Not really coming from anything here - I sold my daily commuting Fiesta last summer as we hadn't really used it what with working from home and other things since November 2020. The 308 SW dog-waggon and Focus RS were plenty for chores and fun.

But as we're going back to commuting soon as we go back the the office I fancied something fun. And as we're within a stones throw of a couple of good track day locations (Mallory and Donington Park) we've talked about having a track day car for ages. Been looking at NC3s for a bit but ended up having a "what the heck" moment and plumping for the GR86. Nearly bought a GT86 when I bought the Fiesta but the economical maths didn't add up. Now live closer to work and share costs now so it's not the issue.

I expected and predicted pretty what came out, overall- cars to be of a similar size and 'feel'
Just going by the types of people I see and talked to who have '86s. Typically the same types of drivers/age range I see driving the same size cars.
Just as I didn't think anyone would come from, say, a T-Roc R to a GR86. As (typcially) T-Roc R owners (the few I've had a convo with in car parks) don't seem like Fiesta ST-type owners + 10 years older in age

It's funny when people say stereotypes don't exit anymore :)

I did think there would be more GT86 owners though, not ones new to the 'marque'. Maybe many GT86 owners don't like so much as to start the ride afresh again?

Driver focused car gets purchased by people who are interested in driver focused cars. Incredibly incisive analysis there.

Up next: Water is wet. Would love to see what other 'stereotypes' that this line of thinking has validated though. Or on second thought, I probably definitely wouldn't...

I will be coming from a Mk3 Focus RS, I am still undecided whether to trade in, or just keep hold of the Focus RS as a weekend toy and have the GR86 as a daily car.

The GR86 is going to be my second car, something fun for the weekend.

I had an Octavia VRS 230 as my weekend car which I loved but I was given an offer I couldn’t refuse (£6k over what I paid for it from a dealer) so I took it and bought a cheap Audi A4 while I decided what I really wanted.

Was leaning towards a GR Yaris but couldn’t justify the inflated used prices, would love a Supra but didn’t want auto so the GR86 ticks all my boxes for an affordable fun weekend car.

Although a manual supra sounds fun 🤔

I have a nice old 325ti in the garage and often wonder what I’d replace it with (RWD, reasonably light, manual, NA, pref 2+2) - tried a GT86 years ago at Silverstone and enjoyed it but performance wise it’s probably only a sideways step at best.

Had also thought of forgoing rear seats and going for a Cayman 2.7/ 2.9 but it would be a shame for my children not to be able to come along for the ride.

GR86 appeared on my radar with all the good reviews and I thought it could be a chance to tick those boxes in my first ever new car before it’s too late!

Coming from a Hyundai i20N which will certainly do till the GR comes! It's a fun little car, but I prefer a sportscar for aesthetics. Rear wheel drive... and just general "feeling special" intangible quality about the GR86 and previously the GT86!

(I've also owned 3 GT86s)

I absolutely love the i20N. Not seen one in the flesh but read lots of positive reviews on them. Was a potential purchase until I decided on the GR86.

Also seen a few second hand over the £30k mark so definitely not losing money on one of those.

Tbh mine is on 3k miles. I think they're trading around £24-26k mark. So probably around £22-23k on P/X / Dealer purchase. Time will tell!

Fingers crossed they stay strong. Second hand market is very hard at the moment, be surprised if you lose much, if anything. Long gone are the days where you lose 20% just by taking delivery.

However, if the i20N does start dropping I may have to make room for a third car 😂

I will lose cash on this... but not unexpected. I actually bought it at a premium. I paid £25.5k for it... about £1k above new car deals from maindealer because I didn't want to wait... Fun story. My original order that I ordered in August 2021, still hasn't arrived at my dealer...

Side note, DO NOT deal with Cars2 - Barnsley or anywhere else for that matter. Truly one of the worst experiences of my life.

What colour did you go for? I love the ‘N’ blue with the black roof.

👍🏻

Awesome, think I’ll have one of these one day.

The ‘GR’ and ‘N’ cars appeal to me more than anything else on the market. Was looking at the Kona N too, that looks mental.

Updated it with a picture for your fun :p

Yeah this i20N feels like a go kart. It feels good but I dunno never been hatchback fan. They're just a bit ubiquitous and boring as a result... Looking forward to a rear wheel drive, naturally aspirated car tbh.

Biggest problem imo with the i20 is the turbo it'#s a love hate relationship... when it kicks in wow. But you're often waiting for boost. That combined with the rev hang (euro emissions bullshit, in all new cars including our GRs) makes it less fun... but overall it's easily a good 8/10 car. Hoping the GR will be a 9/10 or even maybe a 10/10 driving experience with a few mods!

Interesting to see that 75% of new Gr86 owners never bought a Gt86. Having bought 2 brand new Gt86 myself and then having a deposit at a dealer for a Gr86 and not being able to buy one online makes me fairly disappointed to say the least. Toyota UK showed absolute zero loyalty to previous buyers by not offering people like me a first opportunity to buy before they offered them to everybody else. Before somebody asks why I couldn't buy one online, my useless dealer never sent me the proper link. Toyota never sent me the link either even though I had registered for information. Had it not been for previous buyers like me that supported the original car Toyota may never have brought the Gr86 to the UK. Although considering the piddling amount they've allocated they might as well have not bothered. Still probably be able to buy one come October/ November for around £5k more than the RRP.

Toyota done it fairly as in he who was fastest got an allocation and the vast majority of active posters on here got one so it shows that at least a lot of enthusiasts got one rather than flippers. I’m glad it’s not like Porsche where purchase history comes first, what if all 6k plus original GT86 buyers had wanted one?

I can understand your disappointment though as the launch was a bit bobbins and I reckon anyone that wasn’t keeping track on here was at a disadvantage.

Whilst I appreciate your frustration, if Toyota went down that route, it wouldn’t have been fair. Giving everyone the same opportunities to purchase the car, like they did, was the fairest option.
Was it well publicised? No. Did anyone know what was going on until a couple of days before? Also no.

It wasn’t the best launch of a car but offering it only to previous purchasers of new GT86s just wouldn’t have worked well. When the GT came out, I was in my early 20s and although I lusted after one, it wasn’t financially viable for me to buy a brand new car so should that have stopped me ordering a GR?

I signed up to the GR86 information emails and received the “it’s now live, go and order it” email around 10:15 so there would still have been time for me to log on and order one. Having looked around the internet for more information, I stumbled upon this site and it did help and we could all add our knowledge and let other people know that it was likely to be of high interest and to try to get in sooner rather than later.
The dealerships were just as out of the loop as we were, most of the people on here had already put down a deposit with their local dealership like they would with and new car release and most of the dealerships were annoyed that Toyota changed their mind on the ordering last minute.
