GR86 Vehicle Security

Not sure our cars are that desirable, it's only a Toyota Subaru, unless you live in a really dodgy area.
The crims are after Range Rovers, Porsches etc.

I've used the 'Copy Text' tool available within the Screenshot facility on my phone:

"If a thief cannot copy or intercept your key's signal, your car can still be stolen if they are able to access your OBD (On Board Diagnostics) port.

OBD ports are designed to be easily
accessed for car maintenance, which means that they are not encrypted. If a thief can get to one, they can use a reader to gain access to your car's electronic systems. This means that they can disable any immobilisers, change your key's codes and start the car. These readers are readily available online.

To get access to the port, which is usually under the steering wheel or in the driver's footwell, the thief will probably break a window. It is possible to do this without setting off the car's alarm, but even if the alarm does go off, the thief can quickly stop it via the OBD port."

Had to smile at the reference to the alarm I the last sentence...
 
@Cambman - Not something I’ve ever worried about. OBD theft has been around for years. As my GR86 is fitted with a Ghost, it’s better protected than your average car from any form of cloning, key theft as well as OBD hacking. That said, nothing is ever 100% as time and technology moves on.

Has anybody got a recommendation for a Cobra alarm fitter that either does nationwide fitting or is based near Manchester/Leeds?
 
After 9months, the Ombundsman said I filed the claim in the incorrect category and I have to start afresh.... :mad:

Can anyone do me a favour and give me a screenshot or PDF of the purchase details showing the car was meant to have a Car Alarm. Too many pages here to trawl through. Thanks in advance!

1st Adjudicator found in my favour.
I have accepted the outcome but Toyota needs to do the same, otherwise it's onto the next level for review by a higher level.

My outcomes are
Provide 3 quotes for fitting of an alarm/immobiliser and Toyota pick one to cover the bill
or
Return the car minus 15p per mile.

If a return is your favoured option I think 15p per mile isn't a bad 'hit' to take in the current market place, especially given some of the pre-owned prices and offers being tendered by WBAC etc - It would make it the cheapest long term 'Hire Car' a person could get I reckon! :LOL:
 
I’ve been waiting since mid June for the outcome of adjudicator. I’d always asked them to take the car back and hence never offered any compensation for the alarm (well they did and then withdrew it saying it was a mistake) At 800 miles covered so far, I’d gladly give them the car back at 15p/mile!
 
I'm at around 4500miles, but a fair bit more invested into the car with wheels, grow springs, camber plates, exhaust, and other accent pieces. I always knew the mods don't help themselves on a return but any value I gain in returning the car is lost if I did want to continue owning a GR86, which I still do!

They are allowed to inspect the car and deduct any damage, I do wonder what would happen if I showed up to this inspection with non-stock wheels for example.

Whilst I’m still eagerly awaiting a response from them can I clarify whether I understood that you were actually offered the option to return the car or was that your proposal to them?

If you still want to own the car, then surely there won't be any inspection, you'll just want the money to fit an alarm?

I did not mention returning the vehicle at all, the ombudsman provided me with these as options as they believe i still have the right of refusal usually used at the point of handover.

I can only guess that this is because Toyota should have made it known to me about the spec changes at that point, and provided me the choice of taking or leaving.

This isn't final, and I imagine Toyota will reject this resolution since this is included. Or fear a free return loophole.
