Got shouted at recently, ‘sick Supra’ whilst getting in the car near a college, from a gang of lads walking nearby 🤣
 
Last night, Glasgow city centre. Got the 'wow' look as he walked past, saw the badge on the front, then he was clearly annoyed with himself for even acknowledging a Toyota. Somewhat comical!
 
Time to bump this thread back up - it is the best thread on the forum after all.

So my wife has been driving my car today while I'm at work. Yes, it makes me very nervous. Especially when you consider the reason she is driving my car is that she crashed her's into the back of someone yesterday and wrote it off!! It's been a tough day for me mentally.

She decided to call by my work and say hello. She'd just visited remains of her Kia at the recovery yard to get her stuff out of it, where the guy there was - in her words, "literally gushing over the car". He said:

"I've seen these on line but never in real life. It looks amazing, can you fire it up so i can hear it? etc etc"
***praying he didn't mention the price of importing an AWE Touring***

"I've always loved those wheels, they really pop off the black"
***praying he didn't mention the price of a set of RPF1s***

Me, "did he ask if it's a supra?"
Wife, "what's one of those?" She knows her stuff :)

Hopefully my beloved will be in one piece when I get home, and my wife will be alright too.

I experienced tension reading this, especially because of the crashing/writing off element. Emotional rollercoaster.

I am thankful for the happy ending and I DON'T mean the bloke "gushing over the car", you dirty animals

Hopefully he mentioned the saving you made getting in black instead.
 
Two in a weekend:
Yesterday, waiting for my fiance outside the local shop, she gets in the car giggling - she overheard someone say "there's a guy sitting in a really fancy blue car, do you think it could be someone famous".
Today, as we walked up to the car, 2 young lads passing by, one says "I like your car, it's cool" so I say thanks. As they walk off he says to his mate "Sick car that... sick'.
 
Finally after over 2 years of ownership and the lack of attention the pearl white car gets, someone said "that's a really nice car" followed by the usual "so what is it?":ROFLMAO:
Had to explain it was a toyota GR86 with limited production in the UK.
Maybe I'm biased and collected all the GR86 magazine reviews when it came out, but would think that any car guys or girls would know what it is.
Oh well🤷‍♂️
 
If anyone notices mine at all they think it’s a Supra. Years ago, lads in general were so into cars, and they were a huge part of life. They would have been borderline worshipping it, along with the Scoobies and Evos of yesteryear. These days, if it’s not an exotic no one really knows, notices, nor cares. Seems it’s a generational thing. A real shame. Consider the general car on the road now. Usual soulless German thing that looks 99% the same as the next. And then there are “the appliances”. Who’s going to be interested in them? No one.

As a child of the 80s who was in school as the Internet took off, I'm probably the last generation who read a lot of magazines. There are still some great reviews and builds on YouTube, but if someone's primary source of news / new products is from short video format, where short term engagement (a few seconds) prevails, then it's not surprising that understated fun cars don't get the limelight. Coupled with the demise of the simple sports car, amd the likited numbers of the GR86 in particular in the UK it's inevitable that awareness has decreased. The gush factor from those in the know has increased as a result though, so it's not all bad.

All this being said, now that my car sounds like rolling thunder, it's getting rather a lot of attention 😅
 
Does seem a shame, the youtube reviews of the GR are mostly favourable, guess with no top gear either on tele to shout out the GR - it's hidden gem of a car. As you say, when they realise how great the car is, values will have gone through roof;)

I've noticed this as well - younger folk just don't seem that interested in cars. I was sat beside a Ferrari at the lights a few weeks ago as the schools were coming out and not a single kid gave it a look. At least the MX5 guys give me a wave on the B roads!
 
Had to give someone a lift from work yesterday (I don't like giving "strangers" lifts that don't know the rules, because OCD)

"Nice car, what is it?"

She then got in and immediately flapped the visor down and re arranged two of the vents, before we'd even set off.....
