden. 😆:poop:
That would be a bit of change from the usual ‘just popping out for a pint of milk and a newspaper’

I have an XC70 and a trailor for such weekend duties!

Yesterday I took it to Aberystwyth and back to see family. Actually hadn't driven it since the last wash because of other reasons. Because of the time away it took me a while to synchronise with it. Lot of traffic on the way up so wasn't ideal but was doing 32mpg. Coming home I popped in to see a friend and when I left it was late evening, roads dead, all the roads I used to live on 5 years ago and know every inch. Barely saw a car all the way back to Carmarthen and what I did see, seemed to be almost perfectly timed for overtakes as if it was destined to be with no loss of momentum. I love this thing I really do. To get the most out of it, it has to be daily driven so you're completely in sync with it. Few days off or in my case almost 3 weeks is enough to have to dial in again. You have to drive it how it wants to be and once they tyres were warmed up, even with the odd damp section was totally confidence inspiring. Paradoxically it feels fast at slower speeds because you're lower but some sections I was going through very quickly, on par when I was at my best in the vRS in it's prime, yet felt great. It's a very impressive car and so stable too, even on undulating Welsh roads.

I actually got around to disabling the ‘active sound’ today. Looked like an easy job, just remove the side panel from the passenger side of the dashboard, and unplug the cable. I’ve not got the largest hands in the world, but there’s no way I’d fit one far enough through the gap that’s exposed to do that, so I had to remove the glovebox as well. Thankfully that’s a very straight forward job once I found this:

I’ve not really had a chance to try the car out much since, but initial impressions are good. With the standard exhaust I was happy enough with the fake sounds, as the standard exhaust is so quiet, but with the Milltek I just don’t think it’s needed. I can always plug it back in again, but don’t think I will, I’ll give it a few weeks and see.

Couple of observations from me Martyn:

1. Interesting point re. the dialling back in to the car when you've not driven it for a while. Due to my being home-based for work and using the train (and having another car in the household), I can easily go two or three weeks without driving mine, and I experience something different, but not unrelated I think. I find that, even after a period without driving it, I can get back in and feel at one with it straight away. However, if I'm driving it frequently (say 2x per week or more), all the other cars I drive feel completely different, and let's be honest - quite terrible. Even if they are supposedly decent drivers' cars. So my GR86 has completely spoiled other cars for me, and I have to dial back in to non-GR86s, if that makes sense!

2. Just a general comment that I really enjoying your observations and thoughts about the car.

At the moment I'm driving Dad's Swift as a daily running errands for him. Being 15yrs old has it's issues and only has 101bhp. I like it in it's own way but it's no 86. Nothing is really and is driven in a completely different way. Once you tune into that then you can surprise people too but takes a great deal of effort. Plus in the gap I was still getting over a left foot injury which is still only 95% now. Think if I'd not driven anything else in the gap and say only ridden the bike I'd have been fine. But it's readjusting to the immediacy of the steering and you have to steer it and purposely place it where you want it. Power has to be fed in correctly at least when tyres are cold or it's wet but once it's warm it's really good. The power is ideal and I never feel I need more.

Not really myself, but I could do some harm to some fox’s who did this 😅

After doing my track day, I'm finding I've a bit more confidence in it's ability. Not to say I'm going mad and driving like a hooligan, but it's easier to "lean" on it a bit more than I have before.

Mine only gets driven 1 week in 3 ish so need to bed myself in again when it's his week. It's hard after driving the focus as that's a bloody animal everywhere 🙈

I need to get a track day in for this reason. I don't hold back and have been building up to the limits sensibly but a track day puts a marker down for where limits really are. Takes any guessing out of it.

I made an expensive mistake. Basically, I underestimated how close to the wall I was when parking in my garage… caught on rubber seal of the garage door. £200 later it’s good as new (no paint damage, only residue removal and paint correction)

My garage is so full of ‘horsey’ stuff that I’ve never been able to fit a car in it! I’ve always used an ‘Ultimate Outdoor Car Cover’ (from classic additions). Expensive but worth it, especially with the harsh Winters we can get in Scotland. No chance of hitting a wall and it keeps the car pristine during its hibernation 🥶

How long does that take to put on and take off?

Not long. Maybe five minutes? That said, it's a bit of a practised art to cover a clean Ceramic Coated Car as it can easily slide off if the weight is unbalanced. I tend to place it in the centre of the roof and unfold it (like cake in a napkin) so that it hangs equally over each side, then I can get the elasticated front and rear in place, doing the sides and then securing it with the nylon clips underneath.
Here is the one I used on my KonaN. As well as using it in the Winter I also used it before attending Car Shows, to stop bird poop/pollen/tree sap from affecting the coatings after hours of hard work detailing. You can probably see that I've also used some cheap wheel covers to stop the tyre shine from staining the material inside. Nylon straps secure it underneath at the front, centre and rear.
In fact, given the hours of cleaning that I gave it and the very few miles that I drove, my KonaN used to spend the majority of its time parked up under this cover, only coming out when I went for the odd weekend spin around Fife. Hence why I've already bought another ready for when the GR86 arrives and is home fresh from its professional detail and PPF.

Not used their outdoor covers, but another thumbs up for classic additions. Every new purchase gets one of their “super soft stretch indoor car covers”. For the price, they are really quite good, especially when compared to manufacturers covers that tend to be twice the price and no different.
