GR86 Warranty and Service Intervals

Getting to the point without faff, Sorned does not make your service intervals longer, 12 months is 12 months. If the car was sorned after the last service and it didn’t move for 12 months, the service would be due at 12 months.
Sorning a car is only saving you in road tax and insurance, not pausing your service intervals.
 
Fair point Gibbo, as over time consumerable items will deteriorate. Frustrating that to maintain the 12 month annual service interval I'd have to tax it to take it there (unless I trailered it!).

Exactly what I had to do this year; it was SORNd last November and I had to re-Tax the car on 1st February, just to get it to the garage on the 10th - adding to my ‘pain’ the weather was absolutely crap too!
 
Hmm, I haven't had mine serviced by Toyota yet. Picked up in November 2023.
I've serviced it twice myself, and it's done under 5k miles I don't drive it on salted roads... I assume I've left ymself open to a whole host of headaches warranty wise?

In my defence I was waiting for the dealership to answer a question prior to booking and they only answered last week! - not that I'd imagine that will make any difference.
 
Keen to understand why with a new car would you not keep the service in check with the main dealer, especially one that is going to provide a 10 year warranty if you remain taking the car each year/10k miles?

I get that people modify their cars and those components then fall away. If you finance a car surely not having a documented service history (even from an independent garage who uses OEM parts) is going to impact value and if bought outright the same applies if/when you come to sell on.

Each to their own, just interest is all in the thought process after purchasing a new car.
 
I agree with @Gibbo78, having no 'stamped' servicing of any kind for a new car seems like a strange decision. I only went down the independent route for the yr1 & yr2 services because Toyota pi$$ed me off with their total lack of interest in providing me with a Service Plan for a car that was 9 months old and had only covered 37 miles. I'll likely return to main dealer servicing for yr3 onward, to add the extra 12 months rolling warranty. I certainly wouldn't want to leave it to fate :rolleyes:
 
In all honesty I've had a very busy year, and not really driven it since before it was due.

It's not even done 5,000 miles from new, so it’s not due "mechanically". I thought I'd get a reminder or notification when its due but never did so forgot, only really thought about the time aspect when I saw this thread! No finance to worry about.

It's not that I don't plan on getting it serviced at the main dealer, i.e. paying for the stamp to redo work I've done (although leaving it in a packed dealership carpark to collect dings and grubby mechanics sitting on the bolsters getting in and out trips my OCD). I just haven't got around to it yet. It doesn't go out in the winter / on salted roads. Things are clearing up so I’ll book it in the next month or so.

My understanding of manufacturers 3 year warranty was you didn’t have to have it serviced at Toyota, that is only a factor to keep the free extended warranty, I perhaps naively thought that as I have a spreadsheet of service dates, parts used with receipts I can defensively say it’s been adequately maintained, up until the first “dealer” service, which will be in half the specified mileage, but admittedly by then 5 months or so late. But then pushing my annual service to a more agreeable season.



The daft thing is I actually mailed the dealership asking to have a few defects looked at at service time (poor seat stitching, and a passenger seat rattle) back in October and they only just replied last week, maybe I can say I was awaiting a dealership response before booking :D



Is it likely I’ve borked my factory warranty then? – the warranty terms and conditions here only mention keeping to interval for the “additional” warranty

I hear you! When taking cars for a service I’ve been known to face the rear dash cam forward to record the cabin (upside down) and the front dash cam down to view the driving area to record the interior goings on. When I had a car with soft-close doors mechanics would just slam the door shut despite me putting a polite notice on the window reminding them of this nice but irritating feature. I caught one trying to unplug the dashcam! Also helps decide whether to return to that dealer again or not.

You are right in that you don't have to have it serviced by Toyota, that's part of MVBER (Motor Vehicle Block Exemptions Regulations).

In order to maintain manufacturers warranty the car would need be serviced in accordance to the service schedule, using genuine/original parts and fluids that meet or exceed Toyota's standards and for it to be done by a VAT registered garage.

It's that last bit that might see you unstuck, however in the past Toyota have been quite far when it comes to warranty, you may still be covered but it could be a PITA should you need to claim anything. It's 50/50.

My car has been serviced by an independent specialist. It will never see inside a Toyota dealership all the time it's under the 3 year warranty because I simply have no faith in them.

That's the only bit that would get me.

Don't forget the servicing I did was additional, I have never intended to do it instead of the dealer service, its just life got it the way a bit and I’m a bit late. (I get the impression form response that people think I planned to never get it serviced “officially”).

We all know that the reality of it is that a few months over time when you have done half the mileage is a non-issue in reality, but could be used as an excuse to worm out of any potential future claims.

I could tell them I did an oil change before every track day, that’d help! :LOL:
 
Grace period is usually +4 weeks (not sure what the mileage allowance is, defo under 1k), and that is allowed if there is lack of availability of appointments or issues with parts (such as oil filters). Only time I have known manufactures to go further than this was during COVID .

An increasing number of garages do this as a matter of 'security' (for want of a better term). My local garage of over 27 years now has a sign on the wall at reception stating that all Dashcams will be switched off by them, if not already done so by the owner. If customers do not agree with the policy the vehicle will not be serviced/MOTd. I am happy to do this myself in the GR86, as pulling out the power lead 'willy-nilly' on a Blackvue Dashcam can lead to corruption of the SD Card, and 'high endurance' cards are expensive enough to buy without some daft spanner monkey apprentice breaking them ... 🙈

My local dealer is telling me that the service needs to be done yearly within a month of the original car sale date, rather than within a 13 months of the last service. Are they right? My understanding was that we needed to service it a year after the last service, with a month's grace = 13 months since last service.
 
Not had the challenge as I always service within the next 12 months.
Email to TUK will give you it in b&w and easier to then have the convo with dealership.
 
My car was registered on something like the 10th February and I've moved my service date out to the right by a Month every year since then; because I ain't going out in the crap weather fo sho!
Only the first 3 years are covered by the 'proper' warranty, the rest come under 'Toyota Relax' and are Service Activated. Toyota's website states "After the first 3 years expire, you receive an extra 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty coverage every time you complete a qualifying full or interim service at an authorized Toyota UK Centre."
Next year my 4th Annual Service will take place at the beginning of April, and just like the one I had done in March last year, will be entered into my electronic record with confirmation of my 12M warranty following sometime after. Not had any indication that the difference between dates would be a problem, especially at £600 a pop! So @Triggaaar, I'd say that the dealership is talking from a different orifice than would be normal for us humans... :LOL:

So you've been getting 12 months cover, plus up to a month to get the next service done. Are you saying that's been the case for the servicing done within the first 3 years, AND also the servicing done since the first 3 years.

My 3 years warranty ran out nearly a month ago, so perhaps the service I had done 12 months ago was just part of that, and didn't give me another 12 months plus one month grace?

No. The car had no Warranty coverage during the time between the end of one 12m period and then getting the next qualifying service done. There isn't a grace period and I'm pretty sure Toyota UK would reject any claim put forward citing such - they are tight b4$tards at the best of times!
My car was SORN, in storage and not on the road during its 'off warranty' time, so not having it place didn't matter to me. I was more worried about getting stopped for no Tax or MOT when I was on my way to the dealership in Hamilton (even though it's pefectly legal to do so).

Ah ok. So my car should be without warranty in a few days. But do I definitely get another 12 months warranty from the next service, despite there being a break (ie, the car not having a service for just over 12 months)?
