But the knock sensor won't be activated if it's not knocking, and it won't be knocking if you're just running up to 4k rpm, only if you're pushing it?

The knock sensors detect and relay info back to the ECU, it's then upto the ECU what it wants to do about it. Knock sensors measure crankcase harmonics to pick up detonation (literally a vibration sensor) they are an analogue device so it's not a case of on or off they are always measuring those vibration levels. You also have 2, one on each cylinder bank. It will measure the whole rev range, you can get bad knock down at low rpm under heavy loads, sometimes my GT86 used to pink on a hard pull when it wasn't quite upto temp.

I’ve found my cars run rough on the E10 and smell of fuel. Even the ones that are meant to be able to use it. I use E5 even in the ones that don’t technically need it.

My other car runs smoother on E10 than E5, but fewer MPG. Problem with the GR86 is the manual stating use super unleaded and that's only E5 as far as I know.

I'm due to brim the car today if I can shake off the man flu I have ;-) so I think I'll use the e10 this time as i'm running in at relatively low revs and see how I go

For a totally full tank it's about £7 more for the premium

So I filled up today and used e10.. Definitely feels flatter than it did.. So I’ll give her the good stuff next time

Bonnet dent now invisible and (after a few conversations) made the dealer realise that the locking wheel nut socket I had was not the one for the locking wheel nuts…

Running E5 Momentum 26.4 mpg (thinking about it I had an E46 M3 that wasn't much worse) 20 miles past zero on the range and lots of shortish local town journeys and managed 47.77 litres to fill.

First tank, mixed fuel of whatever dealer put in and rest filled with momentum 99, 24.7mpg, mainly urban runs with traffic.

I'll find out soon enough, but can anyone with experience of comparing winter to summer mpg on the GR give an estimate of the loss in colder months? In my turbo'd other car it's about 20% so just wondering if the GR will fare worse (probably depends on what portion of journeys are carried out where the engine doesn't have chance to get up to temp).

A lot of it depends on the driving conditions and style.

My mpg kept gradually increasing as I approached the first 1000 miles and an oil change, but as the weather improved and I completed the break-in procedure, my driving style adjusted accordingly, and with it the fuel consumption. I'd imagine it would be the same for most owners here.

Perhaps someone who commutes on the same route every day could give a more accurate answer to this.

Driving on E5 exclusively , A and B roads with mixture 30,40,50 and 60mph with some spirited driving thrown in, I get indicated 33mpg in summer and 30-31mpg in winter. This is over around 6000 miles traveled.

Yes, GR86 could run on E10 if it was available in Super Unleaded, but it's not in the UK, we've only got E5 Super.

Well it also states in the manual that if 98 octane (which would be E5) is not available, then it's OK to use 95 (which would be E10).
So you can use either if necessary.

My MPG is likely to fall after this evening as I crossed over 1,000 miles and switched the 4,000RPM warning off

SWMBO is going into hospital in Mcr for around 4 weeks on Friday so the mileage will be a fair bit higher by the New Year I expect

I treated the car to a tank of premium fuel this morning… But it’s nice to know that I can alternate if needed and it won’t impact on the warranty
