GR86 Vehicle Security

Worth responding with evidence of the two quotes, and seeing what they say to that…?
I don't really feel like sending them my quotes tbh, I think it narrows down my argument to them too much, that being the fact that I bought it under the impression it has an alarm, only to find out later that it doesn't. I'm going to be filing my complaint with the motoring ombudsman mainly going through the misrepresentation of goods route. Talking about insurance this and that to Toyota likely won't yield many results as fast I think.

I wonder how common this is. My own insurance company just specifies "manufacturer's standard" for security, and when I raised it with them they told me it makes no difference as far as they (and therefore my premium) are concerned.
You Sir are correct - regardless of the fact we may not have in the car what was expected, the questions asked require this response alone to an insurance company. In terms of a case, I may be wrong but 'class action' is from across the pond. Sometimes shouting about the right thing in the right way gets the outcome required. However, as others have said, in no way is a Toyota dealer or a specialist hacking away at my car to install an alarm, unless it's a pretty simple process. The sleep I loose at night (which is all but nil) has nothing to do with whether this car is alarmed. I am holding off until the right time to send the right email. But patience always rewards.

Further to your recent contact with us, the purpose of this communication is to offer clarity and confirmation regarding the GR86 specification, with specific reference to the fitment, or non-fitment, of an alarm.

Before we confirm the situation, thank you for bearing with us during these last few weeks. It’s been frustrating that our investigations to seek clarity have been far lengthier than anticipated and for this we’re sorry. We’re also aware there has been some miscommunication and possibly some misunderstanding or misinterpretation of official communications; what should be a straightforward answer to a seemingly simple question has not until now, been forthcoming.

The GR86, designed, assembled and distributed from Japan, is a global model. As such and based on various and varying local requirements there are often specification differences from country to country even on the same model. Specification differences range from the type of alloy wheels, multimedia or infotainment systems, paint colours and indeed the inclusion or activation (or non- activation) of an alarm. For this reason, getting a definitive answer has been more troublesome than one might expect. Since this question of alarm fitment was raised to us, we have requested full factory details from our colleagues at the manufacturing plant but for the aforementioned reasons, it has remained inconclusive. Therefore we enlisted the help of our own product technical experts to investigate. (Physical inspection sounds straightforward but in practice and reality, alarm immobiliser systems are no longer easy to locate as a stand-alone unit and are incorporated within the internal construction of the vehicle.)

With all that said, our conclusion is this model does not have an alarm unit fitted. Sadly, we are not able to advise on a retrospective fitment or a compatible third-party unit.

We are advised however, the absence of an alarm has no bearing on insurance group ratings for this model. We can also confirm that for our customers with Toyota Insurance the absence of an alarm has no impact on pricing or premiums. (Please note we are not able to confirm the approach other insurers might take and whether it’s a factor they may or may not take into account as a part of their approach to pricing)

Once again, please accept our sincere apologies for the time taken to confirm this, and hope it does not detract from your overall enjoyment of the car.

Looks like a cut and paste of the email I've just received, I've asked if they consider the case closed. If it's the latter then I think it's time for ombudsman/class action etc.

Outstanding. I've asked them what they plan to do to resolve this issue, so I'll see what copy and paste response I get back.

I don't buy that it has no impact on insurance. Why else is it one of the highest insurance groups given its cost/performance.

So Toyota are saying the alarm siren is already fitted to the car?

'buzzer, wireless door lock' sounds more like it would be the external sounder for the keyless system (although I suppose it could be used for both functions). Alarm sounders are usually battery-backed though and I'd expect it to be more expensive than this part appears to be.

I would expect an alarm to have a tilt sensor and ultrasonic/cabin sensors fitted rather than just relying on an open circuit from a door, bonnet or boot contact switch. If the loom has the required connectors fitted and the items in question didn’t require any hacking or drilling of bodywork and trim to install I’d be relatively comfortable with a retrofit if offered but it’s all a bit of an unknown quantity at the moment.

Although recent posts have been referring to a potential increase in insurance premiums as a result of the lack of an alarm, surely it is more a case of a misdescription of goods which is covered in the Consumer Rights Act 2015?

It's both!

Now we have an insurance broker taking an active role I wonder if they can give an insight into the issues of alarm/no alarm and whether it affects premiums, insurance group rating, fewer insurance companies willing to quote, etc?

They have at least confirmed what we knew but to add they can't advise on retrospective rectification is an appalling failing on their part. Group action is definitely called for.

Well this didn’t take long…

Attempted burglary last night!! Thankfully they didn’t get in but no doubt they were after our cars.

Yikes!

Dog back to sleeping downstairs and alarm sorted already.

@HowdenSpecialistInsurance Would you generally see insurance premiums decrease if the car had an alarm fitted? If it came with one from the factory would that knock the insurance group down?

I got this response today:

For me, this is totally unacceptable and I am giving serious consideration to returning the car on point of principle (as I am still within my 14 day return period).

Seems to be fairly conclusive. Only you can decide if rejecting the car is the best course of action in your case. To my mind, it makes no difference and I shall plod on regardless.

To the rest of the room; Seeing as I'll be needing some physical security, what size of Disklok does the GR86 steering wheel take, is it small?

I think I will be returning it on point of principle and have just emailed Toyota to confirm what I need to do. As much as I like it, at the end of the day, it is just a car (albeit one that is 'not as described').

Pretty sure the Disc Lock is small. I have one that I otherwise use on my RS, which has been deployed to the GR86 due to the lack of an alarm  . I should warn you though , there isn't an awful lot of room to manoeuvre it in getting it on and off (without bashing and potentially marking some of the scratchy plastics in and around the dashboard area).
