Wireless carplay, high resolution, bigger display.

Also I don’t see how this looks worse? Especially the one in my thread looks much cleaner than original imo. The original one looks straight out of a 2005 VW.
Thanks for the info. It's just a matter of taste, to me it just looks "cheaper". But the display in the GRY is rubbish anyway :). I have wireless CarPlay too, but it's good to know what the thing can do. 👍🏻

Today I installed the screen and it works (mazda 2 hybrid )
I have an energy indicator, tire pressure and fuel gauge. Upgrade the software, everything is fine. Connecting to the carlinkit usb kit also worked. The watch also works well.

The only issue I have is a Pioneer GM D1004 amp I bought and don't know where to put it. behind the radio? will it all get hot enough together? or in the cupboard or under the seat, which will greatly increase the installation costView attachment 28413
Did you have any empty connections on the rear?

Hello everyone,

inspired by the work shown on this post and especially by the experience of @takis1964 I decided to give it a go. I ordered a unit in very good conditions from Sweden, and tried to mount it. As already mentioned by other users there is a green cable that remains disconnected, at the same time there is a 5 pin socket that remains empty on the head unit. Here a picture:

After mounting it (everything else was 1:1 to the original head unit) I tested it. The main reason I wanted to swap the head unit was for native wireless CarPlay and this at least works. I was also a bit nervous about car metrics, energy flow and such, and I was surprised as this worked as well. My T services as already mentioned don't work, I am guessing due to the missing cable which I suppose is for the connection module.
What really disappointed me is that the update of the unit does not work, contrary to what other users observed. Furthermore the navigation does not load at all. I suppose these two problems are related to each other, what causes them is unknown at the moment. I attach also a picture of the error screen as I try to update the head unit and the version screen:

So here my three messages:
1) does anyone have an idea how I could fix the navigation and/or the update process? I tried to find a downloadable file to force the update via USB with no luck.
2) regarding the green cable I guess the empty socket is exactly the same as the green socket and with an adapter also the connected services would work. Does anybody have some wiring diagrams which I could study to verify my assumption? The underlying thought is that on 2021-2022 models the two head unit coexisted depending on the version and I cannot imagine that the wiring can be so different, so I think the two head units should be easily swappable and thus an harness or adapter may exist.
3) Overall I expected a much more "premium" item. I am quite disappointed with the unit I got, the responsiveness is not as good as I have expected and the problems I experienced where a bit of a turn off.

@takis1964 I would be glad if you could give me some inputs about your experience: was everything functioning at the first time in your case? I also see from your pictures that the my T connected services seem to work in your case, is this so?

Thank you very much.

There is a unit that sits on top or under the main head unit but I have not re fitted it with this connected!

Good evening, the screen upgrade worked the next day. Do you connect the screen to wifi? I also connected it to the my t application and scanned a qr code. Then it login with the my t account and the screen is connected to the server. Then it does update

For the GPS, maybe the screen doesn't have it included? does it come from the simple model? I have installed carlinkit car box and I work on the map from there. Tuota's map is bad anyway

Hello,
can anyone help me on this...
I will like to change the screen on my GR from Yaris Cross but if I will buy the screen from eBay they have any security code, or is plug-in-play?

Thanks!

Looks like way too much work and research for most people. If someone comes up with a swap kit with clear benefits and instructions then maybe. Otherwise just enjoy driving the car and use the digital tech at home.

Hello Lee, thank you for your reply. I didn’t have this unit.
I have a normal Yaris, MY2020. I do have some connected services (unlock from phone, road assistance call through the car, …) so I suppose I have some kind of SIM card or similar installed somewhere, but it definitely wasn’t near the head unit. Furthermore I have GPS in my original head unit. I suppose these are the green, grey and white cables on the top row pf the head unit, with green being the LTE connection (which I didn’t have with the YP051 unit, and indeed I couldn’t connect to the myT services).

What bothers me the most is that the navigation tile was stuck on the loading “title” page (navigation with a map background). This suggested me the head unit is definitely abilitate to access navigation, but somehow maps or something were missing. Furthermore I really don’t interstate why the update would not work when con extend to a WiFi . This doesn’t make sense to me and I suppose these reason for this is a software problem with the unit, or the unit being somehow “locked”.

Hi @takis1964 , thank you for your reply. I still have some doubts/questions for you:
1) did you have some additional component attached to the head unit as shown in lee’s picture?
2) did you have the same green cable in the car which could not be connected and a white plug in the unit which remained empty (see my picture above)?
3) could you upload a picture of the settings screen where you see the software version and serial numbers? You obviously can gray out the specific numbers but I am interested to know if you have a DCM serial number.
4) did you experience bad audio quality? By maximum volume the quality is terrible compared to the original unit. Also maximum volume on the new unit is definitely lower than in the older.
5) do you have some pictures of the codes in the unit?

I don’t understand how you could connect to the myT services since if it was like my unit you could not connect to the LTE module.
Regarding navigation I know that the original Toyota maps are crap, but in principle I just wanted to make them work somehow.

they have different electronics and they don't have all the cables.
I have the Mazda 2 hybrid, the same as the Yaris, and the car had all the cables for the connection except for the dcm.

Hi folks, looking at doing this swap myself, been reading up on it.

The one open question seems to be the DCM, and therefor SOS / MyT functionality. Not a deal-breaker for me, but be nice to get everything working.

So the factory DCM (86740-0D031) won't connect to the new Smart Connect head unit is that correct? As the Smart Connect has the flat 5-pin connector which the old DCM doesn't? But all of the old DCM's cables do have sockets in the new Smart Connect, so has someone tried this?

Or what about leaving the Smart Connect's DCM (86740-YP010) connected? Anyone tried that? Does that work if you just enroll it into the MyT app as a new car?
