GR86 "That's a fresh whip bruv"; or the Toyota GR86 collated feedback thread

An associate of an associate engaged me in car-related discourse, unfortunately.

Cars came up as a discussion topic and my GR86 was mentioned in conversation and this chap took an interest. He was a bit of a pub bore/know it all/'mansplainy' type.

He asked me how much my car was and I mentioned 30k and how I felt fortunate as this seemed great value in this day and age.

"Do you know the Golf R?" he asked. Not personally, I thought, but answered that I was indeed aware of the model.

Well, read on, comrades, because you will learn something.

Apparently, this blokes mate has just bought a brand new Golf R for "less than (my) GR86" and I "should have bought one of those instead". (Well he said "should of" rather than "should have", but we'll gloss over that for now).

Did you know that the standard Golf R will do "0-60 in two seconds" and "180 mph", cos I jolly well didn't.

At this point I must have looked sceptical, and because I had my phone in my hand he perhaps thought I might attempt to use the internet to challenge these claims. Did you know, comrades, that "VW are not allowed to publish the true performance figures" because "Porsche now own VW" and if they did "no one would buy a Porsche"?

You'll have to excuse me now, friends, as I'm off to inform Autocar/What Car/Top Gear etc. of this scoop immediately.

Wow! I bet those people that bought a Bugatti Veyron will be gutted that they spent a million quid when a Golf R gets to 60mph in less time... That would also make it 0.6 seconds quicker than my Ducati Diavel. Well I'll shit myself a brick and change my name to Hod!

@Silver Fox 0-60mph in two seconds and 180mph top speed is impressive. But if only he mentioned it also has coat/jacket hooks you would have gone weak in the knees.
Around my way, at least, the preferred apparel for the typical Golf R driver seems to be sports or leisurewear, so perhaps jacket hooks are an underused function.

I'd be worried that the immense G forces generated by the titanic performance mentioned above would veritably rip my garments from the hooks, causing the most unfortunate damage.

I'll have to make do with my hook-deficient, glacially slow so-called 'performance' car.

@Silver Fox your burberry check garments will suit the golf well.

Just looked at the price of a new golf £26,000 for the most basic model (R starting at £44,000) 😲

Love this. Hope you just smiled at him.

Had a work colleague ask me how my "Cupra" is going. Told him I don't own one but know someone else has a Cupra Ateca and did he mean him. Then said "is it a Celica?" so he was getting closer. Said what it was he asked about reliability of all things, said it was fine so far. Then he went off on a tangent about how his Mazda 6 was better value than the Toyota or Honda equivalent and 180bhp is plenty. My brain switched off at this point.

Left foot has a bout of Metatarsalgia come on again. I've been losing weight and walk a lot so just a culmination of stress. Need to look into better insoles or physio as it's once a month now. Because of this clutch control has been hard work but today I was in less pain so went to do a shop. Coming out of Sainsbury's just now, wanting to turn right so release clutch a bit quick and was a bit heavy on the gas so slid out the junction. The two kids walking past were impressed saying "wow, a GR86!" The PCSO's behind them not so much πŸ˜…

As much as I enjoy interesting cars, and in some cases talking to other people (who like interesting cars) about cars, this example illustrates rather well how tedious car conversations can be!

Tell it to the judge/magistrates mate. ;)

In all seriousness, hope your foot gets better

I was tempted to ask what happens if you run said Golf R on super unleaded - I suspect we'd be into bending time and space territory...
