GR86 What did you do with your GR86 today

Succumbed to the pressure from my inner monologue and bought the whole Fix8 car care detailing bucket set. I used code ‘TCB10’ from The Car Boutique latest YouTube video, so along with their current sale price I got the 3 bucket set with guards and magnets, for £85:50, making them £28:50 each which isn’t far off the cost of most branded buckets nowadays anyway. That’ll do pig 🐽

Tried to get ahead and book it in for first MOT and service. Books aren't open for November yet. Told them I'd supply my own oil and filter like last year and they said if I do that and I get a warranty claim then Toyota won't honour it, which is a change from the last 3 changes. Bit of a joke really. The filter is identical to the one on the car from new and the oil meets the spec. Not sure what I'll do now. Pay the extra for their oil and filter or decide to get it done at another Toyota garage.

I think you’ve nailed it there, and it was a no for me - the GRY wasn’t as much fun as the 86, so I didn’t pursue a deal any further.
I’m 100% certain that for a lot (most?) of folk the Yaris is the car they’d go for. It’s a really gutsy engine with all the torque and the cornering is 4wd-rally-tastic. It has a slightly menacing presence, which is cool. But from my hour long drive and going by the stuff that I measure cars by, whilst it is seriously accomplished and it is fun, it’s ONLY when you’re pressing on. And even then it’s a sort of ‘how the hell did the car manage to get me round that corner with so little drama’ kind of amusement.
It’s that ‘horse and rider’ thing that Mazda said about the OG mx5. That applies to so few cars - in spades to the 86, but not so much to the Yaris in my view.
And I’ve totally gone off turbo power delivery - N/A all the way. Hate even a smidge of lag
I seem to be in the minority here. Please bear in mind I’ve owned many Japanese cars - most of the rally heroes etc and most Honda Type Rs (not NSX). Finally getting hold of a GRY from a scalper in 2021 was all a big disappointment for me. Firstly, I don’t like the look of them. Far too much granny shopper to see the rally vibe. Just odd, from every angle. Then there was the power delivery. Good from the off but all over in seconds (think original N55 M2). I just didn’t get it at any level and sold up a year later, to Toyota, for more than new list price. Madness. Had I had not have had every generation of Celica GT-Four, Scooby, Evo (pushing 400+) I may have been wowed. But I wasn’t.

The GR86, whilst woefully underpowered compared to all the above just has “it”. I love the look of it. Love the way you have to wring its neck to even get going. Love the exclusivity. Love the total lack of annoying nannies. It just seems to have nothing and everything all at once. Again, I just don’t get it, only this time, in a good way.

What I don't get is: do people really think this?
I know that, in current times, it's not a fast car, but I've driven a lot of properly slow cars (I learned to drive with 32bhp) and I wouldn't regard the 86 as one of them.
I know, to some degree, it depends on what you're used to, but I've seen it described as 'dangerously slow'... really?

Nah not me. But I have not been spoiled by fast turbo diesels or modern petrol turbo cars or EVs.
There are way faster cars out there to 60, but saying the GR86 is dangerously slow is something that would not cross my mind.

Still annoyed about the servicing and how they won't let me us my oil again. Or genuine filter that they had to last time since they yet again couldn't get stock. Funny that. It's left quite an annoying feeling I can't shake. It's not the money but the principle. They said it was fine before but not now. Gone through all the emotions of going to another dealer (Macclesfield is 4hrs away) but I'll probably bite the bullet and doing oil only as per service then going to an Indy like Fensport going forward. At least they'll fit other things too. Once the car is mine, warranty will be in the bin anyway.

Did even think to sell and move on, try something else. Some tried saying it's like asking a restaurant to cook food you bring but that's a false comparison. A restaurant says what they sell. If you don't like it you don't buy it. If they'd said the first time it's their oil only then I'd have accepted it but to say yes, then no irks me. Dealers have always been hard work. Think the day I'm shot of them the better. Puts me off ever owning a new car again.

Only done 1800 miles since the last service too. Although I have lots planned this Summer for drives.

@KobayashiMaru86 I'd be looking at it in 2 ways.

Disregard what they’ve told you and have them service the car the way you asked. Your warranty is with Toyota GB, not the dealer, since you are using genuine parts and the oil meets or exceeds the specification set by Toyota then your warranty will be upheld. Given the inconsistency and lack of competency we’ve seen through the dealer network I wouldn’t really listen to them. Chances are even if you have to make a warranty claim they won’t remember who you are, your car, and what oil has gone it, they will just see the book has been stamped.

Other option is just to go to an independent, this will likely reduce both your stress levels and the cost of the service.

Now I've calmed a bit I'm thinking the same way. Oil and filters are the ones we all order, all meeting the spec etc. I won't get them to do gearbox and diff oils. I'll go to an indy for that. It was more they were stressing the point that the extended warranty only counts if it's all their parts and that's the irk of it and where they make the money. Have to if cars are being sold online now. My 3yrs ends December.

It's just really annoyed me that's all. It's put me off ever getting a new Toyota again. Unless we do get that GR Corolla and it's reasonable but it's unlikely. Dealers no matter the manufacturer are crap in some ways and are so hit and miss, even in the bike world too. I did think is it me being too picky but it's my car. I don't trade stuff in when deals end.

As a private buyer, "full dealer service history" wouldn't mean anything to me. Most of them employ a load of cowboy mechanics who can't uphold a reputation good enough to maintain a solid independent customer base. I haven't, and won't ever be getting my 86 serviced at a toyota dealership.

After this I won't be. It was only to cover any niggles under warranty. The two I've had so far they couldn't solve, which says it all really. MOT is same time so anything not wear related should be covered, not that I'm expecting anything.

I suppose much depends on how one values the Toyota warranty that comes with the approved servicing from year 3. Personally I’d want to maintain that.

After a few days heavy use I washed my car yesterday evening. Took ages. Baked on dust and flies. Looks decent now though. Might take an underwhelming pic for this month's photo thread.
