I've asked this before but it got lost in chatter and doesn't seem worth starting a separate thread 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, does anyone else monitor gearbox (M/T) oil temperatures with ECU Connect app & dongle? If so, does yours read higher than engine oil temperature? Mine even goes negative when it gets hot enough.

Doesn't seem right to me. When I used to use Torque Pro for this the gearbox oil PID always read lower than engine oil temp.

I regularly log M/T oil temp through Torque Pro and Bluetooth OBDII reader, on a B road run, once up to temp, l get temps of between 65-75 deg C.

Its unlikely it's very accurate.
The software is converting a voltage signal from the sensor into a value.
If you went out and brought a thermistor type temperature sensor it comes with chart and you need to configure the ECU or the digital gauge so the temp reading is correct.
I am running a temp sensor in the T/Case. On a B road it runs around 110 deg C.

Ah shucks, that's a shame but good to know, I had no idea. I like your sensor, did it fit in to an existing repository on the case or did you have to tap a new one for that?

I also log engine oil temp and engine oil pressure. Are these PIDs similarly calculated via voltage conversion?
 
I had to drill and tap a new hole. I was a bit nervous drilling into the T/Case but it turned out ok. I have been told the T/Case runs hotter than the Trans.

The pressure and temp sensors are voltage. 5 volts supply, usually 0.1 to 4.9 signal voltage which gets convert into a value by the ECU.

The speed/timing sensors are like a digital pulse signal. Not sure about the MAF.

This is roughly what I used to see with engine oil over 90c. But with ECUtek app the MT temperature starts lower than engine oil but slowly works its way up and past engine oil temp before turning negative!

I reported this to ECUtek months ago who said they'd check on their development car and fix if required, but nothing has changed. Maybe mine's different with being Convenience Pack?

How are you guys doing with the EcuTek remap for Gen 1 cars? I’ve always had it at the back of my mind and wonder how it goes especially on track, regarding temperatures vs stock map?

I'm loving it. The power increase is very noticeable in 3rd gear and above (the ECU restricts boost in 1st-2nd).

The power is now very respectable on track. I didn't notice any difference in temps on track pre and post tune.

I use mine on the road with a tune from Litchfield. It performs well but I feel that there is no way round going to syvecs in the future. The OEM ecu is annoying because it does restrict boost in 1/2nd and if torque produced is above 420nm. Sometimes it feels like the car is alive and other times it just hits a wall and does not want to go. Feed in the throttle is better than hitting it hard. I am on that 420nm limit and I think that maybe it. I would also like more torque earlier and the only way I have seen that achieved is with a stand alone ecu.

Heat is also a killer. It was 30 plus here yesterday and the ecu must have been reacting as it was flat overtaking. Boost sat around 1.0 bar. Boost solenoid maybe? Checked hoses etc and took it out later in the day and it was back to 1.4bar boost. Launching in 1/2nd…..yep that 0.9-1.0 bar boost limit.

This is the standard way that the ECU deals with a heat-soaked engine bay (restricting boost and decreasing timing). Us Aussies know about this only too well, where summer air temperatures reach over 40c.

The worst heat soak occurs in hot weather at slow speed (i.e. in traffic). It's rarely been a problem for me at track days when the air temperature is 30c or less, as air movement at speed cools the heat exchangers and reduces the heat soak. An aftermarket intercooler helped me significantly with heat soak, as did an aftermarket intake. None of these necessarily stop heat soak, they just alleviate it more quickly.

At track days in hot weather I always open the bonnet between sessions to cool the engine bay, and I've experimented with taking the rubbers out underneath the back of the bonnet at each side to provide a channel for engine bay air exhaust when on track (I don't have hood vents).

The 2025 GRY 'aero package' option shows us that Toyota has clearly understood that air movement needs to be improved up front when pressing hard on track in warmer weather, with bonnet and arch vents to exhaust hot engine bay air.

This comes down to a packaging issue: high power in a small engine bay, with perhaps inadequate ventilation for hot weather. Heat management may not be ideal, but I'm still so happy that cars like the GRY exist, and solutions are relatively easy to implement for those in hotter climates.

I should also mention that I find the 'flat foot shifting' ecutek racerom feature very handy on track. Racerom also provides launch control and rolling launch (anti lag) - I've tried them both but I don't have much need for those features.

I was skeptical of flat foot shifting at first, but as my tuner told me it's actually easier on the clutch than normal shifts, as it keeps the turbo spooled for better matched power and torque to be applied after shifts. The GRY has a clutch position sensor, and not simply a clutch depressed on/off switch (I presume the position sensor is for auto start/stop function), and flat foot shifting uses this position sensor to calculate timing, fuel, boost etc.

It's actually a pretty neat ecutek feature (Syvecs has it also), and it did shave a bit of time off my laps.
 
I may need to take mine back to have that feature activated. I did not opt for it at the time. Also looks like I need to think about a bonnet. It was in traffic that it heat soaked. Slow speeds, 30 mph ish

I’ve removed all engine covers. I’m hoping Toyota release the bonnet soon.
