GR86 Warranty and Service Intervals

Hi,

I'm considering buying an approved used GR86 at a Toyota Dealer that was registered in May 2023.

It is only sitting on 1200 miles now.

The only service it's had so far was in Oct 2024 at 600 miles.

So that means 17 months went by between car being registered and it's first service (understandable as it was barely driven)

Are there any long term warranty implications there, especially for the yearly extensions after year 3. Do I need to make the dealer put anything in writing as part of the purchase (I'm looking to buy the two year service plan they've offered).

Thanks.

That could very potentially have implications for the manufacturer warranty, and an easy get out in the event of a claim.

I’d be getting something in writing from Toyota (not the dealership!).

As other have said @Andyoz, you should get something in writing (email) from Toyota UK that the remaining Warranty will remain in place, given that the car is being sold under the Toyota Approved Used Scheme. Unfortunately, the original owner should have ensured that the First Service was carried out within the specified 12m period, irrespective of mileage, because the schedule clearly states whichever occurs first. My first service took place just after I bought it, at around 350 miles as the car had been in storage by the original owner, my second service a short while ago was at a lofty 3,000mls. Until the car hits 3 yrs old it should be kept tight to the schedule, you could (if you need to) 'stretch' things out a little after that, as it becomes a rolling 12m Warranty after each OEM service. I'll be moving my YR3 service (and MOT) from early February into March so I don't have to go out in such shi**y weather as I did this year, it just means the car will have to stay parked up on my driveway for the few interim weeks when it won't have yet been MOTd...
Good luck with your new car!

My parents bought an approved used 2021 Aygo from a Toyota dealer with "full service history". When I bought my GR86 they took my Micra so went to WeBuyAnyCar to shift the Aygo. They had to obtain the service records from Toyota and turns out the first service was done 13 months after it was first sold. WeBuyAnyCar wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. They got a sale on Carwow but were offered about £2000 less than their initial offer. Thankfully after complaining Toyota took the car back for market value due to the dishonest initial sale so it all worked out but it caused a lot of headaches and stress. Maybe worth keeping in mind in case you try to sell further down the road.

How does the extended 10 year warranty work after the initial 3 years? If I Sorned the car over winter, could I get a Service in say April 4 months after the due date and the extended 1 year warranty would still be covered or would I need to service it on time in December to keep it rolling?

The year's cover runs from the moment you have it serviced at the dealership, for the following 12 months. If you are on a monthly Service Plan I'd imagine that you can't move the date? I don't have a service plan, so moving it out by a month isn't much of an issue as I'll be paying in cash at the time. Pushing yours out by 4 months might be a bit of a stretch though, as you'd end up with an extended 'gap' in your maintenance record, so when it comes to selling you might have to explain that gap to a potential buyer.

Probably sat in a Toyota dealer for a while, preregistered, as many of them seemed to need “demo” vehicles even though they had all sold out prior to anyone wanting or getting a demo.

Toyota UK should hopefully underwrite it.

I was told 4 weeks grace for the service - past that and you’ve missed the boat.

I did query it with Toyota dealer today and their response:

"Doesn’t effect the warranty because its still within the manufactures warranty.
Then if you keep the car serviced every 10,000 miles or every 12 months whichever comes first, then the warranty gets extended by 10,000 miles or 12 months whichever comes first."

Well every day is a school day, who knew you could have a car under manufacture warranty, don't service it for three years and bag the savings. Really..... what next, free tyres if you make them last 20k?

Yes re 4 weeks, I checked due to the oil filter supply issue.

Bottom line 12 months/10k no matter what, doesn't matter if the car is SORN or only done 1k miles. I personally would not touch a car if it wasn't bang on the service and for a main Toyota dealer to be selling it, says a lot about them also!

I'd ask for a copy of the Approved Used Vehicle warranty documentation from the dealer and go through that very carefully.

That directly contradicts the guidance from Toyota.

You need something from the manufacturer, not the dealership.

If that’s the sales exec or manager, quite frankly, what do you think they’ll say to get a sale…?

Yes exactly.
It's all fine until you actually try to make a claim in a few years and HQ is going through the paperwork...

Even worse, there's a 2020 GR Yaris for sale near me at £30k with 120 miles and never seen a service. Unsurprisingly, he's had it listed for months now.

Yes, that's the big problem IMO and one reason for buying these cars in the first place.
The 10 year warranty is just added each year at a time when you have the car serviced at a Toyota dealer. It's not the same cover as the initial 3 years manufacturer warranty.

So to be fair if you bought that unserviced car with 2 years used car warranty and kept servicing it at Toyota you'd be no worse off.

As the mileage is so low it's not likely to have been tracked, which is the major cause of engine failure in these cars.

After three responses from TUK I finally got a meaningful (I think) answer to my initial request. I'd Sorned my car from December through to March trying to avoid the local Authority's obsession locally with salting to road at the merest hint of the temperature hovering around freezing. Understandable so but night after night so the roads were thick with a salty syrup.
What I wanted to know form TUK was the warranty still valid on my car despite the service interval being 15 months (due to it being Sorned). The first two responses from them were just waffle so in my final e mail I said all I want basically is a 'yes of no' answer!
Here is their response, it may be of interest to others;
Thank you for your email and I'm sorry if my previous emails didn't answer your question.
I can advise if you have the service carried out at 15 months, your warranty wouldn't be invalidated as not all components are covered by the service.
It could have an impact on any engine-related claims, if the failed component is linked to the service.
