GR86 The GR86 “The Orders / Owners List / GR86 Register”

Morning folks. We’ve not had a new member join the list for over 24 hours , now stands at 164, with 160 U.K. based. I’m sure we will gather more over the coming months and when cars do arrive.

I’m not sure how many folk @Adam has managed to capture for the Owners maps , if you want to be included please add a location in your profile 👍

@beorg has kept the Colour data updated but with a decent sample size I doubt we will see any massive variations in colour split from what we have already.

I am a little surprised that Electric Blue is by far the most popular choice , I did think Ignition Red would be top , we do have a thread to discuss this so I’d be interested to folks thoughts on this one.

We still have two “Unicorn“ cars 6ATs in Pearl White and Ice Silver 🤷‍♂️

Folk have started some interesting threads so there are plenty of topics to discuss whilst passing the time whilst waiting for “that phone call”

Cheers

Andy

I think Toyota have done a great job.

They’ve delivered a great looking lightweight RWD NA manual sports car for around the same price as a well spec’d 1.5 diesel Astra.

Despite covid/semiconductor shortages Toyota made 7.6M cars last year. I can guarantee they won’t be making much money out of a few thousand GR86s in Europe, especially as they can only sell for 2 years. They will have had to invest millions getting it through type EU approvals, most likely they’ll be making a loss. No surprise Subaru decided it was too much hassle to sell the BRZ in Europe. I’m sure with all the whinging going on they might be wishing they hadn’t bothered too.

Regarding pulling pre-orders, well these were never proper orders and Toyota never committed to them, they were upfront it would be a special ordering process. A few dealers were taking these to tie people in and I’m afraid a fair bit of the pre-order frenzy was whipped up on here, with people complaining that their local dealers wouldn’t take £500-£1000 off them to get a foot in the door in a non existent queue, this of course then resulted in more dealers being pressured to take these “orders”.

I’m finding all this negatively a bit depressing, it really is a first world problem. Just thank your lucky stars this is all you have to worry about, there are much, much worse things going on in the world right now.
Yes, Toyota have done a great job creating this car and selling it in Europe. However that is credit to Toyota Japan. I feel Toyota UK have botched it. You talk about dealers taking deposits is somehow not allowed. It’s always been done. When was this special order process you mention announced? The first mention I saw of online orders only was during the week orders were supposed to be live. Talk about last minute decision. Dealers were confused, customers were confused. Over two weeks after placing an order people are still unsure if they will get a car. Well done TUK!

Did Toyota announce anything regarding orders or pre-orders? I don’t recall.

Meanwhile, scummy dealerships (which are separate companies, with nothing to do with Toyota UK) were taking pre-orders to tie you in and to get commission.
Even on the week when it was finally announced the orders were being taken online, I called my local dealer wishing to talk about the deposit they took, and the guy that answered lied to my ear, that he can order a GR86 for me *RIGHT NOW*.

I get it, the communication from Toyota may have been too vague in the past, but people here have put too much trust into word of dealer salesmen.

Given the tone of the explanation and apology letter I received from my local dealer, I suspect it's just as likely that a strongly worded letter would be heading in the other direction.

Think you are on another planet. This info doesn’t fit with the letter of apology I had from Toyota U.K. Stick to the facts not speculation

As to your comment most sales will be online ? Where’s your evidence to support that wide sweeping statement. Fine if you want the Tesla experience not really a fit with high end brands

It's not unreasonable for a Toyota franchised dealer to take a deposit for a new Toyota car from a customer.

If you wish to start a debate about how franchised dealers conduct themselves then please start a new thread.

Perhaps, but to me a Toyota dealer represents Toyota. When I heard that pricing had been announced, I contacted my dealer to make enquiries and was informed that I could come in, talk about finance/part exchange values, and order a car if I wished. At that point, there was no mention of online only orders, nor any suspicion that I was "pre-ordering". I was just - ordering a new car from a dealership, as far as I knew. I walked in, spent a couple of hours discussing stuff, and left having paid a deposit and with a complete order form. You know....generally how people order new cars. I kind of resent this implication from some that I lacked "common sense" by taking this approach.

It was only through joining this forum that I heard about the "online orders only". Which is fine, but the dealer I'd already paid had seemingly not been informed.

As I just said above, this implication that I am "silly" is starting to grate. I wasn't expecting to "jump a queue" because at the time I ordered, I wasn't aware there was a "queue" to jump. No announcement had been made about ordering online. Pricing was announced by Toyota in early April, I enquired with about buying the car at a Toyota dealer, and therefore thought I'd ordered a Toyota.

Can we have one area of this forum for people who are interested in cars and another section for people who seem to have far too much time on their hands posting the same old nonsense about dealers and wild speciation about numbers based upon zero facts. Otherwise it’s just becoming a pretty boring place to visit. Moderators need to start moving some of these posts to other areas

I think we are going over old ground AGAIN and the pre-order story is now history, please stick to the thread and avoid making accusations regarding the behaviour of dealers and salesperson who you have no personal knowledge of.

When posting a good rule to consider is “would you say the same thing if you were stood in front of that person ?”

Keep it friendly folks 🙏

Had my call, 10:09 confirmation for an electric blue manual and estimated delivery is October. Car hasn’t gone into build yet so she couldn’t say more than that.

The girl I spoke to was really nice and said she’d had a lot of requests for the plates not being attached and PDI not being carried out.

Maybe a bit too early to call it but are the deliveries being indicated for a bit later in the year as they work through the list? Seemed to be Aug/Sept at the start now mentions of October?

She didn’t give the September/early October response to me either, seemed pretty certain it was going to be October.

The way the deliveries are going back could indicate that this is it ref allocated cars.

If I get one I'm resigned to it being well into 2023.

So it's 2 weeks since we all put our money where our mouth is & put a deposit down on a car we haven't seen or driven & for me since the 20th I've had zero communication from Toyota, part of me really wants to call them & ask what's going on, but I'm holding fire as from what we've been led to believe it's a very small overworked team & they will get to you eventually, but how hard would it be to put something on there website explaining what's happening?
Can't help but feel unhappy that they've taken a £1000 of us all & a lot of us have heard nothing since, or am I just being a grumpy old sod?

I said as much the other day, an email to those with a paid deposit (or even a message on the website) just giving a brief indication of expected timescales would help. It shouldn't be too hard to come up with a few lines of info to allow us to plan ahead. If my car is a 2023 car I will need to look for a snotter to see me though the winter months.

Finally some movement in my purchase status ...
