GR86 Vehicle Security

The specification document on Toyota.co.uk has also been changed so it no longer notes alarm+immobiliser.

In other news I think my cc company are going to reject my S75 claim as the legislation says it only applies to purchases between £100 and £30,000. I bought the auto so I'm outside the upper threshold. That's what you get when you can't be arsed to use a clutch!

Hopefully someone else will pursue via S75. I think the manual would be just under? Still expect action from Trading Standards and The Motor Ombudsman but God knows how long that will take.
Does the £30k limit apply to the total invoice price? The base price was £29995 but additional extras put it over so on a technicality would it then qualify?

I've been thinking of getting an A110 and trading in my GR86. Have the issues been with Alpine as a dealership or with the car itself or a combo?
I too have an A110 itch as well, but what would be the benefit in getting one of those when compared with the GR86?

The GR is much more practical, has a manual gearbox and is a lot cheaper. It's also as exclusive as an A110 so is a no brainer when you think about it.

It's probably something to be better discussed in a seperate thread rather than this one, but I'd make sure you get a decent test drive of the Alpine before thinking about it too much. I tried it, it wasn't for me, I just didn't gel with it, and that was before taking the price difference into my decision, but others love it.

With regard to the motoring ombudsman having a lengthy backlog of cases for those that have bought on finance there may also be an avenue of the financial ombudsman if they have less of a backlog.

I had a complaint with the ombudsman about a power company. Got a judgement in my favour. The power company lied and said they had done what they were told to and the ombudsman closed the case. I then had months of the power company arguing with the ombudsman until I found that their rulings aren't even binding. What a waste of time.

For the alarm issue, a money claim might be easier. Submit purchase paperwork, Toyota's response and 3 quotes for fitting what should have been fitted. That's the claim amount. No business likes a CCJ.

This.

If the whole buying process had been first class and I had been given VIP red carpet treatment (it wasn't) I would have told a couple of people how good Toyota are to deal with and I would recommend buying from them, as for this off handed treatment over a few quids worth of missing components I will now tell everyone I ever meet don't buy a Toyota, they are a shit company to deal with. Very short sighted view from Toyota.

I’m definitely inclined to air my views of the borderline contempt Toyota UK have shown with respect to the alarm issue.

It’s all the more frustrating that they’ve taken the tone they have in response to legitimate concerns we have. All due to their professional incompetence given they’re seemingly unable to accurately describe a £30,000 product they’re selling. One with only colour and transmission type as options the buyer has any influence over. It’s hardly in the realm of a BMW/Audi/porsche there there’ll be hundreds/thousands of potential spec combinations!

Still looks to be present on their site to my eyes. Also no hiding being Europe etc given they’ve published it on a .co.uk URL. I’d like to think that strengthens the case with respect to reasonable evidence/expectation from a customer perspective if you’re going the route of misrepresentation.

Just curious, how many people would have not bought the car if they knew it had an immobilise but not an alarm?
Ha ha. I still would have. Toyota are a bunch of tossers for getting the spec wrong, but I still would have bought the car if I knew it didn't have an alarm, reversing sensors and auto-dimming rear view mirror from day one. And I couldn't care less. 😁

Now if it had come with a cvt gearbox by mistake, I think that would have been a different story. ☹️

I used to teach Audi and Bentley apprentice technicians and one of the fundamental classes they covered was about customer satisfaction and first time fix.. The knock on effect of a single customer having a bad experience is pretty mind boggling when you take into account the collateral damage caused when that customer speaks to his friends and family

Only the manual, black was under 30k in the first batch. All the other colours were cost options so were above.

tbh, I thought Kish from TOL was in general very easy to deal with and the whole process was simple. Specification change issues notwithstanding. The dealer could have been much sharper in comms, and it took a senior person to step in and sort some simple requests out - and those requests made their £500 easier to earn (as a dealer) in my book!

I'm not saying the process was bad for me, it was just meh. The downgraded interior mirror was never mentioned, the parking sensors were grudgingly fitted, I'm sure if the missing parking sensors were only picked up now we would be having the same problems getting Toyota to acknowledge the issue and them trying to fob us off.

It's their attitude that pisses me off, if they had been apologetic and said book it in at your local dealer when it's convenient for a retrofit I would have thought far more highly of them but the squirming and wriggling to avoid cost just relegates to them to the same cesspool as other shady small time con men and shysters. I have had better dealings with one man bands on ebay.

They have come back to me and said I can reject the car but I have told them I don't want that I just want the complete car I ordered and bought and given them an ultimatum to fix it.

I've half a mind to fit a 3rd party alarm and bill Toyota for it!

The last correspondence from Toyota has indicated I should go to the ombudsman (could Toyota give any less f**ks?) so I have spent 30 minutes on hold to them and managed to speak to no-one, I think I see right through Toyota's cunning plan!

In other news S75A may be an alternative to s75 (£30k limit) my reading of it allows claims between £30k and £60,260.

How many of us would like a action or gesture from TUK regarding the lack of an alarm system?

If there’s only a few, then nothing will happen. If its a good bunch of owners, then a crowd speaks louder than a few.

List- please add base detail-

This list is internal, not for cutting and pasting, or group communication to TUK. However they might well be monitoring and see it.
All I’d do, is add to my correspondence by quoting a number (list total) of unhappy owners 👍

Toyota need to fix the issue for any customer who is unhappy about it. It shouldn't matter if it's one person or a thousand. Anyone bothered should escalate to Trading Standards and The Motor Ombudsman. Online lists of disgruntled owners will be far less effective than TS or TMO

Most of my reply to TUK

-This is no fault of mine, and a simple analogy would be if I paid for ham, egg and chips- would I be happy to received ham and chips, and no egg? Of course I wouldn’t.

My understanding is that this falls foul of the sale of goods act. Toyota have not provided me with the full product they described at point of sale. I’m sorry, but I see no reason why I should accept that Toyota UK won’t address what I consider to be a major failing.

In the horrible world, when bad people hear that the GR8 UK spec has no alarm, do Toyota not see that could lead to cars being broken in to and personal contents removed.

Obviously I cannot allow the cars security failings to hang over me like a dark cloud waiting for the inevitable break in, damage and loss of property.
Do Toyota UK believe they are above the sales of goods act, and Toyota uk published specification. Do they believe such errors within the Corporation should not be addressed, and feel its acceptable to simply “Dear John” the agreed problem with a sorry, but we won’t be doing anything?

I strongly disagree with Toyota’s stance on the matter. No supplier of any goods is allowed (in law) to fail to deliver goods (as published and presented in marketing spec) without address.

So how shall I address this problem?

* Reject the car (CRA 2015 applies)
* Bang the drum on the GR86 uk forums for a group action
* Litigate for mis representation (1967- negligent mis representation by the supplier)

Before going to the time, cost and effort of doing any of the above I would ask that your management team for the product review the TUK stance and see if there is away of avoiding unpleasantness, and loss of repute to the Toyota brand.

Regards

They keep regurgitating their reply of go to the ombudsman if you are not happy so I have asked them directly if they are refusing to fix the issue, once they confirm that then I will contact the finance company for a s75A claim. A bit ironic that it is financed by Toyota Financial Services (hope they are not biased lol)

Maybe start a new thread with a poll to see who is interested in a group action letter?
