Yes I know we have touched on this in other areas across the forum (e.g. "fresh whip" thread etc.), but I thought we could have a separate thread for a number of reasons.

Firstly, it's dead common innit. Hardly a day goes by without a GR86 owner posting about how some poor sod has got the GR86 and Supra confused.

Secondly, I was exposed to this sorry state of affairs for the very first time myself today (I have managed to avoid it in over two and a half years of GR86 ownership). So there I am, filling up at a local Shell garage and a bloke pulls up close by in an Audi A-something (and yes I am aware of the irony of not knowing which paper size his pride and joy is named after, given the subject of my ramblings here). Bloke wanders over and says "oh nice, which model of Supra is that?". Now, what is crucial here is that this fellow wasn't asking if my car is a Supra, he had already decided that it definitely was a Supra and just needed to check which particular one. Incredible. Obviously I did the whole "GR86 new version of the GT86 with Subaru" thing we all do, and was met with the same blank look that we all are in similar scenarios.

Thirdly - and perhaps most importantly - having a central depository for these sorry tales may help us as GR86 owners work together to come up with ideas to help drive increased awareness of how the GR86 and Supra are both fine vehicles which can co-exist happily but crucially are completely effing different.

And, while I'm on the subject, has anyone spared a thought for the Supra driver in all this? Has their car ever been confused for a GR86? How do they feel when having their car mistaken for a vastly superior driving machine*?

As always, your thoughts and experiences are welcome and perhaps together we can work to banish this scourge of confusion from the motoring enthusiast landscape.

Awesome. I am stealing this for the next time I see my Audi A3 owning friends (although one of them has an S3 now, and it would comfortably run rings around my Toyobaru tofu truck, so maybe I'll have to wait until he's at the bar. He's got an alarm, too).

I do find I get a few blanks after saying "it's a GR86" after originally being asked if it's a Supra/Celica/Porsche.

I feel like this whenever I explain what it is.

My guess is that it is confused rather with a bmw even though it doesn't look like one but blame toyota for building it on germany. Think it has been one of the most controversial decisions ever.
 
Other than the obvious ‘it’s not a Supra if it’s not made in Japan’ (which I get) is it actually a negative that the Supra has a BMW backbone? Having never had a BMW I don’t know, but the build quality, etc is generally pretty good isn’t it? Always struck me as a slightly odd argument given how drastically different the Supra and Z4 look (and perform by all accounts). It’s never really bothered me that we have a Subaru-based Toyota.

People don't appreciate unless you are Porsche, you can't make a sports car by yourself, it's too expensive, hence the joint ventures.

I have also had my car accused of being a Celica by a co-worker. I didn't correct him, just nodded and smiled. He later apologised after he had a proper look around it .
 
How about a response of:
‘Oh, are you a petrolhead?’

If the response is a resounding ‘yes’ you have a choice of the following responses:
Simply LOL and drive away still laughing.
‘Really, are you sure?’
‘I did say petrolhead?’
‘Do you know what N/A means?’
(You get the idea)

If the response is ‘no’:
‘Ah right, this is in fact one of Toyota’s other GR performance cars.’ (And smile)
 
Had a "is that the new GT86" from a mate's neighbour today so they are getting warmer...

What is/was it?

I'm seeing all sorts in there. Thought it was an MR2 but it has rear seats. Not a GR86. I even see some Ford fkn Probe in there ffs (ask your parent(s), kids).
